  1. is this something that insurance will cover?
  2. oops
  3. carla, what test kit did you order from igenex? after my neurologist fiasco, i have kind of forgotten about asking to be tested for lyme. since i went back to our orthoped to treat my pain, i am thinking i might be able to get him to test me for it. when my oldest son was having some problems and i mentioned that some of the other kids had been diagnosed...
  4. it could be related to celiac, and it could be a totally separate issue. it could even be the cause of the symptoms that make you think your husband has celiac. (what are his symptoms, anyway)
  5. most of our baking is done using "regular" recipes and converting to gluten free. we probably use betty hagman's featherlight mix the most. we add somewhere near 1 tsp. of xanthan gum per cup of flour. 3 cups rice flour 3 cups tapioca flour 3 cups cornstarch 3 tablesponns potato flour (not starch) we do alot of baking and most of it turns out really...
  6. sarah, are you talking about a nursing baby? have you eliminated soy, too?
  7. ok, i will probably sound a little insensitive here----but testing, which usually involves a blood draw is no more traumatic than getting immunizations. heck, my kids have thrown worse fits about having a bath or getting their hair washed. i think it is mom and dad that get more traumatized. when my baby was in the hospital, it was my husband who couldn...
  8. my daughter just had to have a ton of dental work done in january. they had to do work on 12 of her teeth, six of them required stainless steel crowns. the dentist said that she has some enamel hypoplasia. this was just a few months after her 3rd birthday. so far, she tests negative for celiac. she was failure to thrive for the first 2 years of her life...
  9. anything that irritates the intestines can cause mucous in the bowel movements. if the gluten free diet doesn't improve things, you might want to do some more investigating.
  10. you are right---it probably is a bit too paranoid!!LOL!!
  11. we still do alot of baking at our house. my twins didn't bake much before they were gluten free, but they have gotten pretty good at it, now. i recently made sweet rolls with cream cheese frosting , and fruited cheese danish. they were both really good. we've made some great apple pies with excellent crusts. if you were already a great baker-...
  12. here it is!! 2 tbsp shortening 1/4 c sugar 2/3 c milk--romm temp tbsp yeast 1 egg 1/4 c oil 1/2 c potato starch 1 cup corn starch 1/4 tsp baking soda 2 1/2 tsp xanthan gum 2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla preheat to 375 combine shortening and sugar, mix well. mix milk and yeast well to disolve yeast. add to sugar mixture...
  13. ami----there is a test that can be done for carpal tunnel---i am having it done next week. it is a nerve conduction test and should be able to tell where the numbness that i get in my hands is coming from----either the wrist, elbow, or shoulder. i also get nauseated easily----sometimes i think it is from reflux problems, other times i KNOW it is from emotionally...
  14. gerogiagirl---in case it helps any, feeling discouraged about this disease probably gets all of us, occasionally, at times. my girls have been diagnosed for about 1 1/2 years-----and i still occasionally cry about it----i just don't let them know. i can't tell you how much i wished it was me instead of my kids when they got the diagnosis.
  15. the AT1001 is a zonulin antagonist. zonulin is the chemical in our bodies that controls the "gates" in the small intestine that let food proteins out where they don't belong. in celiacs these gates get stuck open. AT1001 controls the amount of zonulin so that the gates stay shut when a person eats gluten. this is by no means intended to be a cure, but...
  16. i was thinking along the same line as tiffany----maybe a different counselor would be better for your son. i have gifted children, also, and while the school system may not have the best programs for them, they sure have alot of opportunity for socializing------but maybe you already have that aspect of teen life covered? we have had problems with one of...
  17. are you having your daughter's Ttg levels tested on a regular basis? this is a really good way to monitor how well you are following the diet. we test our girls about every 6 months. i would imagine that over time we will test them less often, but for now, it helps us to keep an eye on things.
  18. try not to get too discouraged. there are so many things that can cause symptoms similar to "glutening" symptoms. it can be too easy to automatically assume that gluten is the culprit.
  19. there are a couple of things hoping to treat celiac disease in the works right now. besides the enzyme, there is the zonulin antagonist that dr. fasano is working on-----it is already in the second phase of human trials. i have read somewhere that a combo of the enzyme and the antagonist might work pretty well. our ped gi tells me that there are hopes...
  20. i'm so glad you made them!! i was hoping someone would make them and enjoy them as much as we did. i was surprised at how big they turned out, too.
  21. i'm still guessing that it is total serum levels----especially since the doctor was checking your daughter's immune system function. the nurse may not have had the correct info----we've all seen that happen. lol!! without knowing total serum levels, the IgA and IgG testing is useless, because, if a person is deficient in one of these areas, their tests...
  22. i think that atopic dermatitis is a type of eczema, but not all eczema is atopic dermatitis---does that make sence? i actually do not have a problem with gluten---it is my children that have celiac disease. years ago, when my rashes were at their peak, i had skin-prick allergy testing done and was told i was not allergic to anything. now that i am older...
  23. there are a couple---and i can't remember them all---my mind is like a sieve. psoriasis is one. i need to look this up again because this question comes up on a regular basis on this board. we also have an appt. with our ped gi coming up soon. i'll ask him about this. he seems to be pretty up-to-date and knowledgeable with his info. i have also heard...
  24. i'll have to find where it is tucked away. it is a pretty good recipe and cooks up really thick just like the store-bought stuff.---if i don't post it soon, just send me a pm and remind me!! my brain is like a sieve sometimes.
  25. just a stab here---maybe eliminate the confirmed IGE allergies and make an appt. with a pediatric gastroenterologist. i've scratched my own skin off for years, but i have atopic dermatitis.
