  1. I too had no noticeable symptoms - other than having osteopenia at 40. Celiac runs in my family so when I heard there was a blood test for it I asked my doctor to throw it in with my annual blood test panel - feeling confident it would come back negative because I didn't have any symptoms. Sure enough - I have it. They followed up with an endoscopy with...
  2. If anyone ever bakes in your kitchen with regular flour it is a good idea to rinse off the silverware before you use it. Crumbs and flour dust can settle into the silverware drawer.
  3. Just in case you not aware, having the gene(s) does not mean you have or will ever get Celiac. Approx. 30% or more of the population has the gene(s) but only a few actually develop Celiac (I think it's 1%).
  4. Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance is still a possibility. You could try going 100% gluten-free and then after a couple of months try eating it again to see if you react negatively to it (try a small amount to keep the reaction minimal). If you get symptoms again, then there's your answer.
  5. Keep in mind that for many, after going gluten-free their reactions to even small amounts of gluten (i.e. cross contamination) can get more severe over time - they can also change over time. So it is possible that cross-contamination may not have bothered you much in the past but will bother you more the longer you are gluten-free. (Possible... but not...
  6. Personally, I would be very concerned about the blood in the stool. Yes, this is a possibility with Celiac but it can have other, much more serious causes as well. If there is any way you can get checked out by a doctor I think it would be a good idea. But yes, if it is Celiac and you go 100% gluten-free, your villi will heal. From what I've read, the...
  7. How long have you been gluten-free? If you aren't getting nasty symptoms when you eat gluten, it may be worth doing a gluten challenge so that you can get re-tested. If you've been getting cross-contaminated regularly then you aren't 100% gluten-free (although probably too gluten-free for the tests to be useful) and if you aren't 100% gluten-free that may...
  8. Just wanted to add one thing... and this is just my own opinion/viewpoint - I don't have any "medical evidence" of this... but my suspicion is that a major reason for Celiac people to still have a lower-than-normal life expectancy is because they actually eat worse after their diagnosis than they did before they were diagnosed. "Gluten-free" does not automatically...
  9. I agree with the previous posters - it is definitely worth getting your daughter tested. If your SIL is a blood-relative I think it would be worth getting your son tested as well, even though he isn't exhibiting symptoms. If either your SIL or your daughter test postive for Celiac, your son should get tested every couple of years because Celiac can show...
  10. Just wanted to add that if your daughter is developing additional food sensitivities/intolerances you may want to try a rotation diet. I've never tried it myself - maybe someone more familiar with it will chime in here - but from what I understand of it you rotate through food in the same family every 4 days. So for example, if you have potatoes on Monday...
  11. By any chance, are you taking iron? If I take iron without taking it with enough food it will do this to me... my salivary glands go nuts and I get naseous and dizzy. In the past it has made me vomit. If I take it with a good amount of food, it's fine.
  12. I don't think that's what that statement says at all... I read it as an acknowlegement that people with thyroid issues are likely to also have adrenal issues and vice versa. The links between adrenal fatigue (or whatever term you want to use... overtaxed adrenals, tired adrenal glands...) are well known: Links between adrenal fatigue and thyroid conditions...
  13. Hi and Welcome to the Forum! I agree with cyclinglady - it could be anything. Your symptoms are consistent with Celiac, but they could have other causes as well. Were your blood tests for Celiac? You should request a copy of your lab results so that you know which tests they ran and what the actual numbers were. In my opinion, the endoscopy is a good...
  14. Well said... couldn't agree more!
  15. FWIW... my ex-brother-in-law was an alcoholic and a smoker. He found it easier to stop drinking than to quit smoking.
  16. I'm not one for solid food in the morning - I drink a protein shake every morning (Whey Protein). But my mother (also a Celiac) loves buckwheat cereal. (don't let the name fool you... buckwheat is in no way related to wheat... it's actually not even a grain, but a fruit)
  17. Me too! There are a lot of bad habits that I don't understand - some of which I am guilty of myself from time-to-time - but people ask how can someone smoke when they know it is bad for them? People do all kinds of things that are bad for them... they eat junk food, way too much sugar, chemicals, caffeine, alcohol.... refuse to get enough sleep... refuse...
  18. I never said that if a person is tired they should jump to the conclusion that it has something to do with the adrenals - or assume that it is related to Celiac, for that matter. But there are symptoms that point to the adrenals being overworked, overtaxed, tired, stressed, not functioning at optimal levels - whatever you want to call it. In my case, going...
  19. I think "tired" can mean a lot of things.. and in this case it generally means there is something causing the adrenals to act sluggishly and the doctors cannot figure out what it is. It is not all that unlike having low blood sugar and doing nothing about it... eventually the pancreas wears itself out and can no longer make enough insulin and you swing from...
  20. Just my .02 - FWIW... I don't really see "adrenal fatigue" as a diagnosis. I see it as having tired adrenals. Maybe not worn out to the point where the doctors could pinpoint that something is wrong... but there are signs that things are headed that way. I do agree that getting tested for more serious ailments and consulting with a doctor is important...
  21. Welcome back! Sorry to hear about the rough month... several people in my office have come down with either a really nasty cold, or flu-like symptoms. One of my employees just found out he has pneumonia. I would have thought that it got cold enough this year to kill off most of the microscopic critters... (it was 9 degrees F when I left the house this...
  22. I take digestive enzymes with every meal and with any hard-to-digest snack (i.e. nuts, cheese). They make a big difference for me. Without them food will sometimes sit in my stomach for awhile and make me feel heavy, overly full, and generally sluggish. I take them with the first bite of food. I also take them when I take all of my other supplements in...
  23. I'm one of the few weird people in the world who don't like Girl Scout cookies - any of them - never did. But I was going to try the Gluten Free ones if I saw them... now I know not to bother. Thanks! (Someone asked about their process and being aware of cross-contamination... the advertisement I saw had the "Certified Gluten Free" logo on it... which...
  24. I've never been diagnosed with adrenal fatigue, but I was starting to get symptoms of thyroid issues that were likely related to the pre-menopause hormonal roller-coaster that was going on inside my body. Menopause can wreak havoc on the thyroid and also wear out the adrenal glands so I started taking an adrenal support supplement along with a thyroid support...
  25. It may be connected with the effects smoking has on the body's ability to use/absorb calcium... smoking is also linked to osteoporosis.
