  1. As with any non-single ingredient item, you have to read the labels. Some companies will use wheat in some of their recipes, some don't. Wheat isn't a universal ingredient in baked beans, like it is in sourdough bread, so not all baked bean recipes have flour, so it's possible to find gluten-free baked beans. But wheat is a cheap filler and thickens sauces...
  2. one of my rice pudding recipes is on my "as promised, a few recipes" thread. but yeah, it's pretty much the same. I use almond milk instead of water, however, for a sweetness and vanilla flavor (in addition to whatever I add for additional flavor). generally speaking, I'll be more careful to stir more often (if only my kitchenAid mixer could heat as well...
  3. You have to read the labels. Cocao beans don't contain any casein - they're a plant. So, if casein isn't added to the processing of the beans, there won't be any casein in the final product. Milk chocolate, for instance, has milk added to it, so of course it will contain casein. Hot cocoa, if it's made with milk, will have had milk added to it, so of...
  4. I don't know the specifics, but I believe they use barley in the filtering of the rice/water mixture, possibly for the subtle flavor changes it gives the liquid.
  5. It's tough when we don't get the acceptance we want from a parent. But they are human, and have the same failings our friends do. You may never get the acceptance and recognition that this is real that you want from her, and if that's the case, as long as you expect it, you'll be disapointed - and since it's your mom letting you down, you'll be hurt too...
  6. so spice up those things - add some saffron and salt to the rice. or use arborio, add a bit of sugar and vanilla, and make rice pudding. steam the chicken and shred it into some water with carrots and onions. or barbecue it with garlic and olive oil rubbed in it. mix up the beans with some cumin and cayanne with an onion. or simmer with some molasses...
  7. I wouldn't call it food group combinging, but I almost never eat carbs alone (certainly not simple carbs) because it can give me a headache and make me feel nauseous. nothing mysterious about that, though - it's just a simple hypoglycemic response.
  8. plain canned beans, I always double check the ingredients (they aren't always 'just beans), but are usually fine. you may want to watch for 'processed in a factory that processes wheat' warning, if you prefer to avoid those foods. more complicated things made from beans, you must ALWAYS read the label. but I think that relying on 'gluten free' on the label...
  9. I just remind myself that I want it, but I can't have it. Doesn't mean I want it any less, just means I don't have it. That's really about it. To borrow an analogy (a bit racy though it may be), it's kinda like sex. You can have the drive/desire/urge to have sex with your significant other, but if they're not in the mood, you don't do it. You may find...
  10. they have some 'energy bars' that I found to be alright, but they put way too much rice bran in their granola for it to be tasty!
  11. I think you've got an impossibly high standard for 'normal'. By what I'm reading from you, asthmatics can't be normal. Diabetics can't be normal. Those with flat feet can't even be normal. Or those who have to wear corrective lenses can't ever be normal. Never mind the other myriad of conditions/diseases/differences among people. The world is too varied...
  12. I'm the celiac, my husband isn't. He still has some gluteny stuff at home, but also eats gluten-free stuff with me. (I do most of the cooking, and I cook naturally gluten-free anyway. He doesn't generally eat the specialty gluten-free products I occasionally buy.) But he's a fairly picky eater, and the stuff he eats around me aren't the ones I am most...
  13. My understanding is that what you describe there - prostate problems - cause cause impotency itself. the thing is, he needs to deal with this. I know a lot of men don't want to discuss sex problems, but it's not really optional. that said, whom he most needs to talk with (right now) is his doctor. I have not seen any medical research that suggestions...
  14. packing your own lunch is MUCH easier if you make sure to make enough *dinner* the night before that you can take leftovers - even if it's just part of the meal as leftovers combined with something else.
  15. beef jerkey (homemade, some Oberto or Tillamook flavors) dried fruit nuts quick cooking hot cereal like quinoa flakes or rice bran (if you'll have access to boiling water) energy bars (Ruth's hemp bars, Clif nectar bars, Lara Bars, etc.) tuna Just Veggies :-)
  16. I prefer oven-baked, mixed with a bit of olive oil and kosher salt. Either sweet potatoes or creamy potatoes, but never starchy potatoes like russets. :-P
  17. I've always packed a lunch, and found that it offered me a much wider set of options than going out. Not to mention it didn't take as much time out of my day.
  18. it may make a bit of a difference, but I don't think it would ruin the recipe. brown rice flour can be a bit grittier. if it called for *sweet* rice flour, that would be different, and you could make the sub, but it wouldn't go quite as well.
  19. Actually, there's a lentil pasta out there if you can find it. I didn't much like it, though. Tinkyada pasta is usually made with rice bran, and the corn and quinoa ones also have a higher protein/fiber content than regular pasta anyway.
  20. vodka and gatorade. ;-) I know, sounds cheap, but not when you use the good vodka. another favorite is hot chocolate (or cold chocolate 'milk') with rumpleminze, or hot cider (or cold apple juice) with goldschlager. ;-)
  21. Yep, it's the only thing I've used for about seven years now. It does work for 24 hours for me - as they advertise, and I find that in the summer, I just dress more appropriately for the weather. I may sweat a bit, but usually not inside, and if I wear appropriate clothing, it's not really noticeable. (Of course, I lived in Southern California.) If I...
  22. I am a big fan of the rock - the crystal deoderant. It doesn't stop you from sweating, but puts a layer of alum (not aluminun) on the skin that prevents bacterial growth that causes the icky smell. It's effective, and the darn thing lasts *forever*!
  23. avocados? peanut butter? meats? coconut?
  24. Lactose is a complex sugar, made up of two other sugar molecules, that is unique to mammalian milk. The body needs to produce an enzyme, lactase, to break it into it's two components so that the body can use it to make energy. If it doesn't get broken down by your body, it moves on through the digestive tract and is metabolized by bacteria in your intestines...
  25. That's the big problem though - the starters have dairy. Someone posted a link to a starter without dairy for me a few months ago - with some patience and a good search, you might be able to find it.
