  1. If it's an antihistamine, it could block food allergies. Not the celiac reaction, of course, as that's not an allergic reaction, but other food allergies, yes, to an extent. (Though it's not really *masking*, since the symptoms are caused by the histamine, and the drug is either preventing the release of histamine or "sopping it up", so it's actually *preventing...

    ARCHIVED Wary...

Enterolab is a fascinating case, really. Dr. Fine has not yet published any peer reviewed studies (though I've heard he's working on it - since I first heard that a year ago, I'd expect it to be relatively soon, in the next year or so), but there is independent research from Italy supporting the fecal testing concept. (That's the not same as supporting...
  3. It may be time to get very creative about substitutions, and be willing to change your tastes a bit. But there have been a lot of people on th board who've listed brownie mixes that they like a lot. One thing to consider, with brownies, is exactly what it is you're looking for and what you're making. I'm a very chocolaty, moist brownie fan, so the raw...
  4. My challenge wasn't that long (it was just dietary, not for a biopsy), but still took about two weeks for me. It may take him a bit longer, or shorter, depending on his system.
  5. One thing to consider here is that, if she was diagnosed very recently, they may be very overwhelmed with the diet and so it's a bigger deal to them. The only cure for this is patience. Talking to them will help as well, if you approach it from the perspective of asking them to teach you, so they feel that they have more input to how you deal with it. ...
  6. This is the best place I know to get information - this message board at the associated text pages on celiac.com. Read through whatever you have time to, and do feel free to ask plenty of questions. Those of us doing the gluten-free diet really need the support and understanding of our family members and friends, and if you need more information to support...
  7. It sounds to me, from your post, that your expectations for yourself were too high. You are human - human failings, human emotions, human limitations, and human reactions. Sometimes, when looking back on our past behavior, we do react just that way, "How could I have done that?!". But it's important to follow up on that question, in an introspective manner...
  8. Oh yes, definitely make your own. I tend to do rice stuffing, using a mix of brown and wild rice, with the traditional fixings of onions, celery, and mushrooms. (I often add carrots too.) The spices are key as well, and I tend to favor the sage. (I would also add plenty of salt, but Thanksgivings are low-fat (or has low fat options of everything), low...
  9. Neither link had evidence supporting a physical reason - aside from contamination - why pure distilled grain alchohol would have gluten in them. I think it's important to note that comparing the results on one type of brandy to what is used for flavor extracts isn't necessarily a fair comparison. But, I totally agree that if that is what works for a person...
  10. Congratulations!!!
  11. Yep, and it's fairly common. There's a pretty big artery there.
  12. I'm not disputing you get sick from these products, but I'm disputing "will not break off during this process". Distillation isn't about "breaking things off". If you read up on the process, you'll find that it involves the evaporation of various molecules out of a liquid substance. Evaporation depends upon many things, one of which is partical weight...
  13. nope, the names are mostly coincidence. well, sort of - the inheritance goes the other way. glutamate, like glutamine, is an amino acid. gliandin and the othe gluten proteins are made up of amino acids, but it is the particular sequencing of amino acids that makes gliandin toxic to us. (ironically, it appears to be the frequency of proline, not glutamate...
  14. I agree, the people you seem to have been dealing with are being rude and unaccomodating. There may be an improved approach you can take, but for the most part, it's a simple concept. Pointing out the discrimination these people are showing against your daughter *may* help them realize what they are really saying, but it might not.
  15. I'm not sure what part of the country you're in, but in SoCal, I could get it at Mother's Market or WildOats.
  16. Nope, I don't get much change. Some bloating, but if it's a single incident, not too much.
  17. How hard it is depends on how adaptable you and he are willing to be. If you want virtually no change from your current lifestyle, then it can be hard. If you don't mind adapting to a fairly large difference, it isn't hard once you get the hang of it. Eating out will never be a simple thing. Having a constant vigilance over ingredients and cross-contamination...
  18. short grain brown rice may also be an option. or wild rice.
  19. It could be a migraine. (They are often one sided, don't always have a warning, and are often accompanied by nausea.) I was recently DX'ed as having migraines (not often, thankfully), and my doctor noted that *many* of the headaches people have actually are migraines, but they don't realize it. (The main characteristic being the blood vessels in the brain...
  20. google tamiflu and you should get a lot of information. i don't know the full extent of the side effects, but i do know you have to take it immediately (within 24 hours of symptom onset, as i recal) for it to really be effective and worthwhile.
  21. If it's a true casein intolerance, it's because you don't produce the enzyme to break down that protein, and no, that doesn't change. Some people may find they don't do well with the protein for other reasons that may change, so perhaps you'll do better with it after your gut fully heals. Whether goats/sheeps milk will work better for you or not depends...
  22. I wish too. I'm a bug magnet. And I get those nasty reactions.
  23. Any raw meat product that has any additives with nutritional value (which wheat is considered to provide) must be labeled, according to USDA regulations. If the stock contains gluten, it must say so on the package labeling. Labeling is allowed to use the word "spices" in broth ingredients on raw meat, but this particular use of the word spices includes...
  24. I think the solution depends on where his difficulty stems from. Has he clearly articulated to you what his trouble is with dealing with the diet? (I too can't see the original post, so perhaps you already stated it...)
  25. An easy way to explain it is to say "It's not an allergy - that's one type of immune response. It's an intolerance, which is a different type of immune response. This one happens to be an autoimmune response, which means that consuming gluten will cause the body to damage itself. That doesn't happen in an allergic response."
