If you are celiac, you really do need to eat gluten free. The fact that you were not may have contributed to it taking a year to get pregnant, as untreated celiac disease is linked to infertility and miscarriage. If you have celiac, regardless of what you *feel* in your body, damage is done every time you consume gluten, and it make take a decade or two...

ARCHIVED Emergency! I Ned Peanut Butter Cookie Recipe!
tarnalberry replied to loco-ladi's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yes, yes, it's a snarky response, but it just seemed to fit the post so well, I couldn't help myself. I mean this in a purely joking way, nothing else - the site makes is sound snarkier than need be. Open Original Shared Link I hope that whatever recipe you use comes out well! -
It's not necessarily as simple as "treat it with the gluten free diet". The point of the article is there is another antibody produced, not against gliadin, or the intestines, but against a bone building protein naturally in the body. It is not at all clear from the article if this 'new' antibody is produced only when a celiac consumes gluten, or if it...

ARCHIVED Blood Results All Normal Except Fasting Blood Sugar
tarnalberry replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, there are no celiac disease blood tests in there. It's good that other things are normal, but if you were expecting celiac testing, it's not there. -
ARCHIVED Negative Diagnosis, And I'm Still In Pain
tarnalberry replied to Sandi*'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This. It appears as though *something* is bothering you. Maybe it's gluten, or dairy, or soy, or some combination, or none of those and something else entirely. You had a period where things were better, so try to replicate that diet, and then keep track of how things affect you as you add them back in slowly. Keep in mind that stress can also have... -
ARCHIVED Osteopenia And gluten-free Calcium Supplements?
tarnalberry replied to hhdavid's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, you need magnesium - ideally a 2:1 Cal:Mag ratio. (Getting 1000-2000IU vit D3 is a good idea as well, particularly as we head into winter (assuming you're in the northern hemisphere.) I take Rainbow Lights Food-Based Calcium, which has 500mg Ca, 250mg Mg, and 100IU D3 (I take an additional supplement for the rest). (It also contains glutamic acid... -
my blood tests were 'inconclusive' (most doctors would have read them as negative), but I had been gluten free for two weeks. I never did an endoscopy. I did a 'gluten challenge' - I ate a large amount of gluten after having been gluten free. felt awful. the bloating, bourbourygmi (gurgling noises going through the intestines - turns out it's not normal...

ARCHIVED With Muscle Comes Gut, Apparently
tarnalberry replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
another possibility is that the exercises you are doing to increase muscle mass in the abdominal area are being done incorrectly. if done incorrectly, you can strengthen only some muscles, and not others (the rectus abdominus is often 'left out'), and that can itself lead to a somewhat 'bulgy' appearance as muscle development is uneven, and not balanced... -
ARCHIVED How Much Gluten Needs To Be In System For Test?
tarnalberry replied to KahleFamily's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
to get a reasonable chance at a positive test, you need to be eating the equivalent of three slices of bread a day for three months. I personally have not had to prove that I have celiac disease. But I am not in school where food may be provided for me. I also will "fire" a medical provider if they're not willing to understand that I feel better without... -
you could also use corn thins (like rice cakes, but made out of corn) or even apples. (apples and peanut butter are a very common snack around our house!) leftovers for breakfast are *great*! I will probably have leftover mediterranean lentil soup for breakfast. one other thing - you can get hot cereals, and make them at work if you have a microwave...

ARCHIVED Is Astepro Safe?
tarnalberry replied to jlbroyles23's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I had no problems with it when I used it, but I'm glad the company got back to you! -
ARCHIVED Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte
tarnalberry replied to haleym's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is gluten free, but they have ingredients which go into the frappe (some blended beverage) which isn't. If you're particularly sensitive to cross-contamination, you may want to ask (during a not-too-busy time) that they wash the implements that they're using for you, as they usually just rinse between beverages. BTW, for everyone who's frustrated at... -
That's a really good point. You might also discuss the possibility of reactive hypoglycemia (which a fasting blood sugar, and just about any test that isn't measuring blood sugar over time (many hours) when challenged with sugar, won't be able to catch). (In theory, a personal blood glucose monitor can't "diagnose" it either, but you can chart a profile...

