  1. It's hops - which is a different plant. My guess would be that it is safe, based on the fact that it does not appear to be closely related to wheat, barley, or rye.   5. Well, that's not the full panel. They didn't do the anti-gliandin IgG or IgA. As for the "test not done" bit - I think all that's saying is that because it was negative, they didn't to the test that would give you a number.

  8. There isn't a yes/no answer on this one. As the seed sprouts and grows a blade of grass, the protein in the plant is used up in the metabolic process. When does all the protein get used up? Who knows? That's why I avoid grasses and sprouts from the offending grains.

  10. You might try Bragg's. It's not soy sauce, but very similar. You'll have to check on whether or not any corn is used in the processing, but I don't think there is.

  12. I always make my own - I like extra pineapple in it, and it's not hard to make, bottle, and keep a bunch in the fridge for future use. (I posted the recipe I use a while back in my big long list of recipes, I think.)
  13. A not uncommon, but very problematic misconception. The sprouted grain still contains the protein that bothers us. In theory, if grown long enough, the grass that forms from such a sprout might have no gluten, but they're not using the grass, they're using the sprout, and it's got the protein.
  14. You should have your own items, not just replacing the current ones if there's going to be shared use with gluten-containing foods. I wouldn't necessarily do that with stainless steel or aluminum pans or ceramic bakeware, but any wooden items, or non-stick surfaces that are not PRISTINE, you should have your own set of.
  15. Without the full celiac panel, it's really hard to conclude anything from that. Assume the IgA and IgG you put down were anti-gliandin IgA and IgG, you also need a total IgA, a tTg, and EMA. And, regardless of those results, given the symptoms and the family history, I would also suggest trying the diet - strictly - for three months as a further diagnostic...
  16. If you really like raisin bran, go with it. I didn't mean to sound like it wasn't an option, I just put the shredded wheat down because of the protein content. Have a bit bigger of a bowl of raisin bran for breakfast or ah extra bowl for dessert. If it's going to cause symptoms, at least you can enjoy what you're eating in taste. :-)
  17. It is! Gluten is the term for plant proteins. Gliandin is the particular gluten (or protein) that is in wheat that bothers celiacs.

You don't know if maybe this is a minor little thing that is transient that hasn't really had a significant effect on your body; you know that you certainly have a serious case of celiac disease and that you must go gluten-free for life and have a lot of intestinal damage to be repaired as you heal.   19. I used Kellog's varieties for this comparison, but I believe it hold true in general: Raisin Bran has only half the protein that Shredded Wheat does. It's that protein that you want to load up on, so you want to maximize that. Heck, cream of wheat with wheat bran added would be even better, but not necessarily as tasty. :-)

  21. How about a bowl of shredded wheat in the morning (or Raisin Bran :-) ), and a bagel during the day? Bagels aren't as crumbly or messy as bread, but good ones are made with plenty of gluten.

For a small child, an adult size bowl would be certainly enough, but a small child's bowl, maybe not (I'm not sure how big they really are).   23. I'd think it'd be time to get a grain mill and mill your own flours from whole items you can wash. (For instance, mill your own rice, beans, millet, amaranth, quinoa, and tapioca.   25. My understanding is that if nutritional problems causing short stature are caught early, there is a very good chance the effect can be corrected. No guarantees, and no promises on it happening quickly, but he's got more than a decade of growing ahead of him to catch up.
