ARCHIVED Should She Be Tested?
Guhlia replied to Reader's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It is my understanding that once positive, always positive, even if it was just a weak positive. She was likely going through the "honeymoon" period when she did not react to gluten. This is common in children. If she had a weak positive blood test when she was a child, she needs to remain on the gluten free diet for life. I wish it could just go away like... -
ARCHIVED Pumpkin Whoopie Pies
Guhlia replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Sad that a silly cereal could actually throw a Celiac into odd dreams, huh? Hope you at least had a good time down there in Florida. If I knew what it tasted like I would order a case from Amazon, but sadly I've never tried the cereal so I don't want to risk it. -
This recipe is adapted from a recipe found on allrecipes.com by Deb Stuber. Makes 24 whoopie pies. INGREDIENTS * 1 cup shortening * 2 cups packed brown sugar * 2 eggs * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract * 3 1/2 cups gluten-free flour mix + 3 teaspoons xantham gum * 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder * 1 1/2 teaspoons baking...

ARCHIVED Best Gluten Free Beer?
Guhlia replied to Cottage-Soul's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oops, sorry... I think Red Bridge tastes similar to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with a hint of Heineken flavor. DH agrees. I couldn't really compare any of the other beers to mainstream beers. Then again, I wasn't a huge beer drinker pre-gluten-free so I don't have a lot of room for comparisons. -
ARCHIVED Best Gluten Free Beer?
Guhlia replied to Cottage-Soul's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They all taste like "real" beer. You could easily mix any one of these three talked about in with barley/wheat beers and not be able to tell that they're "special". -
Actually, I get MUCH sicker from CC than I do if I accidentally eat a gluten ingredient. For example, I get sick from just a crumb if I'm eating out, but if I sat down and ate a piece of pizza I probably wouldn't get sick at all. When I did my gluten challenge a year and a half ago I made it just over a month eating gluten every single day at every meal and...

ARCHIVED Best Gluten Free Beer?
Guhlia replied to Cottage-Soul's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can' remember if Red Bridge says gluten free on the label, I think it may. Either way, I contacted Anhueser-Busch when it first came out before I drank a bottle and they assured me that it was 100% gluten free. They had a recall in the very beginning due to possible contamination, but it turned out that the beer was fine and not contaminated. Before I got... -
ARCHIVED Best Gluten Free Beer?
Guhlia replied to Cottage-Soul's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
New Grist is lighter than Bard's Tale. Bard's Tale is much more full bodied. -
ARCHIVED Best Gluten Free Beer?
Guhlia replied to Cottage-Soul's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
RED BRIDGE is the best lighter tasting beer. Bard's Tale is the best fuller beer. Red Bridge is much cheaper as it's made by Anhueser-Busch. It's also easily found. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Yellow Birthday Cake Recipe?
Guhlia replied to emi-220's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Nikki, did you use xantham gum? Many gluten free recipes turn out crumbly due to the lack of gluten. Try the recipe on allrecipes.com. It uses mayo as the fat which helps to hold it together really well. Mine weren't crumbly at all and no one could even tell that they were gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Glutino Cold Cereals
Guhlia replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The apple cinnamon ones are pretty good, but not near as good as the honey nut ones. They need more sugar or something. They're good though. -

ARCHIVED Jelly Beans! Tis The Season
Guhlia replied to surfgolden's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I believe that Wal-mart's Great Value brand of jelly beans is gluten free. If it is, it will have gluten free printed right on the label. -
ARCHIVED Thumbs Up For Disney World!
Guhlia replied to pajamama2's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Be very wary of counter service at the places that look "fast-foodie". We had a VERY bad experience at one of the burger joints in Magic Kingdom. I can't remember the name of the place, but I got glutened. They gave us the wrong food TWICE and told us it was gluten free. Thank God they had other things in the order messed up or I would've eaten the gluten... -
Jerry, I know your blood tests showed negative, but... Consider this... Lactose is processed on the ends of the villi in the intestine. If your villi are blunted, damaged, or flattened this could easily cause temporary lactose intolerance. This leads me to believe that you most likely actually HAVE Celiac with typical Celiac damage (damaged villi). Now, I...

ARCHIVED Driving From Ny To Florida
Guhlia replied to de caps's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You can absolutely make it in two days. We took our two year old last year (two day drive) and she's three this year and we made the trip again just a few weeks ago. It was a piece of cake. Granted, we're in PA, so we're a little closer to FL than you, but... I'm sure you can make it. We always stop in Savannah, Georgia, but that might be a little unreasonable... -
ARCHIVED Swiss Heavy Cream
Guhlia posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can't find anything about the gluten free status of Swiss Quality heavy cream. As a rule of thumb, are heavy creams generally safe? I use it in my mashed potatoes, but I always buy Great Value brand which has gluten free printed right on it. We can't get to our nearest Wal-mart because of the ice, so my husband picked up some Swiss brand cream. Should I... -
ARCHIVED What Is Your Favorite gluten-free Recipe?
Guhlia replied to cgilsing's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Kibbie, if you like the crab cakes, try the crab balls! They're delicious and they make a great appetizer or accompaniment to a meal. *Imitation crab meat is generally NOT gluten free* You're welcome! I'm glad your family enjoyed it. -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Recall!
Guhlia replied to hammondtam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There was no code on the lid... There's a number imprinted in the bottom of the jar 625-11. Does that look right? If so, I guess we're safe, huh? Half of the jar is gone, but I'd happily throw it away if it may not be safe. -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Recall!
Guhlia replied to hammondtam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Where do you find the product code??? I always use Great Value brand peanut butter! I have three containers of it here at home. -
ARCHIVED What Do You Eat For Breakfast?!
Guhlia replied to LittleZoe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I generally have eggs and bacon or eggs and hash browns. Sometimes I eat gluten free pancakes or waffles with no syrup. You can make pancakes with pumpkin puree to increase nutritional content. Very delicious. Waffles are good topped with fresh fruit. Ham steak with fried potatoes would be good too. Meat and potato don't take long at all to cook and you can... -
ARCHIVED Easy Gluten Free Brownies
Guhlia replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You will NOT be disappointed in these. If you have a clear glass pan to use, use it. This way you can be sure they're not burning on the outside and still wet on the inside. Make sure you cook them thoroughly. I ended up cooking them 10 minutes longer than recommended. I also used a 5x9 pan though to make them a little thicker than regular brownies. They... -
Okay guys, I just made a tray of brownies with my little girl and we both agree, they're the best brownies we've ever had. They're chewy on the outside and soft on the inside. The frosting is amazing and so simple to make. This recipe is adapted from an Allrecipes.com recipe posted by Angie (not me) entitled Best Brownies. INGREDIENTS * 1/2 cup...

ARCHIVED How Likely Is It?
Guhlia replied to Guhlia's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
We can't go to our family doctor due to private insurance. Our rates are already outrageous because of x-rays and my being pregnant. They just keep raising them over and over again. Anyway, what do you guys think the chance of him testing positive on Enterolab would be? He eats very little gluten, sometimes he'll go weeks without it. When he does eat it,...