ARCHIVED Thermos For Lunch
tarnalberry replied to Leah'sMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
expensive, and no cool graphics, but I hear *fabulous* things about this thermos. (I got a cheaper, REI brand one, and it works fine for tea for a few hours outside in 30-40F weather.) -
I wouldn't say that you're fine after eating oatmeal. You generally eat it in the morning, eat other foods, and then get quite tired. You cannot rule out oats from causing the problem. Oh, yes, it could certainly be something else, but it could also still be a delayed reaction to oats. Can you keep a food diary, try to rotate through foods and not...

Assuming your vitamin levels are good (which they may not be, and it's worth trying to get those tested), you may want to experiment with simplifying you food so that there are only a few ingredients, and you don't eat a very big meal. (You may have to eat many small ones, which I know is a pain in the butt, but might help.) Does this tend to occur more...

I vary between a number of things, and here are a few: * rice cakes with peanut butter - these are portable/briefly storable if you wrap them in saran wrap and stick 'em in the fridge * fruit and hard boiled eggs (make a half dozen on the weekend and you're good for three breakfasts) * coconut milk yogurt (soy is an option if you can have it) with a generous...

ARCHIVED Eight Months Gluten Free And Still Issues?
tarnalberry replied to tfrankenberger's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Is he still drinking milk? Lots of gas is a primary sign of lactose intolerance. -
ARCHIVED New Celiac And Have To Travel!
tarnalberry replied to Frances03's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Find out where the grocery stores are, and buy things that may not need cooking (or only in a microwave bowl) if/when you have microwave access. Sure, you might be eating coldcuts on corn tortillas warmed in the microwave with tomatoes and lettuce for a dinner sandwhich, but it's food! (And if you add a little avocado, or hummus, it's not half bad. ) ... -
ARCHIVED Eating Out With A gluten-free Kid - Help
tarnalberry replied to Benshell's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
find the phone numbers to some restaurants that you guys (the adults) might want to eat at and then call them, and ask what sort of things could be put together for a gluten-free kid. call during an off time - like when they first open, or some other non-rush time - and ask to speak to the manager. depending on what is around, there may be a number of... -
ARCHIVED Pregnancy And The Unavoidable Stomach Issues
tarnalberry replied to NicoleAJ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
smaller, more frequent meals. (yeah, I'm also getting tired of trying to find 200-calorie "meals" that I can eat every two hours.) keep up with plenty of fiber from fruits, vegetables, and legumes. get *lots* of water and whatever exercise you can. and when you feel the urge for a bowel movement, don't wait - find a restroom and give yourself time to... -
ARCHIVED It's Decided, I Don't Need A Dx To Go Gluten Free
tarnalberry replied to homemaker's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
what jestgar said! we learn from our own empiric evidence every day. and we use it. this is no different. (for the record, I had 'inconclusive' blood results, no endoscopy, and positive dietary results. I have been strictly gluten free - baring a few accidents - for over six years.) -
ARCHIVED France Trip A Disaster
tarnalberry replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
quitting your current job in no way means defeat if you're going to a job that is better for you. no one said you'd have to go back to an office job if you stop the job you're currently in. there are *all kinds* of options that are not office jobs. even sales/marketing jobs vary, and not all of them require travel. if it's the travel that makes you like... -
ARCHIVED France Trip A Disaster
tarnalberry replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You might consider not pharmaceuticals, but rather working with a therapist who can help you learn and develop coping skills. Based on my own experiences and what I've heard from others, I honestly think that part of your difficulty with the diet (especially during travel) is how you are approaching it. While I could say "you have to do your research ahead... -
ARCHIVED Joint Clicking?
tarnalberry replied to Lilymylove's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Is it really primarily during yoga or other times when the joints are at a wide range of motion, or is it also when just walking at a normal pace and sitting/standing? "Clicking" is a kind of generic term, and three things come to mind: 1) joint popping, where small bubbles of gas build up in the joints and get compressed and pop (like "cracking your...
