  1. *hugs* I'm sorry. Please ignore your annoying family members. They sound ignorant, and just because they are family does NOT mean that they are right. (You know that, of course!) As for doctors, maybe you'll get lucky, though you might need to drive a bit farther. :-( I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
  2. Welcome to the board. The biopsy is your choice - you have to determine how important a formal diagnosis is, and find out whether or not your doctor will give you a formal diagnosis without the biopsy. The treatment is fairly straight-forward, a gluten free diet. The intricacies of eating gluten free - the food and the social aspect - is exactly what...
  3. shelled hemp seeds taste good in a number of things - yogurt, hot cereal, and on salads. I don't particularly like the taste of rice bran, but use it occasionally. the taste of rice protein powder isn't fabulous either, but I use it in my smoothies and in some baking. you can also get 'peaceful planet' protein powder (that's vegetarian and GFCFEFSF), and...
  4. mmm... sugar substitutes. another reason to stick to whole foods, naturally gluten-free.
  5. Unfortunately, the testing that was done was incomplete in such a fashion that you cannot say that she doesn't have celiac. A number of celiacs are IgA deficient, which means that *all* of the IgA antibodies are low, and can't be compared to standard numbers. Essentially, those with IgA deficiencies are playing with a short deck at all times. Assuming...
  6. Why can't you cook? At a time like that, I'd eat (based on what's normally in my house): eggs on rice cakes (or with rice) peanut butter on rice cakes peanut butter on an apple a handful of almonds and a few dried apricots raw carrots with homemade hummus (yes, I'd make hummus ;-) )
  7. I feel ya. I went to a small math/science college, majored in physics, and work in comp. sci. And while going gluten free is pretty logical ( if(gluten.quantity > 20ppm) BAD! ), dealing with the hypoglycemia stuff is simply not that cut and dry. And not even as clear cut as Atkins. It is similar to Atkins, though, in that you want to keep simple carbs...
  8. lol... oh, vincent! I feel for you... with your astronomy, and this post, I'm guessing you're a pure science type. but don't forget the art that goes into science. if physics lab taught me nothing else, it's that there *is* an awful lot of art to the science. ;-) and this, in particular, is simply NOT straight numbers. but your experience with atkins...
  9. I also posted one in my 'as promised, a few recipes' post - it's a rice based stuffing recipe, with mushrooms.
  10. 9pm on the west coast too. always check your local listings. ;-)
  11. yep, baking, rice pudding, and some soups.
  12. No argument over vegetarian/carnivore out of me; I understand both sides of the fence. I would suggest, also, that you may be too dependent upon soy, and my concern primarily comes from the worry that you will develop an intolerance to that as well. I'm gluten free and casein free as well, but find that I can't have too much soy. Due to hypoglycemic tendencies...
  13. no one said pb&j wasn't a good plan - it's a matter of you finding out if it'll work for you. on a complex carb (low glycemic load) bread, with plenty of peanut butter, and not too much jam (particularly one that's not too high in sugar), it may be totally fine for you. it works fine for me if I've been eating reasonably balanced for the week. it...
  14. give it a little time if i've been 'off the wagon', it'll take a day or two of eating *well* balanced meals to fix up my blood sugar levels to a maintenance mode. three hours isn't bad when you're getting started. hopefully the banana & pb helps (btw, underripe bananas - at least not overripe), are better, as not all the complex carbs have already...
  15. that'd be too much sugar for me - cocoa puffs have a lot of sugar - but you'll only know if it'll work once you try it. it's *highly* personal, and there isn't a universal right or wrong answer. see how it goes tomorrow.
  16. yep, something with fat or protein (or both!) to go with the sorbet is good. this is why a balanced meal of grilled meats and vegetables is a good idea - you're getting the combination of what you need. look at your meals, and if you've got just a bunch of carbs, but no fat or protein to go with it, you'll know you'll have a problem iwth that. but remember...
  17. hypoglycemia is just a condition of having low blood sugar. what is actually causing it is far more complicated. diabetics can become hypoglycemic when they take too much insulin. those who have reactive hypoglycemia instead tend to be hyper sensitive to sugars, 'stashing' them into their cells too quickly, causing the level of sugar in the blood to drop...
  18. fasting can make the issue worse, as your blood sugar goes down further.. an apple with two tablespoons of peanut butter is certainly better than nothing, even if it's not precise. the main point is not to have too much carbs. if all you can do is have a hardboiled egg on those salads you have, do that. just don't have things that are primarily carbs...
  19. it really depends on how severe the diabetes is. you may not have to give up fruit, you may have to moderate it though, and reduce how much fruit you eat and select the lower sugar fruits. (berries are a good one, however! bananas - particularly very ripe ones - may be out, though.)
  20. Yep, if I'm going to make baked goods for people, they're going to get gluten free stuff. :-P
  21. it's just not that simple - it depends on the proportions and the ingredients. most egg salads I've seen have potatoes in them, but if it's just eggs and mayo, then you've got room in there for some chips to round it out. drinking a whole soda on that probably would add too much sugar, but until you've gotten the hang of this, you're going to have to get...
  22. I vote PF Changs, because I LOVE their lettuce wraps! ;-)
  23. most meals can fit that sort of bill, as long as you take care with the proportions. turkey chili, with plenty of turkey and veggies, for instance. grilled meat with veggies works, and you can have a side starch, you just can't have two cups of rice or a giant baked potatoe (make it a small one, or just a heaping pile of lower carb veggies) a spinach...
  24. the crystal works for me, but it's not an anti-perspirant at all, only stops the bacterial smell.
  25. the best way to find out if you're having hypoglycemic problems is to eat truely balanced meals (at least 25% fat, 25% protein, no more than 50% carbs) at *every* meal/snack for at least four days, and see if you feel different. yes, it's a PITA, but it may make a big difference. dcotors office tests - and this is something my doctor told me - will only...
