  1. I had a positive blood test (ttg IgA 128u/ml) in August in England - and then again in October when I moved back up to Scotland from England for uni (same result). I began a gluten-free diet after this because I knew it would take months to be seen and I just didn't want to force myself to eat it. This afternoon I finally saw a gastroenterologist, three...
  2. Agh, that's annoying. It's totally intolerant of me but I just want to blast people who are misinformed about gluten, because they make our lives tougher. I have the opposite with my boyfriend's parents - I am veggie and before I was DX'd my boyfriend used to get mad at them for insisting on serving meat and veggie food (a particularly memorable incident...
  3. Good luck with the doctor tomorrow. I'm also in the UK and it took three visits before anyone thought to test me and I wish I could track down and hug the locum who thought to test for it! I was just talking to my GP today and she said that there's been a real improvement recently in the diagnosis and management of Coeliac in the UK so I hope you find that...
  4. I'm still the little (literally) baby in the family that everyone is trying to feed up, even more so now. Someone needs to have some babies and get me off the hook... Yoga sounds really good! Hopefully it might help a little on the emotional side of things too. Well done for making the decision to cut back - that takes a lot of strength, too :)
  5. Thank you everyone advice duly noted Got myself onto some good probiotics and decided to put worrying about 'other intolerances' out of my mind for a while - except for eggs. I have noticed that if I eat eggs alone (boiled, omelette etc) I get not D exactly, but a tender tummy, bloating and gas. Products containing eggs seem to be OK though. Anyone else...
  6. I so feel for you :( I'm lucky enough to be able to carry on with my aerial and pole but my stomach can't handle being jiggled around on long runs yet, and my GP pretty much ordered me to cut back on the running/cardio for the first few months of iron supplements while they tried to fix the anaemia. I'm so pissed because I used to hate running and worked...
  7. Ahh I see, I guess it depends then what is accepted in America and the UK. I'll let you know how I get on I did read somewhere that new guidelines are being introduced for diagnosing children, especially if the blood count is over 100u/ml (I'm talking about ttg IgA antibodies there, I don't know anything about the others) but I can't remember where I saw...
  8. Yeah, I think the test itself takes slightly longer than say, blood iron, because I had both on the same day and the iron came back much faster. Your GP should be able to tell you I'm from England but I'm studying in Scotland at the moment and I know that in both places the assumption is your GP tests you, then sends you to a gastroenterologist who sorts...
  9. Hey there, It takes a few weeks for the results to come back - three or maybe four when I had mine back. Sort out with your GP whether you need to call them for the results or they'll call you. I'd suggest getting a printed copy of all your blood tests as otherwise they'll probably just tell you yes or no.
  10. I'm very new to all this but two things stood out to me - the non-infection genital itching and the irregular periods. Look up lichen sclerosis - here and online - for the itching and see if it sounds like you. My periods had a very long cycle and were light and short but incredibly painful before I got diagnosed, started taking iron supplements and went...

    ARCHIVED Life Is Good

I get 'bone ache' in my forearms if they get cold after a session (I do aerial acrobatics - see pic!) but I have no idea if it's related to bone density. Aerial is incredibly tough on the forearms in particular but I've never had twitching any longer than immediately after the session from it. My trainer explained mid-session twitching as muscle recruiting...
  12. Hmm thank you guys, lots of food for thought here. Sounds like it shouldn't trigger antibodies but mightn't be a bad idea to lay off it. NoGlutenCooties, I read your theory somewhere else here about being more of a lightweight since going gluten-free - I agree! Must be an absorption thing. But whereas a few glasses of wine would make me feel sick, now I'm...
  13. Thank you if it's on the safe list presumably it isn't triggering a reaction? So that's that taken care of. Maybe it's just a sensitive, healing tummy thing.
  14. I've Googled this to death and apparently Scottish single malt whisky, with no mash added back in, should be safe for coeliacs. However, it definitely gives me stomach cramps, bloating and gas. Only for a few hours though so although I don't think it's a 'glutening' it's definitely a ... something. I've only been gluten free for two months so I know I'm probably...
  15. Just today - I was texting my mum about ordering gluten free ingredients for me to make my Christmas food with (I'm a student and heading home for Christmas in a couple of weeks). I mentioned what I was planning to buy and what I'd make myself. A tradition of ours is soaking fruit and spices in booze, then drinking the spirit and using the soaked fruit and...
  16. Do not apologise for talking about your exercise! (lifting isn't it?) I like it - certain people around me seem to think that exercise 'caused' Coeliac *bangs head against wall* and then I feel that I'm being irresponsible by continuing with it. So it's great to hear someone else focusing on it to get through the changes. Out of interest, what is RMR?
  17. *scoffs multiple gingerbread men* Colleen, thank you for the mindfulness info. I had heard of it before but couldn't remember the details. And you're very right about exercise too - I've always been active but got my diagnosis in the same month that I completed my first marathon and then, partly because I felt miserable and partly because I was so fed...
  18. I can't really offer any advice as I'm still learning to deal with it all but I know what you mean about the ups and downs. And I can't even work out why they happen. What was the mindfulness technique? The novelty is wearing off and the 'rest of your life' is weighing on my mind a bit. I don't miss actual gluten products at all, but at the moment I hate...
  19. When I lived in Kenya my mama used to feed us millet porridge if we were ill = ultimate comfort food! Make it with water (make a paste first, then gradually add hot water until it's the consistency you want) and eat with sugar or lemon or butter I also used the flakes to make porridge when I was first diagnosed but thought they had a weird, bitter flavour...
  20. Serving yourself first has just ticked my final Christmas Dinner worry list. Me and my Mum are cooking it (and she is good about CC) but it's the feeding frenzy at the table and possible double dipping/gluten dropping onto non-gluten food that worried me. Sorted - plate up in the kitchen! Simple idea but it's made me happy.
  21. I haven't tried this but I plan to soon! Doughnuts (Pops) Ingredients: - 8oz plain gluten free flour (we used Doves gluten-free Plain Flour) - 1 1/2oz castor sugar - 2 tsp Fast acting yeast (we used the ones that coming Juvela flour boxes) - 1 egg, beaten - 1oz butter - 1/2 tsp salt - 3 tbsps milk - 3 tbsps boiling water - Oil for frying Method: 1...
  22. Hard to say. As I said I wasn't particularly symptomatic before diagnosis - I'd had mild bloating/cramps/gas for a few years and then this summer just runner's tummy that took longer to go away. I also had the mucousy BMs which I take to be a sign of malabsorption (as well as severe anaemia and sensitive teeth). So - the BMs are normal now so I guess I...
  23. I've been gluten free for six weeks now after diagnosis. I didn't think that I had any other intolerances but I'm beginning to wonder. So it may sound like a stupid question (who am I kidding, it is!) but how do you spot the difference between another intolerance and a possible glutening (shared house...) or something that's just part of the withdrawal/healing...
  24. Maybe find a substitute snack/treat? When it comes down to a battle of wills, my mum suggested I tell myself 'I don't want to eat that' instead of 'I can't/shouldn't eat that'. It helped her lose weight and although I haven't really struggled with willpower for gluten food I find it helps me curb my chocolate intake Also, the way I understand it (I'm a...
  25. More updates... Ironically I seem to be eating out more than usual since I've been diagnosed :/ This was not the plan!! I had an impromptu lunch at the Hillhead Bookclub on Byres Road on Thursday. Usually I wouldn't go somewhere without checking first but ... Anyway, I asked the waitress if the soup was gluten free (it was, and I watched her asking the...
