Bully,
My first thought was candida. The sugars in sweet potatoes are pretty high. I love to make sweet potato oven fries but I never feel good the next day after eating them. I'll get spacey and crabby.

I noticed also it helps to drink lots of water, it keeps the cartilage healthier and plumper. Don't drink to much coffee or alcohol because they'll dehydrate you. Sugar and a hgh carb diet causes alot of inflammation. There are some good books on inflammation. I've read alot of them but its been a few years since and I can't remember a single title.

My lymph nodes are swallon right now too. They seem to get that way when I'm run down. Also a change in seasons always takes it's toll on me. The way I'm feeling right now is if I don't rest and take it easy I'll end up getting a cold. So I'm planning on resting this weekend.
When my kids were small and I go in for a doctors check up the doctor would always say that they were swallon. He would say to me, Tell your husband to help you out and get more rest.
I think my husband thought I was making it up.

was your excess potasium caused only by food? was it because you were low sodium diet? i eat a lot of potassium via avocados and the like, but also eat quite a bit of salt (sea salt and himalayan crystal salt). How can I know if I'm balanced?
I was eating bananas, melons and lara bars as snacks. All these foods are high in potassium. I did the right thing in eating my fruit with yogurt or cottage cheese except with lara bars I ate alone but they do have nuts in them and I usally have them when I know supper is still two hours away but I'm hungry now sort of thing.
I could tell my blood pressure was low because I would get woozy when I'd get up too quickly. I was very tired, I couldn't nap and at night my sleep wasn't that deep restful sleep. I would just sleep light. Adrenal dysfunction can disrupt the body's blood sugar metabolism causing weakness fatigue and a feeling of run down and interfer with normal sleep patterns.
One of the hormones the adrenals make is cortisol and cortisol prevents the loss of sodium to the urine and thus helps maintain blood volume and blood pressure.
Some people will drink a glass of water with a teaspoon of salt in it in the mornings. I'd rather have scrambled eggs with applegate breakfast sausage.
I can tell the difference right away when I add the salt to my diet. If you consider the changes of no processed foods anymore, no grains ( usually always has salt added to the cooking process.) I wasn't having sauces, gravies or soups. And I never ate that much fruit before and now I was having alot of it. In a short amount of time I changed that soduim potassuim ratio to quickly.
I didn't have any grains though yesterday and I slept ok. So we'll see.

I'm still playing around with this grain free thing. I went about 7 days without grain. Just into about 2 days I lost the 2 to 3 lbs of water weight. I did'nt like that to much so I upped my fruit. Going into the 4th day or so I was pretty lethargic and felt drained. Didn't sleep the best. I felt it had to do with my poor functioning adrenals so I looked it up.
Sure enough my potassium was to high. Because of my adrenals I need higher sodium levels. It felt like I was needing water but my body couldn't hold on to it. It would go right through me. I salted all my meals and that helped alittle.
I still wasn't sleeping the best lacked any sustaining energy and it was sunday (day 6) and sunday's are pizza night at our home. I couldn't resist and had the millet/flax pizza crust and the sodium in the sauce, mozzerella cheese and pepperoni was what I needed for the best night's sleep in a week and I had more energy on monday. Gained 3 lbs overnight but thats good.
So for me it's going to be a matter of limiting grains. I have to be careful not to have to many high potassium fruits.
I think I'm going to do a four day rotation on the grains or try a (non gluten) grain one day and not have it again until I've tried then all and record how I do with each of them. I suspect I'm reacting to one of them.
One thing for sure its nice to be off sugar again. That must of had alot to do with how I was feeling to lead me into all this.
Don't think this thread is going to take off but wanted to mention about the pottasium/sodium balance when someone has poor adrenal function in hope it will help someone.

