  1. Yep - all the time. However, I have noticed recently that I focus more on those who are a bit rubbish about it than the friends who are supportive (probably because the rubbish ones are louder about it!). If it's someone I see regularly I try to make them understand and I know my parents needed a few weeks to get their heads around it but the more they see...
  2. I think a photo could save yourself and the Dr the embarrassment of describing it verbally! If it gets over the camera-shyness It sounds a little like the mucus I noticed before diagnosis which I think signifies fat malabsorption? Doesn't make much sense if you've been gluten-free since July?
  3. Impromptu camping trip on Sunday night (yay) at the end of an already busy weekend = spending Friday night thinking about Monday morning's breakfast

  4. Thanks guys. I eat out (with as much care as possible, that's the decision I feel is right for me) and drink in moderation and have done since diagnosis without problem, which is why this reaction after a fairly routine event surprised me. NatureChick that's interesting about you and your sister having such different reactions (except for neck pain). I...
  5. No problem, I'm sure you'll get used to it. That only lasted a week or so for me - the difference now is that I actually feel hunger, whereas before I just used to feel my blood sugar crashing when it was too late, so to speak. And I can finish much larger meals now than before (pig). I took prescription supplements for about six months and a blood test...
  6. I was eating four big meals a day when I was first diagnosed! So hungry. Try to enjoy it/take advantage, it might not last that long
  7. I've been gluten free for seven months. I didn't have severe or particularly noticeable symptoms before diagnosis so I wasn't sure how I'd know if I got glutened. On Saturday I went for a meal with friends and three hours later (lasting for four hours) I was literally unable to get out of bed with the pain and nausea from an incredibly stiff and sore neck...
  8. Ohhh poor you I know the feeling - the stress of meeting new (and important) people added to by food! Not cool. Karen's right - eat first and just have a drink at the restaurant. Whether you eat or not, people will notice that you are approaching food differently to them so you may as well *not* approach it and then at least you don't have to worry about...
  9. Hmmm, tricky. My ex (I wasn't diagnosed, he'd been diagnosed as a kid) has coeliac and his kitchen was shared but absolutely everything was separate, textbook. I'd definitely eat there. But the guy drinks regular beer and thinks that's OK... I'd always ask (if it's a coeliac potluck organised by a group, maybe they could have some guidelines that everyone...
  10. Testing can be such a pain... I started to notice symptoms last summer, between my penultimate and final year of university and was diagnosed by two blood tests (one with my home GP and one with uni GP) in September. It would be a three month wait to see a gastro and then another month for a biopsy and scope. Because it was messing up my ability to work during...
  11. I had three doctor's appointments where after prodding my stomach and ascertaining that I wasn't pooping blood, she sent me away because there 'wasn't anything seriously wrong with me' - so when the doctor who diagnosed me prodded my stomach and then ordered further tests I freaked out... (Sweetened the coeliac pill though!)
  12. Oh yeah and when emailing/speaking to the waiter I say something like - 'I have coeliac disease which means I can't have any gluten at all. Gluten is found in wheat, barley and rye - it's a bit like an allergy.' I hate saying allergy as it's not the right word at all but as kenlove says it gets their attention! I did once, in a restaurant I trust and which...
  13. I don't really get gastro symptoms either so I know what you mean about CC and taking everything seriously (however, the only time I glutened myself - accidentally drank glutenful beer - my major feeling was depression and anxiety, which I hadn't had before. Weird!). In restaurants I stress the need for fresh oil and condiments, a separate grill and of...
  14. Yeah as a rule I call or email ahead (usually email as it gives them time to check with the chef) asking what they can provide for me and what they know about preventing cross contamination. This is easier with independent places - I only go to chains which have gluten free menus because chains which don't bother with gluten free menus are unlikely to bother...

    Wonderful Friends

Yeah! I'm still smiling about it a few days later. I'm not sure... There are two restaurants I eat at where I feel completely safe so next time I eat there with someone I feel comfortable explaining my requirements in front of (like my parents or boyfriend) I'll take note of how I feel. Hard one to test really! I wish there was some instant test that could...
  16. I'm having chana masala tonight Open Original Shared Link (Or like me you can cheat and find a pre-made spice pack...) That website is brilliant. Obviously it isn't intended to be gluten-free but it mostly is and substitutions are easy. The ingredients list may be long but I just tick as many boxes as I can, still tastes good!

    Wonderful Friends

The last few weeks have been a bit fraught over here with uni finals and The Job Hunt beginning, to the point where I ducked out of a dinner and night out with old school friends on Saturday because I didn't want to join in with the chat about uni and jobhunting, or to once again grill waiters in front of my friends. My friends are fine about it, I just hate...
  18. I'm trying these tonight (minus the ham!) Open Original Shared Link Usually I cook it up then pour it into little tubs to solidify in the fridge. I then cut it into sticks or slices to do what I want with. One of my favourites is sticks of polenta covering the bottom of a baking dish, scatter chopped blue cheese over it, then tomato sauce, then eggs. Bake...
  19. Yeah I get you It still surprises me how emotive food can be - particularly when you're denied it (whatever gluteny thing that may be) and when you have to be on your guard or defensive if you trust someone else (a friend or a chef) to arrange your food. Like moosemalibu said it is a grieving process because you suddenly have to say goodbye to something...
  20. Do you mean it starts during the hike/ride once you've eaten? If so I sympathise, I'm a distance runner and I can't eat anything solid while I run. I can't have more than one gel during a session either (think it's those chemicals) without 'protest', shall we say, so that isn't a particularly good solution for me either. What do you eat the day before and...
  21. Brilliant! Going out for dinner tonight (party includes one friend who well-meaningly made me vegan brownies after I was diagnosed...) and I've just got off the phone from my pre-meal grilling the restaurant about their gluten-free menu. Which, just tonight, does not include gluten free buns as they've run out. This has cheered me up as I chomp grumpily through...
  22. Hey Leanne, I'm in the UK too and if you've been seeing GPs with unexplained vaginal bleeding and they aren't investigating that then they need a !. You shouldn't have to pay for something the NHS should be doing (I know that's easier said than done when they are point blank refusing to take you seriously!).
  23. That sounds familiar! Well done for having the patience to get a biopsy, I didn't even have the patience with the NHS to do that... My diagnosis is based on two very positive blood tests followed by a much lower one after three months gluten-free. That and my improved health is all the proof my GP and I need. One thing that you can check with your GP...
  24. I haven't linked ingesting gluten (though touch wood I haven't majorly glutened myself...yet) with vaginal bleeding, but I realised after diagnosis and a few months completely gluten-free just how erratic and weird my cycles had become - irregular, varying heaviness and really painful! Since going gluten-free and taking supplements for the anaemia I also...
  25. In the three months after going gluten-free I reacted to whisky in a way I hadn't before - horrible horrible cramps, bloating and gas. Six months down the line and all is good again If you are new to the diet it is fiddly working out what you can tolerate/re-introduce but preferable to cutting it all out. Apologies if you're further into it than that and...
