  1. as has been mentioned, I would say the social aspects should be focused on... going out to restaurants, bars, clubs, pretty much anywhere you're gonna be for at least a few hours that might involve others eating and/or you needing to eat... I've been symptomatic of hypoglycemia since I was in middle school and was mostly fine going through high school/college...
  2. I'm hoping the conditioning work I put in drinking during college has stayed with me to some degree. And I've never been "just a splash" type drinker, but I'll see what I can do. For all I know, my tolerance to alcohol is better than my tolerance to food. Probably not, but I'm sure I can get myself drunk enough to believe it.
  3. I don't plan on drinking anytime soon but since I'm going to a wedding tomorrow and summer has now started on the shore, I'll probably make an exception here and there. So what can I safely drink? I've only drank once since going gluten-free in January so I haven't looked into the content of alcohol much... I can drink rums if they aren't spiced rums...
  4. I just went corn free a week or 2 ago so I don't know too much about what to look out for... I got an email back from a company stating "There is no corn kernel in the xylitol, so those with allergies to corn have no reaction to it." However, on their website, it states that "Xylitol is a natural sugar. It is derived from sources such as fruits, vegetables...
  5. cold hands aren't a celiac trait, they're a female trait ... my ex's hands could steal the warmth out of a fridge.. I actually have Raynaud's as well but I'm hot almost all the time, maybe even moreso since going gluten-free.. I do wear gloves on my hands when it's cold out as a preventative measure but haven't had many problems with the Raynaud's since...
  6. 1.) Have you been officially diagnosed with any blood sugar condition (ie. Diabetes type 1 or 2, reactive or fasting hypo, impaired glucose tolerance, etc.)? reactive hypoglycemia and impaired glucose tolerance (I don't think this affects me much but it's apparently a pre-diabetic condition) 2.) If you haven’t been diagnosed, what are you symptomatic o...
  7. I've never seen kuner's beans but the ingredient listing looks okay... there may be a chance it could be hidden in spices, and you can email the company to double check... if you're just starting out, it's better to be cautious but you'll learn over time what to look out for... you can check these links to learn about ingredients that may contain gluten...
  8. I know there are a lot of us who have to deal with blood sugar issues as well as food intolerances. I figure we might as well see how each of us copes with this. I personally have been trying to figure out for years why I remained symptomatic even on a high protein, eating frequently hypoglycemic diet. Food allergies certainly seem to be a part of that...
  9. I'm free of most common allergens now as well as a number of other foods. I've been on a modified elimination diet since January and have added and removed foods throughout. I'm still trying to pinpoint everything though. joy - what lab did you get your testing kit from... my nutritionist recommended immuno labs in florida, which I might be ordering...
  10. Although some celiacs do look sick, I think many of us don't, which is one of the reason it's harder to get doctors to understand the seriousness of the situation. It also contributes to people questioning your health concerns and thinking you're a hypochondriac. It's better than the alternative though cause I would rather have people question me than look...
  11. is there a particular brand that makes this or is it just a general type of deodorant that a number of companies carry? I looked real fast when I was out shopping last night but didn't see anything resembling "ammonium alum crystal" at the store...
  12. Anyone recommend a deodorant to try? I'd prefer if it's gluten-free just to not worry about that for now... I don't know much about deodorants (like getting one that's aluminum-free, etc.) but I wouldn't mind trying a "healthy" one as long as it works well.. thanks
  13. I agree with most of this, but in my case, I hope it's just a temporary thing, and I'll be able to add back a number of foods once I figure everything out... I've been on an elimination diet for 4-5 months now and thought it would just be a couple weeks or so when I started it... I've only eaten out at a restaurant once in this span, and I was eating out...
  14. I emailed them about the soy, and they said that there is no soy lecithin in either the cinnamon or the tangerine gums. It is however in the peppermint flavor. Patti - the whole foods I go to (middletown) doesn't have it either. But I found it at some random health foods place in little silver. If you go to the glee gum website, they have a Open Original...
  15. francelajoie - I got a laugh out of your driveway incident... I agree with most of the sentiments above, namely IanM... I've had incidents of brain fog for years.. I used to think it was strictly blood-sugar related due to my hypoglycemia but now I"m assuming it was a combination of that with food allergies... when I get brain fog now, it's a sure sign...
  16. last thing I remember intentionally eating with gluten was cheese fries and a nice, fat cheeseburger from windmill... I was trying to increase my gluten intake that day for an antibody blood test the next morning... not that one day of eating any substantial amount of gluten would matter but I figured why not enjoy a good meal..
  17. isn't lecithin and soy lecithin the same thing? is there some other type of lecithin? I figured the gum didn't have lecithin when I saw it was soy free in the original post unless there are multiple flavors...
  18. I've had the rice dream strawberry ice cream... it is okay as an ice cream substitute but only cause I haven't seen anything else I can have in any stores (can't have soy now)... doesn't compare to even a bad ice cream place on the jersey shore though but it's decent for what it is... could be worth a shot if you can't have soy/dairy and want to try something...
  19. I assume it doesn't have aspartame or splenda but does someone who has the gum confirm this? also, does it taste any good and does it last compared to regular gum? I had some peelu gum I tried for a little while that tasted okay but the taste died fast and the gum broke apart... had to stop using it cause soy lecithin was in it anyway..
  20. Open Original Shared Link to a post I made a couple months back for easy-to-prepare protein sources... don't know if any of the suggestions help, but there might be some worth considering... so you can't handle the metagenics rice protein drinks either, huh? I told my nutritionist last week about my concerns about the drink and she was surprised that...
  21. I've only had 4 allergens tested and tested positive for every one of them in one test or another (enterolab for gluten/casein and siga for soy/egg)... I assume I have additional undiagnosed allergies seeing as how I'm 4 for 4 already on what I've had tested... but I also don't think all of these are permanent.. I'm not convinced I can never eat dairy or...
  22. Are there any independent studies that have been conducted regarding enterolab's testing? I'm not an expert in the medical field by any means so I don't know what kind of testing and research like double blind testing or whatnot would typically be conducted to validate a lab's methodology. It would be interesting to see the results from people sending in...
  23. Also has to be free of all common allergens (ie. gluten, casein, soy, eggs, etc.).. Most I've seen including what I used to have don't have the 1:1 ratio and are either 2:1 or 1.5:1 calcium to magnesium... I would like to get a 1:1 or as close to it as possible per my nutritionist... thanks
  24. For those who have reacted to the Puffins cereal, it could be soy if you have an issue with that.. I emailed them a few months back when I saw the vitamin E on the ingredient list and sure enough, there is soy. Here is the email I received: "Thank you for contacting Barbara's Bakery about our Honey Rice Puffins Cereal. Unfortunately, the Honey Rice...
  25. for some reason, it seems as if I react negatively to rice in liquid form the past month or so... I was taking a rice protein vitamin drink (UltraPlus) regularly in December when I first went on an elimination diet with no adverse reactions but have felt off for a couple hours afterwards the last couple times I've tried it... I seem to be alright with rice...
