  1. that's a lot of carbs - is this a hypoglycemic thing you're getting? it sounds similar to my symptoms.
  2. You should also call the manufacturer to verify the gluten status as the pharmacist may or may not be helpful. (I don't know off the top of my head - though most are gluten-free). One interesting note, a recent study (past six months) has shown that *some* (not all) women experience significantly suppressed testosterone levels while on, and for at least...

Welcome to the board. this helpful group of people will have you gluten-free in no time! :-)
  4. this is where a hard-core elimination diet can help. they suck, and they require a lot of pre-planning, and did I mention they suck. (they are harder mentally, than physically, because you are litterally eating no more than a dozen foods in a week, and maybe only four or five in a day - that includes your spices and cooking tools like oils.) the basic...
  5. only it's not like lactose intolerance, because it's not that a missing enzyme keeps a sugar from being broken down which is later broken down by bacteria. lactose intolerance (like most sugar intolerances), are misnomers of a sort, because they're all about enzyme deficiencies, and are actually benign, if quite a pain, symptomatically. and they can be ...
  6. an allergic reaction means one that is mediated by the IgE immune molecule family. celiac disease is not mediated by that chemical pathway. it is mediated by the IgG and IgA immune molecule family. that's why it is an intolerance, not an allergy. one ramification of this difference is that celiac disease does not have the potential to cause anaphylactic...
  7. Most thai restaurants (true thai, not thai fusion) will be able to accomodate you, as their ingredients are often naturally gluten free. You'll want to talk to the staff, of course, but there's almost always a few items to choose from.
  8. yep, if you have no meat juices (like, you made mashed potatoes, but no meat! ;-) ), you can just use a good broth - but it must be a high quality broth. i've uded both used sweet rice flour or corn starch for thickening.
  9. welcome to the board!
  10. nope, haven't tried. i would stick to the gluten-free beers that are definitely made from gluten-free ingredients in gluten-free environments.
  11. eh... they all have milk! (checked yesterday, as I was smacked in the jaw with a tree during a volunteer restoration event snd eating real food is tricky.) homemade smoothies are a good option too, though you'll need to be aware of ingredients, using protein powders (I use rice to minimize soy intake) and fat containing iems loke flax oil and coconut milk...
  12. welcome to the board!
  13. No, low-residue means that you're only eating foods that are almost entirely absorbed - you may already be on a similar diet. It's fairly low in fiber, because the whole point is that there is very little stool produced at all. You can google it to find out more (I've done it for short times in the past when my hemmhorids were giving me serious trouble...
  14. People don't really need to 'get it', they just need to not give her gluten. Understanding... that's bonus points. Following your orders (you're the mom, after all), is all that's needed. In the case of your FIL, a simple "It doesn't matter if you don't believe me, you can go do the research on the biomechanics of this disorder on your own then. Just...
  15. I wonder if a combination of lighter depends (for bladder incontinence) and a low-residue diet (if your intolerances allow it, for the bowel incontinence) would help. I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to feel trapped near a restroom, but I'm certain that depends would be 'invisible' in comparison to that.
  16. wine should be gluten free (have never seen one that wasn't), and the rice pudding *should* be, but as always, check with them on their ingredients.
  17. We can't ask for any more! :-) It's looking like it will be a nice day, my husband will be joining me, and possibly a friend as well.
  18. I'm glad it wasn't cancer, but sorry that life in general is sucking so much right now. *hugs*
  19. I really do appreciate the thought, but I hate asking people for money, especially people I don't know in real life. If you really want to do something, I'd urge you to make a gift of your time at a local support group if there isn't an event near you! :-)
  20. the gluten itself leaves the body fairly quickly (it's probably gone by now - average clearance times are 12 to 60 hours), but the chemical reaction it starts can continue for 5 to 10 days, and the recovery of the intestines can take longer.
  21. I'm doing the Seattle walk (supports GIG) on May 20th. If you're in the area, come out! :-)
  22. Some people will, some won't. Some people are seriously 'oogied' by intimate relationships with people they think of as fragile, for a number of reasons - physical and psychological. But those sort of people won't be right for you because you'll need more than that. I wouldn't say that most people are, and I wouldn't say that you're in a particularly bad...
  23. That's fabulous! :-)
  24. To get him formally diagnosed, he's going to have to be eating gluten (and a lot of it) for a number of months. Determination of celiac disease is done by identifying the extensive damage it causes after it has been active for a while, so to get a dx, you have to cause all that damage first. It may be important enough to do the dx (that's a personal decision...
  25. You can put 1/3 cup regular popcorn kernels in lunch size brown paper bag, fold over the top (by a 1/2" or so, twice) and staple twice, at least three inches apart) and microwave (approximately 2.5 minutes, but go by sound and it's better to pop less than burn). Because the microwaves are long compared to the size of the staples and the spacing between them...
