ARCHIVED Dagoba Cacao Powder?
ItchyAbby replied to BelleVie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just got some cocoa powder from Nuts dot com. It's certified by GFCO. Maybe try that to see if it's the chocolate of the possible cc? -
ARCHIVED Shared Kitchen "review And Renew"
ItchyAbby replied to GF Lover's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you for posting this! I do not have a shared kitchen, but I had to do a second kitchen review recently, after only a few months of being totally gluten-free. I was finding that there were things I was wary of (When/where did I purchase this item? Was it from the bulk bins? If I could not remember for absolute certain, out it went) The learning curve... -
ARCHIVED Best Way To Deal With Servers?

That's my city! Did you know that we had 4 totally gluten-free restaurants open up just this year? -

*licks screen furiously* &$*%&#(#@!!!! I cannot wait until I can eat dairy again. Mac n cheese was my all-time, #1, most awesomest, favoritest comfort food and I have not had it for months!. I'm going to go cry now. (j/k. but i am going to go stuff my face with coconut butter) -
ARCHIVED After Celiac Diagnoses - Were You Angry?
ItchyAbby replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was the Perfect Storm of emotion: Sad, Scared and Pissed, with the occasional ray of Hopeful thrown in there. I hated food for about two months - I only ate for sustenance, not for enjoyment and often wished that I did not have to eat at all. This is saying a lot because I am the very definition of a foodie - I love food, my whole family LOVES food, we... -
ARCHIVED Curious About Bulk Items
ItchyAbby replied to AmyNColorado's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No bulk bins for me. They are not to be trusted. Go to Nuts.com for all that stuff (their quality and selection is great). Just make sure you click on the "gluten free" heading. -
ARCHIVED Best Way To Deal With Servers?
ItchyAbby replied to annajazz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How do I deal with servers? I don't*. It's not worth the risk to me. If I get glutened, I will be covered in blistering hives for at least two weeks and be battling overwhelming anxiety that disrupts my ability to do anything. I'd rather cook for myself and know it's safe, than try to guess as to whether a server is really "getting it". Colleen's response... -

ARCHIVED Nuts Dot Com Is My New Favorite Website
ItchyAbby posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just got a big box from Nuts dot com (stop snickering!) and I feel like a kid on Christmas morning! Seriously, everything is so good. I opened all the packets and tried one of each. The figs, raisins and dates are all super soft and fresh (like they are in California). Also got chestnut flour, cacao nibs, freeze dried cranberries and kale granola, which... -
ARCHIVED Ridiculous Conversations
ItchyAbby replied to Auntie-Manda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well I found one source of this (mis)information: Open Original Shared Link This article says that European wheat and sourdough are safer for gluten intolerant people. This seems so irresponsible! -

I heard the sourdough thing yesterday! Some guy was saying that sourdough is not a problem for people with gluten issues. I was baffled. Do people actually believe this crap? -

Oh I will. I lurve me some waffles...but I am guessing that I might have to wait but until I can eat egg yolks and butter again. *le sigh* Indeed! The world is a horrible place when I am sleep deprived. You are right of course. I think my preference would probably lean toward Belgian-style, as well, but sometimes the thin crispier ones are good... -
ARCHIVED What's Your Favorite gluten-free Chocolate? (Soy Free, If Possible)
ItchyAbby replied to ItchyAbby's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thank you both! I've never heard of Amano - I'll check it out. Hershey's seems to be quite good with their gluten free knowledge and offerings, but on another site it says that they have a risk of cross-contamination on anything besides their milk chocolate bars (It could be wrong, of course...) Open Original Shared Link Ghiradelli also seems to have a... -
Maybe we need to have something in the Newbie thread(s) about this? (i.e. - do not trust the gluten free "options" in restaurants) The learning curve is SO steep in the beginning and the idea that you can still go out to eat like a "normal" person is all too alluring. I cried so much when I realized that I wouldn't be able to go to some of my favorite restaurants...

ARCHIVED What's Your Favorite gluten-free Chocolate? (Soy Free, If Possible)
ItchyAbby posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have been eyeing the Enjoy Life brand chips. I like that it does not have any soy (in the form of soy lecithin) because I am currently low-iodine and that eliminates soy. (Though I wonder if soy lecithin really a problem, but better safe than sorry, I guess) What other brands of good gluten-free chocolate are there? Bars, chips, baking, cocoa etc. ... -
True that. It was no hardship staying home, cozy by the fire with him. You are right, I know this. I do so well at this sometimes, but this week...eck. I am worn down a bit, I think. I am in the middle of a flare that has been non-stop for almost three weeks. Again, not as bad as it was back in the spring, but it is disruptive nonetheless. It's almost...

I have a patch right on my sacrum and I bargain with it often: "Please, please don't creep down my butt crack, ok?" It's crazy that your doc is uncomfortable with seeing the human body! Isn't that like, his job? I completely lost all modesty this year - i show the rash to everyone! (Ok maybe not the almost-buttcrack area...)
-
Yes! This is a well know painting titled "Death of Marat" I was an art major in college and when I came across this reference in my research I might have squealed a little. Very cool. I do take lots of baths when the rash is flared up. A screaming hot bath with Epsom salts followed by ice packs is my go-to bedtime ritual. When I have to be moving about...

Thanks, you guys. It helps to have you all here. I really am doing better than I was, but some days...I just don't got it, you know? I try so hard and work so hard to keep my head up and for the most part I am succeeding. But today, it just fell apart. And I get so scared. This thing scares me so much. I am so afraid of missing something, that I will suddenly...

It's pure misery. For three years, my rash was just a few spots (like in the first picture). Then it just exploded this year and is taking it's sweet time calming down.
-
I have been feeling bad in the afternoons - shaky, nauseous, really tired, irritable. I feel marginally better when I eat something, so maybe it's a blood sugar thingy. But it's hard to eat when I am queasy. And the #&$%ing rash - just ebbs and flows as it pleases, disrupting my sleep, my work, everything. I am paranoid lately, totally convinced...

Oh, dear, that is so frustrating. Like everyone else said, make sure you are on the cancellation list. You could also try what I do - I make a total pain in the ass out of myself - nicely, of course. When I was trying to get in to see an Immunodermatologist, I called everyday, sometimes several times a day. It got so that one of the ladies answering the phone...
