@Ava B, I recommend the book by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, the Autoimmune Protocol Diet. She is Celiac with Celiac kids and designed the diet which has been scientifically proven to promote healing. The AutoImmune Protocol diet is what I followed and experienced rapid healing. The AIP diet removes dairy, grains, and legumes. Nightshades are also...

Celiac's No period Infertilty
knitty kitty replied to Ribbygirl6's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
@Ribbygirl6, I had menstrual irregularities before my Celiac diagnosis. I believe that being deficient in Vitamin D played a BIG part. Vitamin D deficiency affects your hormone levels. You must get your Vitamin D levels up by supplementing. Optimal level is above 75 nmol/l. Here's more information.... "Association between serum... -
DH reaction to rice or rice flour?
knitty kitty replied to Maureen Haley's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
The article I posted does mention Intrinsic Factor deficiency. Pernicious anemia occurs because the parietal cells don't produce Intrinsic Factor, hence Intrinsic Factor deficiency. Glad you found an article specifically stating oral B12 replacement works for pernicious anemia. Keep up the good research! -
Joanna, I'm so glad to hear you are taking thiamine and B Complex. My symptoms would fluctuate based on how active I was and if I was stressed. You use more Thiamine during activity and stress. If I felt not up to par, I would take more thiamine. I had to find the right amount for me. I took 1000 mg a day of Thiamine HCl at times. As my body...

You may want to discuss with your doctor the benefits of supplementing with a B Complex vitamin and high dose Thiamine. Thiamine is needed for digestion, to turn proteins, fats and carbohydrates into energy for the body to function. Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include fatigue and migraines. POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome... -
DH reaction to rice or rice flour?
knitty kitty replied to Maureen Haley's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
@trents, I'm sorry to step in, but oral high doses of B12 can be used to correct V B12 deficiency. By taking high doses, the B12 can get into the cells by passive diffusion. (Passive diffusion is where something moves from an area of high concentration like outside a cell to an area of lower concentration like inside a cell.) ... -

B12 is just one of the group of eight B vitamins. You need to get Sue a B Complex supplement that includes all eight B vitamins. Just taking one B vitamin can throw the others out of whack. Get a B Complex with all eight B vitamins. Vitamin C and Vitamin D will help, too! Hope Sue feels better! -
Hi, @lehum, Keep in mind that Celiac Disease damages the areas in our intestines where vitamins and minerals are usually absorbed resulting in malnutrition. Taking additional B vitamins may be warranted. (Talk to your doctor.) That pins and needles feeling , neuropathy, can be a symptom of several of the B vitamins' deficiencies. Nerves need...

Thiamine Thiamine Thiamine
knitty kitty replied to knitty kitty's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, with thiamine deficiency the body burns fat stores and will also break down muscle to provide energy as well. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that a thiamine deficiency diagnosis can be made if a patient is given 300 mg of thiamine hydrochloride (thiamine HCl) a day for a week and notices improvement. Blood tests for vitamin deficiencies... -
@Ginger38, DH is pressure sensitive. I could go to the store and get DH blisters on the palms of my hands from pushing a buggy around. I've had DH under elastic every where you mentioned plus some. Try wearing natural fibers (cotton, linen, etc) that wick moisture away from the body. The heat and friction will be lessened. I doubt...

knitty kitty replied to JohnSue's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Celiac Disease results in malnutrition because those flattened villi can't absorb nutrients, hence the weight loss. Dairy products can cause inflammation and damage to the villi just as wheat, barley and rye. Testing for vitamin and mineral deficiencies are part of proper follow up care for Celiac patients. Talk with the doctor about supplementing... -
@CoachJohnOK, Please stay and keep posting your questions. You don't need a diagnosis to learn about Celiac Disease. There's a lot to learn. Ask the VA hospital for a copy of their endoscopy report be sent to your doctor. The issues they found but couldn't explain need to be reviewed by a pathologist familiar with Celiac Disease. Perhaps your...

Newly diagnosed with blood tests, afraid to eat
knitty kitty replied to PammaDawn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
@PammaDawn, It's a big adjustment in how one thinks about food, absolutely! It can be scary, but you'll catch on quickly. I liked one pot meals when I was learning. Meat and veggies baked in the oven or stewed in a crock pot were my basics. Pretty boring, but easy, nutritious and gut friendly. Do check out the recipe section on our forum... -

Welcome to the forum! I found the AutoImmune Protocol diet by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne (a Celiac mom herself) very helpful. It's very conducive to healing. I found having a pot of stew of grass fed meat and fresh veggies very easy and handy to have on a back burner. Eating small frequent meals will help with digestion and keeping your energy up. ... -
Neurologic Problems with celiac disease

Welcome to the forum! When do these sensations happen? I ask because I have similar weirdness when my blood glucose level drops suddenly. This happens sometimes when I might be sitting watching a movie for a while and abruptly get up and start moving around. It takes a few moments while my body adjusts to the higher energy demands, during which time... -

Combination of results and issues
knitty kitty replied to Tara90's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Would DNA testing for the most common Celiac genes be possible for you? If you've got the genes and positive serology, the doctors might be willing to take another look with an endoscopy, although some doctors will make a diagnosis of Celiac Disease with just the genes and positive blood tests. The damage to the small intestine is often microscopic... -
Cutting down on foods that are high in iodine will help keep your DH from flaring so badly. Instead of iodized salt, try pink Himalayan salt Avoid crustaceans, shellfish, seafood and kelp (nori). They are all high in iodine. Avoid dairy and eggs, too. These are high in iodine as well. Niacin, Vitamin B3, will help calm down your flares...

@CharlesBronson, You need to check the amount of carbohydrates you ate at each of those meals where your glucose levels stayed elevated beyond two hours. Adjusting the amount of carbohydrates at meals may help you keep your glucose levels down. And watch out for sugary drinks between meals. I kept a food/mood/poo'd journal to track my carbohydrates...
