  1. If you like Angry Orchard, you should check out Strongbow Cider it is also great stuff.
  2. I just avoid McDonald's all together. I've had reactions to things there that are supposed to be gluten free.
  3. I have texture issues when it comes to food and that stuff is on my "yucky" list.
  4. I don't know much about Japan but I know that Celiac is much less common there so not as much care in labeling for such might be a problem. As stated above, you cannot have "just a little bit" of gluten if you have Celiac Disease. No more soy sauce or eating things you are not sure about.
  5. You'd be surprised how many places are open to letting you show them the best way. Sometimes if you do the research and are willing to show them, the managers can be pretty receptive. My experience is that most of these places are willing to do things the right way, particularly if you make it easy for them by telling them how to do it. I have found...
  6. This really depends on the location. Not all of them are owned by the same people. Also, they only have 2-3 meat ingredients that are gluten free. I actually went into the one by my house and taught them how to make a safe, gluten free pizza. Showed them how to use a separate work station, spoons, scoops and ingredients. I set them up with a tray that...
  7. Yeah, it's a common misconception with newly diagnosed folks. Unfortunately it can take a couple of years to fully recover and if you are like me the symptoms actually got worse for a couple of months while on a gluten-free diet. We just have to remember that the disease is a result of an immune response and they don't go away immediately when the antigen...
  8. Anti Gliadin testing was good for it's day when there were no other tests but it was only about 80% sensative, so 20% of celiacs would come up negative. I would probably ask to have a TTG and DGP tests done, if you are positive on either of those you almost certainly have celiac disease.
  9. I know when I was fulltime glutened I couldn't remember much to begin with, so probably a good idea.
  10. Very well could be Celiac or could be a food allergy of some sort. Make sure to ask you Dr. to order the right labs, most GPs are not that familiar with Celiac disease and the appropriate labs: The best tests out there right now are Tissue Transglutaminase Antibodies (IGA): TTG IGA is the most accepted first line screening tesst for Celiac,...
  11. Well, it all depends on how comfortable you are with medical terminology and if you think you will be able remember to ask the questions you have. You really have to be your own advocate, so if you think you can do that and are comfortable going by yourself that is just fine. As far as the amount of blood, it depends on what your Dr. orders. They might...
  12. Yeah, I fractured my back years ago without knowing how I did it. Went to the Dr. with a backache and did x-rays and I had three compression fractures between my shoulder blades. Then I found out I have scheuerman's diease, now I find out I have celiac disease and it all makes sense. Scheuerman's can weaken the spine and I probably have been low in calcium...
  13. Thanks! My Dr. was surprised my labs went down so low, so fast. He said a lot of people take a good year to get to that point. Probably helps that I have pretty much been eating mostly lean meat, fruits and veggies and limiting packaged foods and rarely eating out.
  14. I would talk to your parents and get an appointment with your doctor. Be sure to ask for celiac testing: Make sure you get a TTG IgA, Deaminated Gliadin IgG & IgA at the minimum. The deaminated tests are the best. My TTG was borderline positive, the Deaminated tests were 3x higher than the upper limit for positive. If those come up positive you...
  15. I have found that since I've been gluten free for 6 months that I'm actually more sensative to gluten than I was while eating bread like crazy. I used to be a two sandwich a day type of guy+ the other gluten containing things. Now if I get glutened I get worse diarrhea and other symptoms than I had while fully glutened. Sort of the body saying, "WHY!...
  16. I think it is good to keep a journal so you can pin point possible problems. However, I will also point out that it is not uncommon to continue to have symptoms or even new symptoms early on in recovery. I was having worse/new symptoms two months after going gluten-free. Even after going through the diet with a comb to find anything with gluten in it I came...
  17. Just had my appointment today, 6 months or since I was diagnosed. Labs before DX: Deaminated Gliadin IGA 73 Range= 0-19 Deaminated Gliadin IGG 42 Range= 0-19 TTG IgA 8 Range 0-3 Labs now: Deaminated Gliadin IGA 11 Range= 0-19 Deaminated Gliadin IGG 5 Range= 0-19 TTG IgA <2 Range 0-3 Vitamin D went from...
  18. Given that he was cutting back on gluten for a long time before the test then only eating lightly glutened for only 8 weeks I would certainly push for the EGD given the positive test. He will need to continue eating gluten until he has the EGD. My tTG test was very weak positive, but my my EGD was 2nd highest grade (bad) as you can get.
  19. I work in medical coding so terminology is something I'm good at and I also happen to code pathology reports a lot as well. From what you posted it seems they are using unusual terminology for this sort of biopsy. Essentially, they are trying to say there is a minimal amount of crypt hperplasia and low grade villous atrophy. To break it down further...
  20. Yes, not having a gallbladder can compound that problem. In any case, my GI doc says that it should improve over time, I just have the double whammy of having Celiac Disease and no gallbladder, both things that can make processing fat difficult.
  21. You should have a biopsy done. There is no such thing as a weak positive, if your result says positive at all you have a strong chance (95%+) of having celiac disease. Also, was he still eating gluten when tested?
  22. Yeah, I have found that I do not handle fatty things very well just yet. If I eat something high in fat I get pain, bloating, gas and diarrhea. Some celiacs just don't process fat well for quite sometime after going gluten-free, hopefully it will improve over time.
  23. At first it really seems hard becuase you have to change your whole way of thinking when you go to the store. After a while you get a core group of foods like like that are gluten-free, just like before you had a core number of foods that you bought regularly. Eventually you will get more comfortable with shopping and expand your shopping list from a relatively...
  24. I have been glutened a few times since I was DX'd, one time I got diarrhea the other time nothing and the one that I didn't have a reaction to had a lot more gluten in it.
  25. Could be Celiac or it could be any number of other issues that have similar symptoms. When the tests come back you should have a little more to go on.
