  1. I have increasingly come to believe that the calories in-calories out theory is NOT the whole story. I have read, and come to believe, that you can actually eat TOO FEW calories. Taking myself as an example, last June 1 I embarked on a Body for Life style exercise/eating regimen. I was exercising 6 days a week and burning 500+ calories per day on exercise...
  2. Weight problems...bleechhh! After having no weight problems at all, I had my 2nd child at 36, put on extra lbs and have never taken it all off....I'm now 57, I weigh 157 and would be at my best at about 135. No matter what I do, that weight does not budge. When I went gluten free I thought that might be the key for me, but it made no difference. There...

    ARCHIVED Cold Hands

Me too, I also have cold hands and feet all winter long. As soon as the weather turns cold, I start wearing my Smart Wool socks (I found them at REI), which are really comfortable and warm, and not hugely thick, either. I recently got one of those rice bags, and they're great for warming up the hands. I don't believe I'm anemic, but the cold hand/feet...
  4. Christian is right about the casein intolerance.....I always thought I was lactose intolerant (that's a sensitivity to milk SUGAR), and I probably am, but I found out thru Enterolab testing that I am also casein intolerant...casein is the milk protein. I actually think casein and/or lactose in dairy gives me more problems than does the gluten. Or the two...
  5. I think "celiac" reactions are all over the board, everyone is different. My mom was diagnosed celiac 40 years ago. She almost died, and even today, if she ever gets even a smidgen of gluten she is guaranteed to be violently ill very quickly. It's bad enough for her that she never is even tempted to cheat. We were always told of its genetic nature, but...
  6. Hi Sissy.....I'm 57 and only just got diagnosed last January via Enterolab. I had given up on the regular medical establishment. My mom was diagnosed as celiac 40 years ago....at a point where doctors knew very little and she literally almost died of starvation (malabsorption, destroyed villi) before one sharp, knowledgeable doctor figured it out and tested...
  7. Aah, the family! I think they will never really understand fully. Which means the ball is entirely in your court. At least, this is what I have found to be true. I've had digestive issues since birth. I had a "sensitive" stomach. I was finally diagnosed just a year ago at age 56....thru my own efforts by research and getting an Enterolab test done...
  8. I've tried LOTS of things, but recently tried Maximum Strength Pepsid AC and it is the best so far for me. Nothing seems to totally eliminate it, though.
  9. Karen....I don't know what to say about insensitive family members, but all I can say is that in general, with something like celiac which is not so obvious on the outside (like something visible would be), it's hard for people to understand. Heck, my mom is celiac....it nearly killed her before one single sharp doctor figured it out 40 years ago just in...
  10. We got a roasted chicken from the market yesterday.....it had some sort of sauce though I'm not sure what....knowing better I ate it anyway at about 7:00p.m., then at about 11:00 I started getting terrible pains in my upper stomach area, then about 4:00 a.m. I woke up with really bad pain and I felt like I was going to throw up for about an hour or so. I...
  11. I thought I was lactose intolerant for years and years. In fact, I never suspected celiac, but instead, thought my problem was entirely due to dairy. I took lactaid....perhaps it helped a bit, but not entirely. Fast forward to this past January, and I got tested for celiac/gluten and casein, the milk protein. Not only did I test positive to celiac/gluten...
  12. Yes....we are the lucky ones. As I just read somewhere, celiac disease is the ONLY autoimmune disease in which the CAUSE is known. We just don't eat gluten and we're fine. No drugs to take, no other things to worry about. We get better if we don't eat gluten. We are very lucky. I feel very fortunate that I know exactly how to make myself feel normal...
  13. I actually don't seem to be having uncontrollable cravings at this point in time. But distilling things down to my top favorites, it would be 1) The fabulous bear claws from a local bakery...to die for! 2) Krispy Kreme plain glazed donuts (sigh) 2) cake donuts with either chocolate or maple frosting 3) pizza (smelling it is torture). Most other...
  14. Don't ever underestimate how into denial people can be. Here's my own example: my mom was diagnosed with celiac 40 years ago. I have obviously had some form of it my whole life (I'm now 56), but since I didn't react the way my mom did (sever vomiting, lost huge amounts of weight, nearly died) my mom of course didn't think I could possibly have it. She...
  15. Is there a particular reason for an endoscopy, other than wanting "to know for sure"??? Why not just handle it yourself by going thru Enterolab....get the full panel gluten sensitivity test for $369 and you'll find out if you have antibody reactions going on, malabsorption, casein sensitivity, and a gene test is thrown in as well. Together with the knowledge...
  16. Keep it simple! No one will know what celiac disease is, and the "Disease" word frightens people off. I just say gluten sensitive, or because most people don't even know what gluten is, to further simplify I just say I can't eat anything with wheat in it.
  17. Hi Rohan.....I have always loved Indian food, but while a lot of it is actually great for people with celiac disease, here are some things I have trouble with: The naan breads are of course eaten a lot, so there might be your #1 problem. Some people with celiac/gluten problems also have problems with dairy, and so some of the cream sauces could cause problems...
  18. The facts are not all in with celiac disease. And all of the associated genes have not yet been identified. It's all somewhat murky, actually. Some people with the celiac and gluten sensitive genes never get it. They merely have the predisposition but perhaps they can go thru life and it will enver be triggered. Lucky them! However, Dr. Fine emphasizes...
  19. I just got furious reading your comments. Get a new doctor...don't waste another minute or another dollar on this ignoramus. A doctor is someone you HIRE to help you, and you can just as well FIRE him/her if he doesn't have the knowledge. The sad fact is that many many, probably most U.S. doctors are sadly ignorant about the facts of celiac disease and...
  20. Can you go to www.kinnikinnick.com and order some of their things? I think your husband will like them....much better than the things you've tried thus far (I tried them too). In particular, the English muffins are GREAT, also the Italian white tapioca bread. And the animal cookies are great, too! As are the donuts. I gave some to my 84 year old mom...
  21. I really suggest starting with just plain, ordinary foods you cook yourself. Lean meats, fish, fresh or frozen vegetables, fruits without added sugar. Lots of water. Doing this will get all the gluten out of your system and allow things to calm down. Casein is the protein in milk, and intolerance to gluten often goes hand in hand with intolerance to the...
  22. And Radman....you're a delightful exception to the clueless doctor rule because you FIGURED IT OUT! Actually, there are undoubtedly a whole boatload of gassy and otherwise symptomatic doctors out there who also are celiac or gluten sensitive, but they don't know it!
  23. Looking back, before I suspected gluten as a problem, I would go thru periods where I almost didn't want to eat because it seemed like every food in the universe bothered me or made me sick. What I think now is that my system was in such a turmoil from the gluten and casein I was eating, this affected my ability to digest everything else. Like you, I...
  24. I experienced most of your symptoms....and finally got scared and had to figure out my problem after I had an extreme dizziness episode that appeared to be related to eating a LOT of gluten items over about a 12 hour period. Getting gluten out of my diet changed everything for me, and since I wanted something more definite than dietary response, I went to...
  25. If you're like me, at first you were feeling sorry for yourself about having celiac and looking for all sorts of substitutions. Then I realized...WAIT....I didn't really eat all this stuff much before, why am I eating it now. Some of the great things I found....for example, the Kinnikinnick animal cookies which were great...the very first ingredient was...
