ARCHIVED What Is The Role Of The Nih In Educating The Public About Gluten Intolerance ?
tarnalberry replied to marciab's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
it's just not high enough on the priority list for them, so they spend most of their time on their higher profile campaigns, like the bird flu, breast cancer, and aids. part of that priority is politics too - celiac disease isn't a terribly media-friendly condition. but the NIH doesn't really set standards of care any more than the various medical organizations... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Fried Rice-like Rice A Roni-is There Any?
tarnalberry replied to kathy1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
you can also cook rice with chicken broth and add spices. (take a glance at the rice a roni package to find out what they use. ;-) ) -
ARCHIVED Will I Ever Feel Better?
tarnalberry replied to ebrbetty's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I usually don't add liquid - just fresh fruit. if you're using frozen fruit, then just enough water to blend is the way I usually go. -
The same way you've learned an amazing amount about gluten and celiac - lots of reading, and learning from other people. (And the fact I ask my doctors more questions than they want to answer, and follow it up reading the medical journal studies. Let's just say they have to earn the money my insurance company gives them. ;-) ) A fair amount of what I've...

ARCHIVED Food For Life Tortillas
tarnalberry replied to IronedOut's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
you're probably going to want to find your own recipe to make ones like what you used to use, and they won't have the same shelf life. :-( -
I'm still not certain what's up with the non-candida "white tongue" thing. What I've learned tells me that a generally whitish tongue that comes and goes that never develops patches on other parts of the mouth is just normal. (Add what happens if you get sinus drainage, and a touch of yellow to it, and it does become disgusting, if if 'normal'. Doc's have...

ARCHIVED Will I Ever Feel Better?
tarnalberry replied to ebrbetty's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
a smoothie's just blended fruit. no reason it needs to have gluten, and it only has dairy if you add it. do all fruits bother you? if not, blend up the ones that don't. one that I like, that doesn't have anything obviously acidic, is bananas, peaches, and blueberries. bananas, mango, and strawberries are good too. (that last one is even better with... -
ARCHIVED Food For Life Tortillas
tarnalberry replied to IronedOut's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They're not the same as regular flour tortillas, but they do take a spot that isn't filled by corn tortillas. They're not half bad for some purposes, but you'll have to see how you like them. (Don't forget to heat them in the microwave. I like to use wet towels around them, myself.) -
ARCHIVED What Could This Be?
tarnalberry replied to danikali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
the pleurisy isn't to do with asthma at all, it's incidental that the same drugs are used to treat it. but it can get worse, so it's worth making sure that's not what it is. and yes, food allergies can cause difficulty breathing, but usually in a throat-closing sort of way. -
no worries, we know you weren't meaning to yell. :-) if you're using Mozilla or Internet Explorer, and you go to the View menu, and select Font Size, and then select Largest, you can get a larger font. Additionally, you can go to the Tools menu, select Internet Options, select the Accessibility button in the lower right corner, and click the top three check...

Blerg - no doctor worth his/her degree should ever prescribe antibiotics for yeast. If they do, run, because they're stupid. (I've heard of doctors who do this, but haven't seen it for myself...)

ARCHIVED What Could This Be?
tarnalberry replied to danikali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Is it anything like: Open Original Shared Link? I had that once, and at first I thought it was an asthma attack, but it started feeling more and more like I was wearing a spandex shirt about four sizes too small. There's additional treatment for that, besides "motrin". Better anti-inflammatories than motrin, for one, and using something like advair (the... -
ARCHIVED I Need A Gluten Free, Soy Free, And Dairy Free Cooking Oil!
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You can get your own sprayer so that you can have nearly the same functionality, but with your own oil. -
ARCHIVED Food Testing Methodology
tarnalberry replied to Packard's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You have to have completely knowledge of what you are ingesting if you're going to determine what foods to eliminate - that means bringing your own, self-packed lunch and not eating out until you've finished testing. A more rigorous approach would be to make a menu - for a week or two, at least. eat that menu, record your symptoms along with the foods... -
ARCHIVED Prepackaged gluten-free Flour Vs. Homemade
tarnalberry replied to lonewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I do it for the taste. My husband isn't a fan of gluten free flours, in general, so when I find a combination that he likes enough that he'll eat pancakes with me (he's not gluten free), I'll buy it. I have not been able to make a mix like that myself. For my own general baking, I do not usually use store bought mixes. -
ARCHIVED What Does "celiac Disease Causes Damage To The Intestines" Mean.
tarnalberry replied to marciab's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
damage to the intestines is just that: the chemical process that causes the immune system to recognize and react to gluten proteins makes a molecule that degrades the villi - hair like "appendanges" - in the intestines that actually do the work of secreting enzymes for digestion and taking up the broken down by-products of that digestion. when the damage... -
ARCHIVED Roasted Nuts
tarnalberry replied to danikali's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I believe it's part of the fermentation process - a starch source. It's a matter of production. -
ARCHIVED Desperation Point
tarnalberry replied to nick's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
given how uncommon it is to check for the celiac antibodies, it's almost certain that the IgG they tested for was not anti-gliandin IgG. (IgG is a class of molecule, you can have IgG antibodies to many different substances. Including your own body tissue.) At this point, there's plenty of reason for the doctors to continue their testing, but if he's willing... -
Welcome to the board! It is full of fabulously helpful people. :-)

ARCHIVED What Are Your Favorite Things From "whole Foods" ?
tarnalberry replied to kathy1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Two things, primarily: Ruth's Hemp Bars and Perky's Nutty Rice. (Their store-brand gluten-free bread has dairy... everything except for the muffins, which are too rich for my tastebuds.) -
Yep. Some studies show that, in celiacs, not only in calcium absorption a problem, but so is magnesium absorption. Their results showed it was more important to supplement magnesium than calcium in celiacs with lower-than-normal bone density. Don't forget weight bearing exercise as well, along with the Ca, Mg, and Vit. D.

If you haven't mentioned this exact symptoms to your doctor, make sure you do. There are other, non-celiac, and organic, causes to this problem. But, of course, staying completely gluten-free is vital. (PS - can you not post in all caps? it's the equivalent of shouting on the internet, and can be hard to read. thanks. ;-) )

ARCHIVED When To Re-introduce Gluten?
tarnalberry replied to smjohn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In a case like that, where your tests are not showing large, obvious damage, I would say a month - until you feel like you don't see any further improvement - of being *STRICTLY* gluten free. (Start that month over if you have an accident.) Then challenge until you get obvious symptoms or for two to four weeks. Then back to gluten-free, again looking for... -
ARCHIVED Will I Ever Feel Better?
tarnalberry replied to ebrbetty's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I second the "whole, naturally Gluten-free Casein-free foods" approach. Breakfast can come in the form of eggs, smoothies (from fresh/frozen fruit, not mixes), rice cakes with peanut butter, etc., or leftovers. Any meal can be any thing! ;-) Do make sure to double check all your foods - no soy sauce (unless it's a wheat free tamari or the wheat-free la... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Personal Lubricants?
tarnalberry replied to tammy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't seen ingredients in regular lube that would make me question the gluten-free status. (I check ingredients because I'm sensitive to nonoxyl-9 (the spermicide - and a notorious irritant) and try to stay away from propylene glycol. So I scour ingredient lists - propylene glycol is very common in lubes, but should be gluten-free.) You'd want to call...
