  1. I've been doing a lot of googling and reading tonight. A couple of things that I found interesting.....studies showed that with identical twins (hence identical gene markers), if one of them gets celiac disease, the other twin has a 70% chance of getting it, but then again, may not. A few people have gotten diagnosed celiac disease WITHOUT any of the presdisposing...
  2. Well, be glad you don't have the added worry of celiac, BUT...here's the key phrase in Dr. Fine's comment: "Two copies also means there is an even stronger predisposition to gluten sensitivity than having one gene and the resultant immunologic gluten sensitivity may be more severe." And here's another comment fromDr. Fine which you may not yet...
  3. In one of my celiac books I remember reading about a similar subject....it said the body actually has an adaptation ability....that when you eat gluten the body can over adapt to the "poison" gluten, hence you may not react, but over time you get overloaded and the adaptation ability breaks down. Something like that, it made some sense to me when I read...
  4. My mom nearly died 40 years ago from celiac disease....no one could figure out what her problem was...they tested for everything and concluded it was all in her head. Finally she met a doctor who knew about celiac disease. At that point, she weighed 80 lbs (her normal weight would have been 115-120). She was sick continuously, couldn't eat, was in terrible...
  5. I was just reading the latest issue of Elle...big article on Jessica Simpson, which mentioned that she'd gotten really sick last year with intestinal bleeding....and discovere that among other "allergies", she was allergic to wheat. I don't know if that means wheat allergy, or rather, something like gluten sensitivity and celiac disease.
  6. PLEASE...right away email Enterolab...Phyllis will answer you quickly. Send her all your results (so she won't have to go look them up) in your email, and ask her to explain the meaning of your gene test...i.e. are those celiac genes, or gluten sensitivity genes, or what....you may not be picking up the right info and the email they send out has a LOT...
  7. Unfortunately, we are ALL (and that includes doctors) programmed to want a specific test to reveal a specific diagnosis with total clarity. The sad thing is that celiac disease & gluten sensitivity are very VAGUE and not well understood...not yet. The blood tests for celiac disease tend to be revealing if the state of your condition has advanced into...
  8. For over 20 years I had a lot of breathing difficulties. At times I felt like you might feel if someone were laying on top of you...I felt like I couldn't expand my lungs fully, and breathing was a real effort. Not all the time, but a lot of the time. I also had a chronic cough that went on for months at a time, then sometimes would go away for awhile...
  9. Your Enterolab tests seem pretty conclusive....in the first two, being over 10 they demonstrate auto immune reactions and antibodies, hence at the very least gluten sensitvity. Similarly, your casein score indicates sensitivity to that as well. The interesting score is your fecal fat score....over the 300 "normal" rate. This COULD indicate the more serious...
  10. A clear case of "DENIAL" goes on with most of us. Yeah, we all go through it to some extent. I spent nearly a year going back and forth, denying the extent of the problem. I guess one finally gets to the point where you say "OK, I give up...I get it."
  11. I'm now 57. When I was a baby, and even as high as age 6, I was having a lot of digestive issues, and a lot of it sounds like your daughter. No answers then, though....that was about 1949 thru 1955 when this was going on. Fast forward to 1969, and my mom had been sick for quite a few years, and in 1969 was finally lucky enough to meet up with a doctor...
  12. I just got done reading the newest gluten book..."The Gluten Connection: How Gluten Sensitivity May Be Sabotaging Your health & What you can do to take control now", published in November 06, $12 at Amazon. This is a good book, has a lot which many of us already know, but also some newer information. I learned a lot of new stuff from it. This...
  13. Once you have a little knowledge and suspicion about this, NOT knowing can drive you nuts. At least, it was that way for me. My mom was diagnosed with celiac disease in 1969. I didn't have the same symptoms, but I've had digestive issues my whole life. Things got progressively worse until I got really sick in Dec. 05. I had always thought my main problem...
  14. I got a sample in the mail today of a new protein bar made by Lame Advertisement (I previously bought a magnesium supplement from them, so I suppose that's why they sent the bars). Anyhow, this bar is seriously delicious and I plan to order them. And they are: gluten/lactose/soy/casein free. I just tried the coconut almond flavor, and it was just soooo...
  15. When we were testing our son 15 years ago, we had extensive blood testing done thru his alllergist....also the skin prick tests. For the blood tests, he was tested for all sorts of foods, and tested both for immediate reaction and for delayed reaction. The results were somewhat different, with much more showing up on the delayed test and the numbers were...
  16. I can tell you that absolutely yes, an allergy/intolerance, whatever you want to call it, can happen at any time in your life. A good friend of mine who loves strawberries and has eaten them all her life (she is now 58) finally ate one too many....last year while having a bowl of them she had a sudden anaphylactic reaction and ended up in the emergency...
  17. Curt...just a thought...why don't you post here a couple of day's eating so we can see what sorts of things you eat. That might provide some clues...
  18. I have never been a person who reacted violently. So after my diagnosis in Jan. of 06, I went pretty seriously gluten free from then until October, with only a slip-up here and there. We went to Hawaii in October, so the cheating really started there. First, I split pancakes with my husband. That became a daily thing. Then some bread at dinner. Then...
  19. There is a very STRONG correlation with lupus and celiac disease, although this fact is apparently not well known. In the book Dangerous Grains, I think it was, I read about a doctor in Australia who was handed a group of 75 hopeless lupus patients....their own doctor had given up helping them. This 2nd doctor put them all on a gluten free diet, and for...
  20. I'm really craving banana cake with cream cheese frosting. Does anyone have a recipe or adaptation to some type of mix which could make a decent banana cake?
  21. I might add that my celiac mom was diagnosed in 1969...not a single intentional gluten grain has passed her lips since then...and she's a very healthy, happy, young looking 86 year old! So 37+ years without grains hasn't hurt her a bit!
  22. I've done a LOT of reading on gluten and celiac disease, etc. and one thing is emphasized over and over: There is ZERO need to eat wheat/rye/barley...the main gluten grains. Wheat is actually POISON....if you put gluten into a petri dish with human tissue, the gluten attacks the tissue. Gluten containing grains have only been eaten for a small part of...
  23. Your symptoms are highly suspicious and very consistent with EITHER celiac disease (the most extreme reaction within the broad spectrum of gluten sensitivity) OR plain old run of the mill gluten sensitivity. Doctors who study this are beginning to suggest that as many as 80% of Americans might be gluten sensitive to one degree or another. Gluten sensitivity...
  24. I have selectively had problems with various dairy items. Ice cream has been a no-no my whole life. I think perhaps it's a combination of high fat and high sugar, in addition to the dairy. Moderate cheese doesn't seem problematic at all, although a LOT of cheese can upset me. What I finally decided was that I need to limit my dairy consumption to no more...
  25. I have found that I am sensitive to a LOT of things, and to multiple mixtures of things. I don't do well at all with most of the gluten free cookies, cakes etc. I feel really really good if I just eat plain meats, veggies, fruit. But you've got to be careful as heck. I bought a rotisserie chicken at the market several times, and always got sick from it...
