ARCHIVED Is Celiac Gender Specific?
CeliaCruz replied to chuikov's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
And what the frig does any of this have to do with gender specificity? I mean besides the obvious fact that someone in this thread needs to take a Midol.... -
ARCHIVED Which One Of You Did This?
CeliaCruz replied to CeliaCruz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So I take it you either work for Conde Nast or Radar Magazine. (Is that you, Anna Wintour? I had no idea you were a Celiac! I guess that's why you are so thin!) -
Here's the deal. While there is such a thing as "bartending school" (where they teach sanitation issues and such), most bartenders have not attended such an institution. I never attended one. Most bartenders (and practically ALL cocktail waitresses) are hired on the basis of a) their personality, their looks, c) their past experience, d) how well they...

Actually, handling drinks isn't just like handling food. I used to bartend and the sanitation issues are different than the ones in kitchens. First off, a bartender's hands are usually clean because he or she is often washing glasses -- and thus a lot of us have to apply hand cream frequently. Secondly, because bartenders are serving liquid, there isn...

That's a really nice thought. I often get frustrated at having to be the one to educate the doctor on what Celiac is. I mean, they're the ones who went to medical school and making the big bucks, shouldn't they be telling ME what I should do? But, like it or not, there is so little awareness of this disease and therefore it comes down to us to spread the...

I'm probably in the minority here, but I don't think it's any of this woman's business what your health problems are and there are no additional explanations needed. You were AUTHORIZED by a faculty member to put your lunch in that particular fridge. End of story. If this woman doesn't like it, she can take it up with the teacher who gave you permission...

Oh, doncha just LOVE it when the doctor says "Do you mind if I have the other doctors here see this?" I just feel special all over...like a leper with my own hit sitcom! But seriously, now that the rash is more or less under control, I'd try to get yourself a good dermatologist. He or she will probably prescribe you a non-steroid cream like Protopic...

ARCHIVED What Is The Role Of The Nih In Educating The Public About Gluten Intolerance ?
CeliaCruz replied to marciab's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Perhaps, But if a pharmaceutical company were to come up with a pill that would make it possible for Celiacs to eat gluten without damaging their intestines (or at least eat something that was cross contaminated etc.) they would make a fortune. I know I'd take it. Celiac is a lifelong disease and if one 1 of every 133 in the US had to take a pill everyday... -
ARCHIVED Food Testing Methodology
CeliaCruz replied to Packard's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I found that cross-contamination issues throw a monkey wrench into my food testing methodology, so I stopped eating out altogether. For instance, McDonald's fries are supposed to be gluten-free but sometimes they bother me and sometimes they don't. So I had to eliminate them just to be safe. Now that everything I eat is something I've prepared myself,... -

Man, remember the good old days when guys used to try to get you drunk so they could date rape you? The times, they are a-changing! -

I'm laughing...and yet as soon as one of those things is on the market, I'm camping out overnight in front of Circuit City (or where ever) and buying the first one. -

Yeah, and whenever I'm asked about symptoms, we're always at the dinner table. Do you really want to know? Now? Can we just leave it at "gastrointestinal problems" until after dessert? -

Not exactly a co-worker, family member or friend here... I'm reading this mystery novel right now and one of the characters has Celiac disease! Apparently the author did some really good research because there's a lot of detail about this woman that rings true: she can't eat wheat, she's too thin, her family doesn't believe she really has a disease... -

I also get a lot of the "oh you can have this, it doesn't have wheat in it...just flour!" And then sometimes I get interesting variations like "oh, but this was made with organic flour, you can have that, right? Or "oh, this is carrot cake." Or "this is fruit cake." Or "try some spinach pasta. I mean I realize that being celiac kind of makes you more... -
Any medications? Vitamins? Since you describe having "chronic semi-diarrhea" instead of individual episodes of diarrhea, I'm thinking that whatever is making you sick is something you are eating/taking/using on a regular basis...as opposed to the occasional mistake or cross-contamination here and there. Just a thought. As far as eliminating dairy goes...

ARCHIVED How Can You Tell If You Haven't Been Glutened?
CeliaCruz posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Due to this nasty case of Rosacea/acne/eczema that cropped up on my face this past month, my dermatologist put me on a powerful antibiotic called Dynacin. The Dynacin is clearing up my face much to my satisfaction, but, like most antibiotics, it has the side-effect of causing me some pretty major diarrhea. Now honestly? I'm vain. As long as my face... -
I didn't even realize that the "hot flashes" and rapid heartbeat were a symptom of Celiac until I eliminated gluten from my diet and noticed that they went away shortly thereafter. I used to have sweating issues to beat the band. You know how Whitney Houston sweats whenever she performs? That's me. Only I couldn't even blame stage lights, crack cocaine...

I'm amazed that this is even an issue. I mean, I realize that sometimes God is "in the details" and that certain traditions and rituals within the church need to be kept to a certain standard. I'm certainly not advocating that the church should just "chill out" and get rid of all the rules and doctrines that aren't "cool" anymore. But it's also important...

I also got really !@#$ed up on New Years Eve. I stuck to Skye Vodka martinis so I wouldn't have to worry about unknown mixers, but after three martinis, I blacked out. I literally don't remember huge chunks of the evening. Three martinis is not usually a lot for me. It'll get me pretty lubricated, but I don't black out or anything severe. And I had...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Get Angry At Having This Illness?
CeliaCruz replied to sillyyak's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Same here. In theory, I'm "angry" that I have this disease. I hate the inconvenience and social conflict that it causes. I'm mad that I wasn't diagnosed earlier by the highly respected doctors who treated me. I'm pissed off that there isn't a pill I can take that will make this all go away. Yada yada yada. On the other hand, my general mood is just... -
ARCHIVED Store Bought Gluten-free Bread Recommendations?
CeliaCruz replied to chestnut's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've tried a lot of the gluten-free breads out there -- including the ones recommended by posters on this forum -- and I have to say that I've come to the conclusion that gluten is what makes bread "bread". The best thing I could ever say about a loaf of gluten-free bread is when I was eating the Whole Foods "Prarie Bread" and I thought, "oh, this isn't... -
ARCHIVED Horrible Restaurant Experience
CeliaCruz replied to NY Hubbers's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Also, the unknown presence of peanuts in a dish can KILL someone who has a severe peanut allergy. If wheat sneaks into your dish and you're Celiac, it won't *kill* you. It'll just make you sick for a few days...and otherwise *contribute* to a variety of fatal health problems that you may suffer if you eat more gluten. And if that happens, it's hard to... -
ARCHIVED Shadybrook Farms Ground Turkey
CeliaCruz posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So I made this awesome turkey meatloaf a few nights ago (Lay's Stax instead of breadcrumbs etc. -- gluten free, all the way) and I got this weird feeling in my gut after I started eating it. I went and retrieved the package from the Shadybrook Farms ground turkey and noticed that the label said that it contained ground turkey...and NATURAL FLAVORING! My... -
ARCHIVED Do You Ever Miss The Stupid Things?
CeliaCruz replied to Lauren M's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm a firm believer in the concept that states "if you can say it, you don't need to do it." Like let's say you really hate someone at work and you have all these violent feelings toward them, if you can turn to a trusted friend or relative and say, "I want to kill that !@#$ing jerk I work with!" you might actually get some release and not actually resort...
