  1. Not too much, but I do wonder - so, do any of these actors have food intolerances or something like that so what we *think* they're eating isn't *really* what they're eating? (Like a vegetarian actor looking like they're eating a hamburger, with a cleverly disguised veggie patty in the bun. Or a wheat allergic actor with a non-wheat bun!)
  2. The dietary challenge IS a test, so you already have done additional testing. It is a VALID test, so the question is if it's *enough* testing for you. I didn't go with a biopsy, and even had inconclusive blood results, but decided the dietary results were enough for me.
  3. The VAST majority of what I eat is naturally gluten-free stuff, not packaged products (hence, no brands). But, because I cook, I don't find it too limiting. Or, if I'm finding it limiting, it just means it's time to go pick up a new cookbook or a new recipe or two. You can make almost anything you want - what are you finding your limitations to be and...
  4. Yep, they are healthy. White, green, and black teas are all made from the same plant; the difference lies in the processing. White is processed the least, and includes some of the flower buds from the plant, green is dried, and black is cured before drying. Hence, black tea has the fewest antioxidants of the three, but still has quite a lot. An interesting...
  5. The first step here should be a letter from your doctor. The second should involve a lawyer. I realize it's a family thing, but they need to understand that in a company that size, they have legal obligations regardless of family status.
  6. If someone told you that something you do every day, something you take for granted, something that is a very normal part of your world, will kill them if they ever have it again, you might find it hard to believe too. You don't, in this case, because you have some experience with what happens to you if you eat wheat, but it is a non-trivial concept for...
  7. 1. What kind of frying pans do people recommend? I had a Calphalon that got scratched and my hubby cooked pot stickers in it, washed it and i still got some gluten in me. I bought a new Cuisinart stainless steel one. What does everyone recommend? I use a Calphalon hard anodized 12" skillet most of the time. I don't like using non-stick surfaces. The LA...
  8. In practice, I usually have meat every day - in with my dinner. Sometimes that will translate into leftovers for lunch, depending on if there are leftovers. But meat usually doesn't make the main portion of my meal - it's the shrimp in a stir-fry full of vegetables, or the ground turkey in a chili full of beans and tomatoes, the beef in a stew full of other...
  9. I've used canned crab meat just fine in sushi. Real crab has a lighter taste, so it is a bit different, but I actually prefer it, not to mention I've *never* found a gluten-free imitation crab.
  10. Pure buckwheat flour (not in a mix with other flours that do contain gluten) is safe. (Technically, buckwheat is a fruit.)
  11. In the US, if it says "vinegar" on the label, it is distilled vinegar.
  12. CoQ10 is supposed to be helpful for energy. I'm taking it - on the recommendation of my doctor - as a migraine preventative, but think it's made an energy difference as well. (I take it along with my regular calcium/magnesium/vitD, B-50, and multi.)
  13. No kidding on the dangerous exploding glass! (I posted a story about my experience with it last month. As of yesterday, I was still finding glass around the apartment! (The piece in the bed covers worried me most - and no, the beer never went in the bedroom.) I tried drinking the last bottle I had at my house cooling party (after wrapping it in towels...
  14. Depends on what your other food issues are. I've thought about going vegetarian, but I can't have dairy at all and don't deal well with soy every day. Add to that the fact that I get hypoglycemic tendencies and need about 30% of my calories to be from protein (I think if I ate nothing but lentils and high-protein beans, I'd get enough protein), and that...
  15. I think that, while it may be unpleasant, a single blood draw shouldn't be a huge problem for a 5 year old. Getting that test *can* be helpful, and you can try the elimination diet after the blood test regardless of the results. It will be easier for your doctors (her doctors) to take you more seriously. The tests do have false negatives, but they're not...
  16. It's kinda funny... if you read over the posts about things here, you'll see that there isn't always a consensus on things. A lot of people like one thing, but a good number of people won't like the same item, so - unfortunately - you're stuck with a fair amount of trying things sometimes. But I don't know of a place (other than randomly here) to do that...
  17. I didn't see it mentioned, but don't forget flashlights and a battery powered radio to be able to hear the important news warnings. :-)
  18. The problem with that theory is that an intolerance could be an early sign of celiac, before sufficient damage has been done to the intestines to show up as "celiac". So cheating, even if it's "just an intolerance" at this point, could lead to larger problems in the future. Perhaps keep her gluten-free until after the move, and then try the challenge later...
  19. If he's iron-deficient anemic, then a multi-vit with iron is a good idea, or making sure he drinks orange juice or something else with vit C with meat or eggs. He shouldn't need flouride in his multi-vit, particularly if you live in an area where your water is flouridated, so I wouldn't worry about that. There are a lot of vitamins (without colors and additives...
  20. Between the urinary and bowel urgency, I might suggest talking to your doctor about pelvic floor issues. Pelvic floor exercises help many women with bowel incontinence, as well as the urinary incontinence. (It's the same muscle that runs along the urethra and anus, but different sections of it can be weaker, so you don't always get both incontinences, but...
  21. Some of us do not have "formal" diagnoses, but we know that gluten-free makes us feel better. If your body has told you that it works better without gluten, you're doing the right thing listening to it! The physical reaction and your quality of life is a valid diagnostic test in determining whether or not you're gluten intolerant. And there is growing...
  22. Not me, on the regular ones, anyway, but it does seem that almost every flavored chip I want to try has whey in it! ;-) I enjoy the Natural Ruffles, though I'm not a big potato chip fan, and they are fairly salty.
  23. Regardless of the tTg, EMA, and biopsy results, the fact that you have elevated anti-gliandin antibodies means that your body is immunologically reacting to gluten, so the right thing to do is maintain a gluten free diet. If the damage wasn't severe enough (some doctors require completely flattened villi, not merely damaged) or if enough samples were not...
  24. Lol! You haven't seen my crappy non-stick pan! ;-) Next to impossible to verify everything's out of those scratches. But I'd agree that items that are in good shape shouldn't be a problem.
  25. They're still pretty early in this. I'd expect a minimum of another five years of testing, perhaps 10 before it reaches market. They're only testing safety right now, so we won't get any numbers on effectiveness until the next set of testing that's done.
