ARCHIVED Newly gluten-free And Really Thirsty?
NoGlutenCooties replied to mamafish's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I regularly drink 8 to 10 big glasses of water daily - have for years - so am well hydrated and did not experience any changes in my thirst when I went gluten-free. That said, your body may be starting to clean out and wanting some additional water to help it along. Also, when your body is sluggish - the way it gets when it's getting gluttened - you can... -
ARCHIVED I Have Some Newbie Questions About Celiac Disease
NoGlutenCooties replied to ship69's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm no expert on diabetes, but there are significant differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and varying degrees of the disease. My mother was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes when she was in her early-to-mid 60s. She was not bad enough to need insulin yet. She really went after it with diet - testing her blood sugar religiously to figure out exactly... -
ARCHIVED Help With Lab Results
NoGlutenCooties replied to mta-464683's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My lab results clearly say 0-11 is negative. I think there are just many differing opinions about how high is too high. But the nutritionalists I've spoken to, and in the books my mom has read, they believe anything over 3 is cause for concern. I have an innate distrust of the entire medical profession, but I really think it has more to do with the insurance... -
ARCHIVED Broccoli & Cauliflower Causing Problems?
NoGlutenCooties replied to josh052980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Beano says on the label that it may contain wheat. I switched to Bean Zyme, which is the same ingredients but is certified gluten-free. Cheaper too. -
ARCHIVED Broccoli & Cauliflower Causing Problems?
NoGlutenCooties replied to josh052980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I eat broccoli and califlower pretty much daily - raw in salads and cooked in stir-fry - but I always take a Bean-Zyme (gluten-free version of Beano) before hand. If I forget, they will give me a fair amount of gas. But I didn't notice any difference between pre- and post- gluten-free consumption. You could be reacting to the wine. I have found that since... -
ARCHIVED After Celiac Diagnoses - Were You Angry?
NoGlutenCooties replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've also been gluten-free for 6 weeks, diagnosed early October. I think it's perfectly natural to have strong emotions when you first find out that there is something going on with your body that you have no control over and that will significantly alter your lifestyle. What emotion you experience varies person-to-person. That said... I went through... -
ARCHIVED Best Way To Deal With Servers?
NoGlutenCooties replied to annajazz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am relatively new at this too, having been gluten-free for only 6 weeks and I've been intimidated by the idea of eating out. But I have done it a few times now, starting with breakfast. I wait to order last so that I have the waitress' full attention and less chance that they will forget about my request while they're taking additional orders. I start... -
ARCHIVED New To gluten-free And Anxious About Going Out
NoGlutenCooties replied to MChase's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is a great suggestion! My uncle has Celiac and has very severe reactions and when we had a large family gathering at a restaurant he brought his own dinner and the restaurant was very good about heating it up for him so that he could eat with everyone else. Most places make an effort to be accommodating.- 11 replies

ARCHIVED Probiotic Back Pain?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Newtoitall's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been taking probiotics for years and double up on them anytime I've had to take antibiotics and have never had any issues. I've never heard any of the nutritionalists link probiotics with any kind of pain - as long as you don't take so many of them that they give you diarhea. If you're taking them to balance yeast, keep in mind that when yeast die... -
ARCHIVED It's Finally Done!
NoGlutenCooties replied to SkyBlue4's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Congratulations! My system was a bit touchy for the first few days after my endo - don't forget you have to heal from where they took the biopsies. -
ARCHIVED Endoscopy Results
NoGlutenCooties replied to buckeye23's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with the others that this could be indicative of another food sensitivity/allergy but wanted to add that I had tongue swelling long before going gluten-free and did some research with nutritionalists and it is a common symptom of sluggish thyroid. I started taking a Thyroid Support supplement (I get the one from Gaia Herbs - who recently confirmed... -
ARCHIVED Question About Symptoms
NoGlutenCooties replied to platzen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You probably already know this, but just to make sure, going gluten-free is about a lot more than just wheat. It's wheat, rye, and barley - and for many Celiacs, it's also staying away from oats. And this includes anything derived from any of these grains, like barley malt, many flavorings, and a bunch of other ingredients that are hiding in processed food... -
ARCHIVED Help With Lab Results
NoGlutenCooties replied to mta-464683's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There may be a difference between labs, but from my experience a 25 on this test is not a weak positive - it is a most definitely positive, be glad you're getting the endoscopy. My doctor considers anything over 10 to be a definate positive. Most nutritionalists that I've talked to consider anything over 3 to be a definite positive. When I had my tests... -
ARCHIVED Is This Celiac?
