  1. Hey Laura, I'm a student too and recently diagnosed. Student budgets and gluten-free are not friends are they!? Have you looked at getting food on prescription? Or signing up to Glutafin and Juvela (the providers of the prescription food). They should send you a huge free hamper in order to tempt you to get their stuff on prescription. I think I've had...
  2. Hey, I got a positive blood test in September (almost by surprise) but got so freaked out by the idea of what gluten was doing to my insides that I cut it out immediately and will not be going on a challenge for the biopsy or anything. Have you been tested for other deficiences? In my head I'm almost 'bulking out' my blood test results with the fact...
  3. Oh and - this week I was explaining how gluten-free prescriptions work in the UK. Time for 'Wow, I want free food! (yeah, free apart from the prescription charge) What other minor illness could I have so that I could get some?'
  4. Argh! I've just had this this evening (so I'm on here instead of throttling my flatmate) She offered me some soup she'd made. I said, 'Oh, is it gluten free?' (Stupid question, should just have said no! I wouldn't share pans anyway) cue 'Well I don't know. I don't know what has gluten in it' Fair enough, but then: 'A spoonful wouldn't kill you, anyway...
  5. Jeez, thanks for the heads up on malt in cider. Whyyyyy?! I asked my brother, who works in a bar, and he said obviously it would vary by bar but changing the lines between beer/cider taps would be complicated and he doesn't see why it would happen. No answer on the communal wipe down cloth but having seen the state of his bathroom I'm not hopeful (eww)...
  6. Haha! Yes this forum has been a great diversion and much more helpful than he'd ever be. The fact that we have celiac disease in common now (of all things) is giving all our mutual friends a laugh too
  7. Hey, My first Christmas coming up after diagnosis too and I'm also feeling mixed about it. I can't wait to get home and see my family, but we are a big foodie fam too, of which I'm the only vegetarian and the only coeliac, and Christmas gets stressful enough on the food front without another thing to watch out for. Luckily we're cooking at my Mum's...
  8. I've been wondering this too. All I can think of is cleaning the lines (if they're shared?) and if they use the same cloth to wipe down all the taps? Must vary by bar I suppose.
  9. Hey SarahMay, I just got diagnosed last month so the overwhelmed feeling is still fresh in my mind! There's so much to learn... Now I've got my head around it more I'm trying to see the inconvenience of adapting as just the price of feeling better and healing. I'm also spending a ridiculous amount of time on blogs by Coeliacs and of course this forum...
  10. Hard as it might be, it's probably worth giving it your best shot to get your sister and boyfriend's mum to understand now. Although my flatmates have been fine with some of the changes I made, I didn't really spell it out to them when I was diagnosed a few months ago because I didn't want to cause too much fuss. Now I can see that there are things they need...
  11. Hi all, Just wondering what the deal is with barista coffee made on those big machines whose name I can't remember...a la Starbucks, Costa etc. I remembered to check that the flavoured syrups are gluten-free (Monin is) but is there likely to be gluten on the machine? The only thing I can think of is possible CC from making hot chocolate or something? Thanks...
  12. Aha thankyou, I know. As I remember he is pretty useless at sticking to the diet (usually avoids it but drinks beer, doesn't check restaurants properly) so wouldn't be much good anyway! But you know when you get really used to stopping yourself from finding any excuse to talk to someone...?!
  13. When I was 17 I had my first boyfriend and subsequent gutting break up etc etc. He was a Coeliac, so I learned a lot about the lifestyle while we were together. And harboured a resentment towards gluten-free food for a few years afterwards! Fast forward five years and to my complete surprise (when the doctor suggested testing me for it I laughed at him...
  14. An update! Last night my Dad and I went for dinner at the Oran Mor on Byres Road. I was really impressed with both the food and the amount of effort the waitress went to to make absolutely sure of everything for me. As well as telling the chefs that I was Coeliac and checking that the dish I'd ordered (Thai vegetable curry) was gluten free she checked for...
  15. My friends know I don't buy biscuits any more because the gluten-free ones are so expensive (we are students!) but they always buy a box when I go over My Mum sent my Dad to the wholefood co-op for one thing for me (there's a great one near them and none near me) - he came back with so much stuff for me! He's also spent ages making up curry powders from...
  16. Aha good to hear! I love it here. Sadly the national dish of deep friend Mars Bars is off limits now.
  17. Eggs? Eggs?! I meant 'regs'. Thank you auto correct.
  18. At first I took a combined iron + vit C from a large high street chemist (you guessed correctly, I'm a Brit ) They're once daily contain 60mg Vit C and 1mg Iron. The prescription ones are twice daily, Ferrous Fumarate 210g, 69g of 'elemental iron'. So it probably has a lot to do with quantities but I wouldn't have realised the difference (and what a difference...
  19. Just wanted to share an app I've found to be useful for keeping a food journal and symptom diary (if anyone else, like me, never remembers to write things down on paper!) 'symple' is free and so far hasn't hassled me with any 'upgrade' options. You fill in a journal, symptoms and other factors (eg. exercise, medicine) for each day. Symptoms and factors...

    ARCHIVED Life Is Good

Similar things here - I felt lethargic but able to continue with strength stuff (as well as lifting and conditioning I do aerial acrobatics) but I still feel weaker doing cardio than I did previously. I think partly mine is psychological - my symptoms only became really noticeable when I trained for a marathon. I'm now a month into three months 'resting'...
  21. Glad to hear a lot of your symptoms are better after going gluten-free! After getting diagnosed with coeliac and going gluten-free I still felt really really tired and unable to concentrate (daydreams - me too) until the doctor had another look at my records and realised she should have prescribed me iron supplements for anaemia. D'uh. Even though your...
  22. My uncle (to my mum when she told him about my diagnosis: 'I always said vegetarianism was bad for her! She just wants to get some meat down her' A friend (who seems to have a coeliac friend who doesn't really stick to the diet) 'I guess it's just a case of finding out how much you can tolerate sometimes' On the other hand, most of my friends at uni...
  23. (Also, fellow Glaswegians, please do add your experiences!)
  24. To save money when replacing my stuff I collected empty glass jars (but binned the lids and used cling film to cover them) instead of tupperware. A matching set of brightly coloured stuff would be prettier though and more obviously gluten-free if you have kids too I guess.
