  1. Gah! Not crappy optometrists too?! Even a small difference can cause a headache in sensitive folks, especially if it's astigmatism.
  2. If your recipe calls for baking soda or baking powder (or yeast, but I've never seen a pumpkin bread with that one), then no, you do *not* use self-rising flour. Look at the recipe, and if it calls for self-rising flour, get a self-rising gluten-free flour. I prefer to use a mix of flours that I make at home, for the type of bread I'm making, rather than...
  3. Is she hypoglycemic? That can cause headaches daily if not controlled.
  4. I prefer crumb crusts. So I make bread (usually pumpkin bread - especially for pumpkin pie), then slice it, dry it in the oven, and crush it up (in a Cuisinart), and use that, wetted with a little apple sauce (2-4tbsp) and/or a little (tbsp or two) of oil). pressed into a pan, then filled with pie whatever. :-)
  5. Just use a milk sub and add flavoring? That's what I'd do if I drank coffee, though you'd have to keep it refrigerated and it wouldn't stay good for that long.
  6. Even in that case, I expect to wait. When I was a freshman, I experienced abdominal pain that had been coming on over the course of the day. It was ... right side? I don't remember - one side. Lower quadrant. Fairly sharpe, intense, and the most pain I've ever been in. I couldn't stand up straight, let alone stand up, and was having a difficult time...
  7. while some of those things happen to me when I get a migraine, I'd think the lexapro withdrawl is far likelier. isn't a week pretty fast to come off that med? most of the meds I've titraed on that were meds you had to be careful of titrating, it was done over the course of a month or so.
  8. oh, good point, lorka, I wasn't thinking "important things to cook with". on that front, I'd put these five up: san-j wheat free tamari thai kitchen chili paste ginger people ginger juice spice hunter spices almond breeze
  9. you can get gas moving through the intestines that you don't ever notice passing, or can feel things moving through in ways that can get uncomfortable. i usually find it happens if I've had too much fiber, or generally something else that my body doesn't like in quantity. (this time, it was too much banana bread. ;-) ) always check what you've been eating...
  10. there's a major blood supply in the area, and you may be feeling your pulse in this area. try comparing the 'pulsing' you feel there to the timing of taking your pulse at your wrist or neck. (it wouldn't pulse at the exact same moment, but should be at the same frequency.) and, yes, being able to feel your pulse in your abdomen can come and go, particularly...
  11. Actually, I think this is the sort of thing that is *hurting* our cause. If you look at the actual numbers, medical professionals are doing a good job at helping the masses. The problem is one of perspective. The person who comes in with something that doesn't fall in the '90% of cases I see are this' that the doctor is used to doesn't care ONE BIT about...
  12. andrew, one thing to consider is that the celiac reaction in the intestines is a chemical one, right? what happens when you're in a kitchen with flour, and you breath in, and happen to have your mouth open? and you're doing this for, say, 10 minutes, because you're in a kitchen where a friend is cooking? you get a bit of flour on your tongue and you swallow...
  13. I'm guessing you want pre-packaged, store bought items? Tinkyada Pasta (good for hot or cold pasta dishes) Clif Nectar Bars (good food in a pinch) Bob's Red Mill Flax Meal (used with Cream of Rice) Vitamin Water (great on those hikes) Welshire Farms Chicken Apple Sausages (good in a number of recipes)
  14. I think, at this age, there's a little you can do, and a little you can't. I think, in situations like these, you *should* consider bringing along a few chips and cookies (get or make healthier versions that you don't mind him having occasionally, in small quantities), and simply don't eat them yourself. (If you find yourself tempted, remember that he needs...
  15. On the positive side, you've identified what the problem is - it could easily have taken much longer. And it is very controllable, and without expensive pharmaceuticals with nasty side effects. There are some down sides in things he won't get to have that other kids will, but there are upsides in things he will get to have that other kids won't (including...
  16. If you were losing that much weight, then yep it was probably from not getting nearly enough calories. Glad to hear you're doing better.
  17. I find it frustrating when people say "I know I really need to but I don't have time to exercise" and then turn around and talk about their 10 favorite TV shows or the three hours they spent on the internet or the four other seated hobbies they have! ARGH! I have some sympathy for it taking time to change things. Some things take time. I complain...
  18. lol... driving almost anywhere else makes me scream bloody murder at people who can't go over the speed limit, are too chicken to merge at freeway speeds, and let everyone and their brother move over before continuing on. :-) maybe just living in california is it's own "aggresive driving" course. :-P SF, itself, is definitely worse since it's SO dense....
  19. Yeah, I usually bruise too. They look at me funny when I pre-emptively ask for ice for when they're done. They usually say "well, we'll see how it goes afterwards" and I'm like "hey, I know what my arm looks like half an hour after a blood draw 75% of the time, you don't. just give me the ice pack, thank you!" (they can wrap a small one to your arm so...
  20. San Jose's the closest airport, but if you can't get a good flight there (don't see why that'd be a problem though), Oakland would probably be easier than San Francisco. I grew up in San Jose and used SFO before, so never really thought of it as a traffic nightmare, more than any other major airport, though. :-P
  21. 1. you need to take, at a minimum, a calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium supplement. studies have shown the magnesium is as, if not more, important than calcium for celiacs for bone density. and calcium is not useful without D for bone growth. 2. make sure to stay strictly gluten free, so you get the minerals and vitamins (and nutrition) you need! 3. ellipticals...
  22. :-) I'm not good at keeping things simple... Hmm... (I just double checked my biology book to be sure :-) ) since nerve cells rely on glucose as a sole source of fuel, there are checks in place to make sure that there is always glucose for the nerve cells. so, through a signalling process related to levels of insulin in the bloodstream, the liver...
  23. What about chili? Or soup?
  24. I'll add that your muscles store glycogen, a storage form of glucose that isn't *immediately* available the way glucose in the bloodstream is, that is a more immediate form of energy than fat. Glycogen is stored in the muscles, and you can, over time, change how much glycogen is stored, but this is usually something only endurance athletes bother to do....
