  1. nope, I don't tend to post on delphi... one forum is enough for me to keep track of. :-) I'm not, however, the pro-baker. Ah well. I'm working on a spring roll recipe I hope to add to the list soon. (my post with the recipes is in the recipes section, titled "As Promised, A Few Recipes." there's a lot of other really good posts in that forum too - particularly...
  2. the produce section, the aisle with the rice and beans, the meat/fish counter, and the dairy section. :-) whole, naturally gluten free foods don't run contamination risks and are MUCH cheaper. look around here, though, for lists of brands that will list gluten in the ingredients, if you want packaged items.
  3. I just want to check on this: you know you have to avoid more than just wheat, right? you also have to avoid rye, barley, and oats, and all the hidden ingredients that could contain gluten, like modified food starch and soy sauce.
  4. I think the red quinoa tastes better, personally.
  5. You need to focus on all the things you CAN have, not what you can't. Invite people to your place and cook gluten-free for them. Experiment with a couple new gluten-free recipes every week. Get some exercise every day. Instead of socializing around food, start socializing around exercise (go for a walk with a friend) or something else (a craft, for instance...
  6. There are a couple of gluten free frozen dinners in the health food stores, like Amy's. I think Seeds of Change may have one, and there's a Thai or Indian line that makes one or two as well. For really easy meals, I like Amy's lentil soup, or the boxed Imagine Soups that are gluten-free.
  7. the best way to get the answer to that is to read lots of posts. like anything, celiacs have different tastes and different coping mechanisms. asking what they like to eat is much like asking "what do women like to eat?" - it runs that gamut really.
  8. what about swimming (or just walking in a pool) or weights?
  9. I eat it with no problems.
  10. Besides making sure you're gluten-free, also - for now - reduce the amount of iodine in your diet. It is required to produce the deposits that cause DH, so getting rid of it for a while can help. (You can reintroduce after a number of months if you maintain the gluten-free diet.)
  11. I am now! (moved up here three months ago)
  12. Those don't have to be your staples. Specialty gluten-free pastas like Tinkyada are made from rice and rice bran, so they have the fiber and protein that will give them a similar glycemic index to whole wheat pasta. And the other gluten-free grains have more protein and fiber (and fat) than wheat anyway - buckwheat, millet, quinoa, teff, not to mention...
  13. hot cereals that are multigrain can be higher in fiber, and Nutty Rice is pretty good. you can add a banana to get a bit more fiber, or sprinkle on some flax meal too.
  14. I think I got both of them at my local book store, but amazon has them as well.
  15. Now, I know this comes from a cookbook, and that means it's not the most unbiased source of information, but the raw foods cookbook I have note that there are a couple different types of juicer - they physically work different - and you may find that one works better for a particular need than another. so, research is in order. if I get one, it will likely...
  16. the two allergy cookbooks I have: Allergy Friendly Food: The Essential Guide to Avoiding Allergens, Additives, and Problem Chemicals by Dr. Anne R Swain, Dr. Velencia L Soutter, and Dr. Robert H Loblay. The Allergy Self-Help Cookbook by Marjorie Hurt Jones, RN. I also like The Complete Book of Raw Food" by Baird Rodwell for some tasty alternatives. ...
  17. actually, I worry most about mexican restaurants. cross contamination of the chips can be a big problem if they fry their own, as well as dealing with even the corn tortillas being heated up on the same grill as the flour. beyond that, I'm concerned about the sauces - enchilada sauce and other thickened sauces can be made with wheat - and meat that's been...
  18. I don't know what you're referring to when you say your "combined percent". The blood tests for celiac disease are anti-gliandin IgA and IgG, anti-tissue transglutimerage IgG, endomyosial antibodies, and total IgA. You *must* be eating gluten (in the amount of approximately 3 slices of bread a day for three months) for the tests to have a reasonable chance...
  19. something is causing an allergic reaction - or the zyrtec wouldn't have helped. have you tried going off the singulair (only after discussing with your doctor, of course)? you could be reacting to it as well. other than that, checking everything you have that you come in contact with would be a start. if you have no luck, you might want to enlist the...
  20. The Gluten Free Gourmet (Bette Hagaman) is often recommended. I have a couple of her books, and find that I don't use them very often as she likes to use gelatin (which I don't usually have) and dry milk powder (I've been off dairy). Mostly, I adapt recipes I want to try myself, and rely on a couple allergy cookbooks (The Self-Help Allergy Cookbook, and...
  21. you don't get quite all the nutrients in the juice, of course (particularly fiber), but that's not to say it's bad for you, of course. ;-) I plan on getting a juicer eventually (other things to spend the money on at the moment), so I can make some more esoteric juices.
  22. you might consider talking to your dr. about the ring - as it isn't oral (same with the patch), the liver doesn't have to process it, and in the case of the ring, the effects don't *appear* to be systemic. on the other hand, studies have shown synthetic hormones in birthcontrol to lower free testosterone levels in women dramatically - measure for as long...
  23. digestive enzymes may help a bit, but you can't take a pill that covers all the enzymes your body makes. the surface area of the villi is also what *absorbs* the by products, and there's no supplement that will do that for your body, so until those are healed to at least some degree, you may have absorption issues. the only thing that speeds up the...
  24. congrats!
  25. Every time I have gotten them, they have had sheets of wax paper between them. From what I read on the boards, this was something they did a few months after they rolled them out. I've never seen them in a freezer section (just refrigerator) but with the wax paper, they come apart just fine. You might try taking a look at a package the next time you're...
