  1. I'm going to guess that I'm the one who hurt your feelings on the "cook from scratch and get over it" front, because what you describe sounds like my sort of response. I apologize for hurting your feelings, but it brings me to the advice to newbies to realize that the written word is woefully inadequate for getting across the full meaning of something. ...
  2. You can't really go off "what works for you" because you need an antibiotic specific to the infection you have. Keep track of what works for you - it varies by person - and let your doctor know that you're generally very sensitive. Do what you can to minimize effects - eating with them (if allowable) or drinking milk (or a milk sub) (if allowable), and...
  3. I'm generally not one to believe in conspiracy theories, so I don't think there's a wheat lobby behind this - the wheat lobby is more interested in spending their money getting subsidies out of Congress than affecting the fairly small bottom line involved in this study. I do think, however, that this study is founded in utter ignorance of Celiac Disease...
  4. Then, as milk, yogurt, and ice cream all contain casein (the primary) milk protein), whey (another milk protein), and lactose (the primary milk sugar), it is unlikely that it is dairy that's the problem. Perhaps you are sensitive to rennent? Do you always have the same type of cheese or cheese from the same family?
  5. I know there are at least three blogs out there (one from a woman in Seattle!) about being gluten-free. They don't get a whole lot of publicity, but they're out there. If I find the links, I'll post them. One of our members has a blogger blog as well, I believe.
  6. Sounds like it could be a milk allergy. Do you notice any reactions to any other dairy products? (Milk, yogurt, ice cream?)
  7. I forgot to add - on the pole front - they're a bit more expensive, but the collapsing poles (particularly three segment, twist lock variety) are very convenient if you have a pack that has any sort of location you can strap them to. Then, you can store them there when you get to your destination if you're taking a long lunch, or put them away if there's...
  8. Yeah, I found a fabulous walking stick in hawaii. It's beautifully carved, and a lovely example of wood in its own right. But we're bipeds! The only reason I suggest seeing a doctor first is this: While the knee *primarily* bends only as a hinge joint (one axis), it does have *some* motion in other directions - twisting directions. It's supposed...
  9. there are a couple of recipes using balsamic on my long recipes thread for, I believe: balsamic vinaigrette marinated vegatables (you can use the same marinade on chicken) sautees mushrooms
  10. Yep, eggs don't come from the milk producing glands of a mammal, so they're not dairy. (Isn't that a pleasant mental image!)
  11. 2 things: 1. Have an ortho check it out - it's worth it to make sure you don't have "a little wonky thing" that'll turn into a "big wonky thing. The ortho'll probably send you on to PT after verifying it's not going to turn into a "big wonky thing", but that's probably where you want to end up anyway, after verifying what the issue is. 2. Get trekking...
  12. Quaker, Blue Diamond (about the onlly thing that I've reacted to that most people haven't - usually, it's the other way 'round)
  13. The problem with this theory is that they're doing a blood test for antibodies which are generated in the intestines, a system which is designed to keep all but small molecules out of the bloodstream. You have to ingest enough gluten to damage the intestines sufficiently for them to 'leak' antibodies that would not normally enter the bloodstream. That is...
  14. Kali's Kitchen (I too have had experience with the owner being somewhat... interesting), Flying Apron Bakery (and their stuff is available at the Elliot Bookstore as well), and the Sunlight Cafe all pop to mind first. Search the site for the other relatively recent Seattle thread for a few more hits, besides the normal PF Changs, Z'Tehas, and Outback. There...
  15. Tinkyada taste just like regular pasta - none of my friends notice the difference. The Italian gluten-free pastas are quite good as well. Celiac is actually quite common in Italy, and many of the better replacements come from there. There's a LOT of Italian stuff that is naturally gluten-free or naturally made gluten free. Bread's the tricky one, but...
  16. I am horrified at the faulty logic. "Well, smoking doesn't significantly increase the cost of cosmetic surgery for age lines, so there's no reason to advise people to stop smoking." Uh... what about the *numerous* other deleterious effects of untreated celiac disease? Those are non-trivial factors in calculating the cost-benefit ratio for testing. At...
  17. I was fully out, and they had my mouth cranked open, and it was a bit sore, but not too bad. (They had to do it that way - some of the roots were dangerously close to the nerves, and the surgery was a bit risky on its own, and there was the possibility that the teeth would have to be cracked in half before being removed.) Do make sure that the oral surgeon...
  18. Even Enterolab notes that they can only detect antibodies in the stool for up to a year after going gluten-free. The only way to know if you react to gluten is to see if your body produces antibodies in response to gluten, hence you have to consume gluten for there to be something for your body to react to.
  19. Congrats!
  20. If you still can't find it, you can always add lactaid drops to regular whole milk. It may be, when all is said and done, cheaper.
  21. There's very little you can do constructively. Pounding them over the head will only piss them off. Living your life well - proof the the gluten-free diet has given you more energy and made you feel so much better as well as proof that it is hardly a burden at all - is the best message you can give them. Giving facts about it, only when absolutely appropriate...
  22. If it's hypoglycemia type stuff, the pancakes or cereal could be the problem - too many carbs (and fairly simple ones) and not enough fat and protein... If I eat too much sugary stuff after an extended time not eating, by the time I'm done with the meal, the dramatic change in blood sugar makes me feel very ill.
  23. Not TSS, but some people with vaginismus or with some subtypes of vulvodynia have this problem. DO talk to your gynecologist about this.
  24. I don't know any other way to explain it, but if you google for the NIH consensus paper on celiac disease, you'll find that even they note that you don't have to be under- or normal- weight to have celiac.