Again I just have to say I feel so much better eating this way its amazing. I just must be genetically predisposed
this way. Grains just have a adverse effect on my gut. I read an interesting report on this also being the case for kids with autism and aspergers. They believe its just in their genes. The same way with celiacs and people with autoimmune dieases.
This is very close to the SCD diet. I made their muffins this morning using ground almonds and coconut. It'll nice to have when I need to grab something. Next time I'm going to lower the oven temp. because they turned alittle to brown.
I'm still using alittle lime juice or some balsamic vinegar which is made from grapes and aged for 12 yrs, for my salad dressing. It works for now I don't know if that will change for me since I love having a big salad as a part of my lunch everyday.
I'm just starting to read again about all the paleo/neanderthal lit. and was reminded about feed-lot beef that you buy at the store. They are fed corn meal spiked with anti-biotics because cows cannot eat corn and survive. They would get bloated and be filled with so much inflammation it would kill them.
Corn is very high in omega 6's. The oil alone has a omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 83 to 1. The highest one. And a diet too high in omega-6's has been linked to various dieases like cardiovascular diease. cancer, and inflammatory and autoimmune diease. I think thats why my joints stopped aching after only acouple days on this diet.
Anyway I'm exciting again because I feel alittle more in control of my health again. I'll have to pop over on the SCD thread to see what I can use.

David Cook is my favorite. He's voice and creativity is awesome. I think the girls have been beaten down by Simon so much they're letting that fear take away from their abilities to perform well. Brooke was shaking towards the end of her song last night. I think Simon does this on purpose. He has David Archuletta already in his mind to win and does his best to sabotoge the girls.

I have to say Pamela's pancake mix is pretty darn good. If you go to Lame Advertisement and look it up it'll have the most reviews I've ever seen allll positive. Even people who are gluten eaters reviewed they like them.
And homemade chocolate chip cookies made from my heartland performance flour blend. If I bring those to a gathering they will go faster then anyone elses deserts. People always want the recipe but I just think its probably the flour blend more then it is the recipe.

About three weeks ago I started getting knee pain and swelling in my right knee. I've had this before but not since I went gluten free. It wasn't going away and it was really hard getting up from a squat position. I decided to go paleo again to see if it would take it away before seeing a doctor.
I've been four days no grain, sugar etc. only meats, veggies, fruits, nuts, olive oil and alittle butter or cream. The pain is almost all gone in that short amount of time. I've let my diet get pretty sloppy eating alot in the way of sugar. Once I allow sweets in my diet I usually spiral down fast. Its like I know its going to end so I better eat all I can.
So like I said I've done the Paleo before but it gets boring but I've never done it with a whole lot of fruit. I think adding fruits will help me since I'm not doing this to lose weight. I do have to watch out for citrus and others that are high in salicylic acids because they'll tend to bother my stomach and intestines. Even cause bloat.
I can't believe how clear my head is. I've been having a hard time keeping my thoughts from wondering. I'm always telling myself "focus" so I'm not like standing with the fridgerator door open wondering why I'm there.
So I'm all hyped about the positive responses and that will carry me through for a couple of weeks but I know it will get hard so I'm hoping this thread will maybe draw more people and incourage one another. Maybe candida people can draw incouragement here.
Also if you want to try but your afraid its to hard don't worry. I expect we'll all be telling about our failures but just to be able to come off grains for even a few days or weeks at a time is something to be proud of.
Nancym, do you post in a paleo group in the low carber forums? I read that ever once in awhile. I start reading there and I'm there for hours. I find it quite interesting. I have to start reading up on the whole diet again and get my info right. Its been over a year since I last did it.

All you can do is try it and see how you feel. I found the best diet for me is eliminating all grains and legumes. In my reading they're very hard on the gut.
There are a few like me that follow a Paleo type diet. I also avoid high oxalate foods or foods high in salicylates.
Both foods in this catagory are alike.
Everyone is different and nobody is right or wrong in the right diet if gluten is not enough. All you can do is ask questions and do alot of reading.

I was shopping in Target yesterday and noticed those foil packed tuna's. On the front it says tuna packed in water but it you read the ingredients its water and vegetable broth. Vegetable broth will probablly have MSG in it and that's why I can't have it. Does it have gluten, who knows, it could have. It could be like barely malt, it's there to enhance the fish flavors.
Maybe someone has called and asked the companies about this. Anyone?

