  1. Now what the heck is that supposed to mean? For somebody who is so set on not straying from the subject of Celiac disease, you have reeeeaaaaaaaallly come far. This is an awful lot worse than talking about an 'evil ex-wife'. And it sure sounds like you would like Stef to encounter this kind of fight and lose. I don't like it at all. Spoken by another...
  2. I agree that more women than men get diagnosed because many guys either think they have to 'tough it out', or simply won't go see a doctor. I am pretty sure that propably four out of my six brothers are celiacs, too (and the other two have complaints that aren't so obvious, like one of them will put on weight just by LOOKING at something starchy, it seems...
  3. I would take casein out of her diet and see what happens. That could definitely be the problem.
  4. Wow, that cruise sounds awsome! My husband and I are going on a Caribbean cruise (four days) next week Thursday (Jan. 26th). I am intolerant to so many things, that my menu is quite small. Our travel agent has been in contact with the cruise line (he works for them) and sent them the list of things I can and can't have (the can't have section much bigger...
  5. I hear you when it comes to wheelchairs. I broke my right ankle almost four years ago (Apr. 11th, 2002), and it took a very long time to heal. It is still not fine, and never will be. The combination of that ankle and the fibromyalgia was so bad, that I didn't go to a mall until just recently, because I simply couldn't walk far enough. I have a handicapped...
  6. Well, I also had fibromyalgia (with brain fog, aching all over, but especially in my hands, feet, back and knees, a constant headache), alternating constipation and diarrhea, occasional severe stomach and bowel cramps, rashes, hives, mood swings, swollen ankles in the evening, swollen hands in the morning. I also have a lot of environmental allergies (tobacco...
  7. My hands and ankles have been swollen for years. My hands would be swollen in the morning, and my ankles would swell terribly over the course of the day. With the gluten free diet, my ankles are never swollen any more (I hope that they won't in the summer either, I can't tolerate heat and humidity at all). And my hands are rarely swollen and painful any...
  8. Hi Lucy, Since your son was well before vomiting, and is fine now, I doubt that he has the flu. And yes, after being gluten free for several months, he may now be reacting to offending foods, even if he didn't before going on the diet. My chiropractor says that vomiting is not a sign of illness, but of wellness, because if the stomach immediately rejects...
  9. I used to have terrible reflux, and I have a hiatal hernia as well, and ten year ago had an ulcer in the esophagus as a result. At the time I also had gall stones. After getting my gallbladder out, and cutting down on tomatoes and just drinking water (no juices) things were much better. And after going off gluten and everything else I am intolerant to, I...
  10. Right, Rusla, doctors would tell me that my back problems would get better if I'd only lose weight! I then explained to them that I had the same back problems since I've been seven years old, and that they were the worst when I was so thin that you could blow right through me. My back pain started getting better the day after I stopped eating gluten,...
  11. I agree with the oats issue, you'll have to find something else for her to eat for breakfast. It will take more than three months to get her iron up. Is she taking supplements? The gain will be very slow without supplementing with iron. There are some great liquid formulas that taste great (in health food stores, not pharmacies).
  12. MSFL, try a homeopathic remedy called Sepia (you find it in the health food store), it will hopefully calm your stomach. Eating only bananas is a bad idea. Try some white rice and applesauce instead. Drink some chamomile tea, it also helps to calm the stomach. Do you understand about gluten, that you can't have ANY at all (that means no wheat, rye, barley...
  13. Thanks for the pics, Nisla! It really gives me hope to see what happened to you, just going off gluten. Rusla, you must have been feeling terrible about yourself! I am so glad you've started losing too, and fast as well. I was gaining more and more, and as a result was treated with contempt by some of my adult children and my husband. That was the worst...
  14. The nightshades are potatoes, tomatoes, peppers (all kinds, including chili peppers and paprika) and eggplant. And the reaction was not likely the pasta (unless it wasn't gluten-free), but the tomato sauce. Or you might be intolerant to the combination of meat and tomato, like one of my daughters (she is also intolerant to the combination of meat and potato...
  15. Carole, potatoes will cause (within 24 hours usually) bowel cramps, bloating, gas and diarrhea (actually, they will cause a reaction similar to being glutened in me). Tomatoes cause awful migraines. I haven't eaten potatoes in four years (well, with the occasional exception, knowing what to expect ). And of course, they used to be my favourite food...
  16. Wow, Nisla, that's 100 lb you lost! Amazing. I am 5'6", but still, 238 lb was a lot. I am now down to 217, still a long way to go. But I lost what I did also without even trying. Now that I am done with all the testing, which set me back and I stopped losing weight, I should be losing again. I would so like to be able to wear a bathing suit again! For...
  17. I'm sorry about the cyst, but glad you had it checked out and its not appendicitis. Keep us posted on what will be done. All the best
  18. I used to be as skinny as a stick as a kid and couldn't gain any weight at all. Then when I got pregnant with my first child in 1979, I gained 45 pounds (despite eating very healthy and not very much), and was unable to lose the excess. The same happened with the other four kids (and the eight miscarriages) and when breastfeeding. I tried every diet imaginable...
  19. I found out that when I weeded out all products with wheat germ oil my scalp stopped itching (the shampoo had it), and my eyes wouldn't burn any more (my hand soap had it, and I'd touch my eyes). I am part of a German Celiac forum (I rarely go there now), and they drive me nuts. Somebody was saying they're so careful with their food, and is not getting...
  20. I agree, go to the hospital emergency right now. If you can't drive yourself, call the hospital and ask them what they think, if they think it's serious, they might send an ambulance. Or you might get a friend to drive you. But do go.
  21. Mary, you will find broth (vegetable or herbal based broth) in the health food store. But even they can contain gluten, so you absolutely must, at all times, read the labels! When I went I found ONE out of four had no gluten (and now I can't even use that one any more, because of salicylates). I never go to the grocery store without reading glasses any...
  22. Patti, I use (and may have to modify that) a mix of buckwheat flour, tapioca flour, arrowroot flour and ground hazelnuts (you can use ground almonds, but they are high in salicylates and out for me). I find that makes a nice flour. I don't know if you can bake cake with that. But I use it to make crumbs (with lard and maple syrup) to make a nice apple crisp...
  23. What you are saying makes perfect sense to me. As the saying goes, "One person's food is another person's poison", and it's very true. When I think of it, the foods I am now left with are basically the ones that have always been available in the part of the world I am from (Hamburg, Germany, which is near the northernmost part of Germany). No grains...
  24. I've had terrible nightmares all my life, there have been times when being under extreme stress that I'd have ten nightmares a night, and would be afraid of going to bed. When I came off gluten, lectins and salicylates (everything I'm intolerant to), those nightmares stopped completely. When I tested for those intolerances this past week, I started having...
  25. Okay, I am done being a guinea pig, I am now sure of all my intolerances (at least I hope that's all, or I won't have anything left I can eat). Yesterday I decided to test the salicylates. I took Aspirin, and, for good measure (and because it might be my last chance to eat those things) ate honey, a peppermint candy, a clementine orange, some grapes and...