NoGlutenCooties replied to AaronM761138's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If they've already taken blood for the bloodtest you don't have to wait for the endoscopy to go gluten-free - depending on how long it will take for you to get the endoscopy appointment. In my case, I only had to wait 3 weeks from the positive bloodtest result to get the endoscopy. I went gluten-free the minute I got the bloodtest result and the endoscopy... -
ARCHIVED I Have Some Newbie Questions About Celiac Disease
NoGlutenCooties replied to ship69's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's true that allergies and autoimmune responses both involve the immune system. However, an allergy is a different type of response. Open Original Shared Link With Celiac, the antibodies that your body produces in its efforts to try to "kill" the gluten damages the villi in the small intestine, causing them to no longer be able to absorb nutrients from... -
ARCHIVED New To gluten-free And Anxious About Going Out
NoGlutenCooties replied to MChase's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you can find Luna protein bars, they're great: Open Original Shared Link They don't have a weird after taste and they don't taste like sawdust the way many protein bars can. I was eating these before I even knew I had Celiac. And they travel well.- 11 replies

ARCHIVED Ridiculous Conversations
NoGlutenCooties replied to Auntie-Manda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Agreed! Especially when they have just as many Celiacs in Europe as we do here in the US: https://www.celiac.com/articles/22487/1/Screening-Study-Shows-Higher-Prevalence-for-Celiac-Disease/Page1.html "Ceiac.com 03/28/2011 - While rates of diagnosed celiac disease are less than 1 in 2,000 in the United States, screening studies in European and other... -
ARCHIVED Dealing With Getting Glutened?
NoGlutenCooties replied to upsilamba's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know how to link to an earlier post thread on here, so I'm just copying/pasting - this was posted as a response received back from Austin Nichols - the makers of Wild Turkey Bourbon: Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding glutens in beverage alcohol products specifically Wild Turkey Bourbon. We have received an approved answer... -
ARCHIVED Ridiculous Conversations
NoGlutenCooties replied to Auntie-Manda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I actually had a friend tell me Italian bread was ok. And that bread from Italy and France is more "pure" so wouldn't bother me. -
ARCHIVED Greater "sensitivity" To Alcohol?
NoGlutenCooties replied to NoGlutenCooties's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks everone! Always good to know I'm not the only one! Pegleg84: regarding sulfites and wine-headaches... I've found pinot noir to not hit me like that (well... in my pre-gluten-free days anyhow... haven't had it recently) - and it also seems to really help to let the wine breathe for a bit before drinking it. -
ARCHIVED Migraines And Going Gluten Free
NoGlutenCooties replied to helennaomi's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just wanted to mention that I've only had a few migraines in my life and used to get them once in awhile when I was highschool. Then a few weeks after going gluten-free I started to get headaches in the morning that felt as if they wanted to turn into migraines, although they didn't. I finally figured out that I was having a reaction to my multi-vitamin... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Left Out.
NoGlutenCooties replied to bburmeister0407's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ditto - and very well said!! I have friends who insist I need to check out the gluten-free isle at Wegman's. I didn't eat boxed, over-processed crap before I knew I had Celiac. Why the heck would I start eating it now just because it's stamped "gluten-free"?? One of my friends is convinced that if it doesn't say "gluten-free" on it, then it can't possibly... -
ARCHIVED Dealing With Getting Glutened?
NoGlutenCooties replied to upsilamba's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Adding back in sugar cane/molasses will not add gluten. Captain Morgan is actually gluten-free - even their spiced rums. I know for me, any rum is a guaranteed headache. But it has to do with the sugar, not gluten. You may just be sensitive to alcohol, which I'm finding out is not all that uncommon for Celiacs. -
ARCHIVED Greater "sensitivity" To Alcohol?
NoGlutenCooties replied to NoGlutenCooties's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nope - Wild Turkey Bourbon. The distillation process takes out any gluten. And this wasn't a sick feeling, just a buzzed feeling - like I would normally get after the 4th or 5th drink... not after just two. -
ARCHIVED Testing Question After Gf
NoGlutenCooties replied to barbiannc's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just wanted to add that another option for you would be to get the gene testing. If you're negative for the Celiac gene, then you cannot have Celiac - you most likely have gluten sensitivity. No need to do the gluten challenge. That said, I agree with the others that 1) your doctor is an idiot and/or ignorant and 2) you'd have to do a gluten challenge...
