  1. I haven't had a cake for my birthday in... about 22 years. I hate cake. Well, I hate most birthday cakes. There are a handful of cakes that don't suck, but mostly, cakes aren't worth it. :-) Give me a big ol' bowl of strawberries instead! I'm glad someone did get you something, and the idea of bringing a gluten-free cake to share sounds great!
  2. I have a friend who's running it, and will be down in the area that weekend! :-) There's a Buca Di Beppo (which has gluten free items) nearby to Disneyland, and, I think, an Outback. (My first apartment in the area was just down the street, the apartment I last lived in for five years was 20 mintues away.) There's a great raw/vegetarian place in Fountain...
  3. Something I heard once (greatly paraphrased), "If I'm suffering with cancer, and sick from treatments, and you come to visit and stub your toe really hard on the coffee table, my pain from cancer and chemotherapy doesn't make your toe hurt any less." You're sister (who thinks her's is, by far, the worse situation) needs to learn this (though I don't think...
  4. Best advice ever! Ditto a hundred times!
  5. I've eaten there before without a problem, but don't get the cheese or sour cream (no dairy for me), so don't know if that could have been a problem...
  6. Lol... quantity matters in everything, at the bottom of it. Drink only one glass of water in a week in the sun and you'll be dead. Drink 10 gallons of water in an hour, and it'll kill you too. Toxicity is always dose dependent. One molecule of gluten will be insufficient to cause any real damage that your body would notice in any way. It'd be "in the...
  7. I use cocoa powder, a milk sub, and a sweetener to make my hot chocolate as well. I don't know about UK brands (though I believe cadbury's is a "will clearly mark on the label" company), but it's usually safe. try calling the company today to double check.
  8. Antibodies and the other chemicals resulting from the autoimmune reaction in your intestines when you eat gluten linger for weeks to months. So, if you cheat once a week or even once a month, you increase your risk for intestinal cancers, lymphoma, other autoimmune diseases, and nutritional deficiencies like anemia and osteoporosis. You can check out the...
  9. lol... yes, it is possible that they would have the only accurate version of the truth on a subject available anywhere. it is also possible that all the air in a room will gather in one small corner, leaving a complete vaccum everywhere else (I've done the calculation for homework). with no editorial controls, the likelihood of getting unbiased information...
  10. Wikipedia's good for non-controversial things. Want a definition of yaw/pitch/roll? Feel free to look it up there. Want a discussion of the math of an ellipsoid? Feel free to look it up there. What a discussion of the Hitler's childhood? The benefits of dairy? The management style of Microsoft's Balmer? Don't, for heaven's sake, look there. ...
  11. That's one of the many things I like about the method - you can use it to go from avoiding pregnancy to planning one whenever you want. Because you know what your body is doing. I opted not to do classes at a church, because I am not religious, and choose not to use abstinence during fertile times. (There are lots of non-religious resources as well....
  12. CarlaB can correct me if I'm incorrect, but the method I use is to assume that you are fertile if you are producing any fertile-quality cervical mucous, and for three days after your basal body temperature spike. That's usually around 8 days out of the month. You can also use cervix location, which changes during the cycle, to detect ovulation. (I referenced...
  13. I too have heard mostly negative things about depo. I know there are a few people out there happy with it, but it seems as though more are unhappy with it than happy with it. I'm using FAM (fertility awareness) with condoms as a backup, because my body doesn't handle hormones well, and I'm not a candidate for the copper IUD (I'm prone to severe cramping...
  14. it's just a chemical from a plant, though. as is sugar. :-P
  15. There are plenty of places with kitchens (I travelled here for meetings before moving here), just search for them by amenity. There's PF Chang's and Outback and Z'Tejas, and then a bunch of smaller places in the city as well. There's Cafe Flora, and the Flying Apron Bakery (both dedicated). The Sunlight Cafe has mostly vegetarian stuff with a bunch of...
  16. there haven't been as many studies on stevia as on splenda/aspartame/etc., but you can look them up on pubmed. one study showed reduced sperm producting in the testes of mice. another couldn't find the same results. that's the most controversial thing I could find. the europeans have listed it as 'believed to be safe' for a while, I believe. I use it...
  17. I generally use the flax meal method.
  18. I've had them since I was 23, but never had kids, always ate plenty of fiber, and drank plenty of water. What worked best to get rid of them? Cutting out dairy - the constipation it caused (not great though it was - and mostly it was a 'hard' C, not the 'infrequent' C) was the primary culprit.
  19. Welcome! There's a lot we all learn from each other - it's a great place!
  20. I never use xanthum in quick breads or almost any muffin.
  21. I take it you do BBT charting. My understanding is that many - perhaps more than half, though I don't remember the number - early pregnancies (prior to three or four weeks) end in miscarriage. It's *extremely* common among all women. TCOYF (Taking Charge of Your Fertility) has the numbers and study references in it. That said, celiac can still affect...
  22. If you've ever tried cleaning a toaster, the answer would scream "use a separate toaster". :-)
  23. Three times in two weeks?! I wouldn't be comfortable with that either. That's too much contamination risk. Talking to him about doing it a bit less often, and talking to the manager and the chef, not just a website.
  24. have you seen your doctor yet? did I miss that bit where you went in for the additional tests and got the results? *poke*
  25. I've been told and read that it wasn't - and in general, low impact isn't as weight bearing - but I could well be wrong about that. It's certainly better than standing! :-) The impact itself helps stimulate bone growth, but the pressure helps as well. Interesting question... We'll have to see if we can find any more information on it! :-)
