  1. The Edmonton Celiac Association website has almost no information compared to any other city. I'm really dissapointed.

I used to eat at Sicilian all the time before going Gluten-Free so I might have to pop back there sometime. I really like Sorrentino's though and have been successful in going there. I hope you get your courage to venture out and eat out. All the restaurants that I listed have been good. I haven't been glutened yet. I don't eat out a ton but more than you do. I think I mentioned somewhere else you responded to that the Outback on Calgary Trail is safe too. I don't know when the pizza restaurant that I wrote about starts the gluten-free pizza's but I'll let you know when they do.

Also, I've been meaning to post about the Strathcona Farmer's market. There's a lady there that makes a ton of gluten-free products. Bread, Pies, Meat Pies, Tortiere's, Muffins, Lasagna, and the like. I eat a lot of her stuff. Cinnamon buns too! The place is called Lipsmacker's. My mom told me today that she now has perogies. I've been making my own but I'll try some of these out soon. Keep me posted if you find any other secrets in the city and I'll do the same.

I had Swiss Chalet last night too, it was yummy. First time in 4 years! I'm sorry Carriefaith that you got glutened by yours.

You have a chinese restaurant in Edmonton, Pearl River I think it is,if you let them know ahead of time they will make the things that aren't usually gluten-free gluten-free for you. They have many things that have no gluten in them and they will use Gluten-free soy sauce also.

  2. I'm going simply nuts, too. I only realized recently, with an outbreak of some weird rash, that I might have a problem. I found this site today and started reading about cosmetics and shampoos. My husband and I have spent the entire day reading labels - Herbal Essence is what I've been using and it's got wheat in it! We've thrown out a mountain of bottles today and tomorrow I'm going shopping.

I'm finding that Proctor and Gamble products and websites are almost devoid of information on ingredients. It's so maddening.

I wonder if anyone can tell me if Covergirl mascara is safe?

And what about a deodorant? I've been using Dry Idea.

I was so grateful for the list of safe Neutrogena products. They're getting my patronage.

I use Tom's natural deoderant but I am also starting to make my own. I make all my own shampoo's, soaps, fabric softener, I am now working on makeup. I am so sick of finding wheat in everything, now I know it will be safe because I know what is in these things.

  3. I have gotten violently ill and broken out with horrible dh on my eye and face from just a few crumbs. The longer I am gluten free the sicker I get. I have to wipe down my desk and everything on it at work because a couple of crumbs are enough to make me sick for a few days. Granted some are not as sensative as I am but if it makes me that sick you know it is doing damage.

  4. Definitely give them a call or talk to the manager or chef. Many restaurants unfortunately do not and will not do anything special or different for us. I have encountered ones that will not use clean separate bowls or clean the grill. Some do things to the potato or keep them with buns.

  5. No, but it would exacerbate my weight scale! <_<

I am still desperately trying to lose the weight I put on with the prednisone. Started a really, honest to goodness "lose weight" diet last week. First in my lifetime. See, the good thing about diarrhea 20 times a day is that I used to be able to eat junk food until it was coming out of my battoozies and I wouldn't gain an ounce. All that changed after I had the prednisone.

I have already lost 7 lbs. I have cut out ALL chocolate, chips, etc.etc. I also have bought one of those pedometer/calorie counters and go for long walks every day now. It has an FM radio attached to it. I find that if I listen to music while walking, I can walk twice as far. Another funny thing too, if I chew Trident while walking, it makes it much easier (I was getting gas pains from the gas working it's way up my body, but the Trident seems to get me burping alot while I walk, which is an added plus because I don't have to worry about working that gas out of my system later!)

    Hugs.

    Karen

Karen, where did you get your pedometer and was it expensive? Having the big d all day never helped me lose weight. You think it would have but all I did was gain.

  6. Hi Jody,

Welcome to the board. This is a great place for support. At first your symptoms sounded like mine when I was suffering from pernicious anemia and sometimes I still get them. It is hard to tell they could be associated with celiac disease or not. That is the problem this disease can affect many areas of your body and with over 200 different symptoms it is hard to tell. Sometimes blood tests are not that reliable. The thyroid test for me is not it took ultra sound to find out those problems and an antibody test.

  7. Hi Betty,

I know where you are coming from. Today at work there was a small foil wrapped easter egg. I popped it in my mouth without thinking. Then it hit me, I did not know the ingredients ,I spit it out quickly. Then I really wanted a pizza, so I stopped and got pizza pizza crusts so I could make my own. I hate the pain and the dh and thoughts of falling off occured to me but then I remember how sick I get.

It's sometimes so hard and other times it is so easy.

  8. I wish all of you who have problems with your coworkers could work with the people I do. Today in my mail slot, some of the other men and women I work with had found on the net and printed out gluten-free recipes for me. The coordinator may be a pain but I certainly would miss my coworkers if I left here.

  9. I was hungry and ate many times a day,but it was not all carbs. I did crave carbs but much of the time I ate fruit and vegetables and still gained weight.. I do not crave carbs that much anymore. That is one reason they were busy thinking I was not Celiac I was "just too fat." They figured I ate small towns which I didn't. The losing weight makes me very happy because the weight gain was the most physically and emotionally destroying problem. People don't ever look at why a person could be fat, just that they are fat or thin. This disease is very debilitating in many ways. The pain, the fatigue, the "D", the gain or losing weight not just takes a physical told but a very emotional toll. They truly need to take all of that into account along with all the other problems involved.

  10. I had pernicious anemia undiagnosed for over a year because one doctor said it was the flu or menopause (which it wasn't). Then I saw the GI who refused to look into thyroid (which is in the family) or anything else. That is because "it was all in my head" that is why I had to have iron infusions in the hospital. I could not take normal iron pills because I could not absorb it so I was on shots until I discovered sublingual (under the tongue) B-12 tablets. They could have discovered all of this a very long time ago but they were too busy telling me I was crazy