I have a hard time with legumes. Just a hard time digesting them. I've read they're not all that great anyway, their nutrients don't get assimulated and they bind with minerals? (someone help me if this is wrong) So they actually take from you.
With the casein, I have intolerance also but can have butter and alittle bit of whipped cream. So the fat in casein isn't as bad as the protein. I think therefore its more of a lactose intolerance.

Welcome back Ursa ..... I get worse symptoms then anyone in my family when I get the flu. It knocks me down pretty hard.
I'm glad you were able to enjoy the choir music. It sounds like you really appreciate music which I find relaxing and a great stress reliever. Someday I hope to do what you've done and learn to play an instrument.

I read an article on IBS on why they get bloated. It seems if you have problems with a food and it sets off intestinal cramps and diahhrea, that movement (parastalic) is going to push that food out. If there isn't any food or waste to push then air/gas gets sucked up in there instead. So the air/gas will bloat you. So it can just be the contractions going on that is causing the trouble. You could be getting c.c. or you might have another intolerance.

Hello everyone, I am writing in the hope that someone might be able to shed light on my current problem, I was diagnosed with fibro fifteen years ago, over the years I noticed a connection between my diet and the degree of pain I suffer from. Mostly I found that eliminating corn, sugars, msg and other preservatives was benificial, since I have a lot of stomach problems I became more and more convinced that I should also eliminate all grains. Here comes the mystery, after completely eliminating all grain product from my diet for two weeks I did not notice any improvements and decided to reintroduce bread, I have since have had a major flare up of fibro and stomach pain, nausea, gas, pain behind my left scapula , zapping pain in my chest, I thought I was having a heart attack, mostly I never slept all night as even laying on my back made my chest too sore, ulcer meds are not helping, got a bit of relief from gaviston, even my legs were shaky and weak,it has been four days sice and I still suffer, does anyone know if this is coincidence , should I go back to no gluten, how come two weeks off gluten did not help, I was told that three days would make a difference, any feedback would be appreciated, I don't know what to do anymore, I am sixty one years old, maybe it's my heart and I blame it on diet
If I were you I would definetly stay off gluten. Those kind of symptoms are not fun. A two week trial is not long enough to determine if its working. A person your age won't see improvements for at least a year. If grain free is too hard include alittle rice. I've heard some fibro patients being helped by a low oxalate diet. I don't have time to explain it all but there's a thread on it here that has some good links and a good start with information.
Don't give up it may take several trial diets along the way but I would stay away from gluten throughout. The more you read up on gluten the more convinced you'll be with that.

Anyone know of a protein powder out there that is gluten free, dairy free, and sugar free? I need to add more protein to my diet, and would like to add a protein shake before workouts.
Thanks.
A
Nutiva makes a great shake with Hemp protein that I love. You don't have to add anything because they're flavored. I bought the chocolate and the berry pomegranate that I haven't tried yet but the choc. is great. It's sweetened with evaporated cane juice however.
The other mix I use is jarrow formulas brown rice protein. With this one you have to add your own fruit and sweetner. Its just bown rice protein and a natural vanilla flavor.

I was wondering if balancing out the bacteria in gut would help with the rash. Sometimes I put kefir in my daily smoothie but not on a regular basis. I have a lot of inflammation in small bowel and thought daily probiotics or kefir would help everthing. Have read some interesting things about kefir and do feel better when I include it in my diet. Gluten-free a couple months now and did a little experiment over weekend to see if shrimp would aggravate my DH. It sure did. Was careful about Easter dinner, too, but lots of itching today.
My doctor wants me to take Niaspan for cholesterol. I did some background on it and niacin is supposed to help skin rashes. Anyone heard anything about that? I'm holding off on starting it. Big chicken. Plus taking a daily aspirin with it might not be the best thing for my stomach right now. So for now using lotion from dermatologist which helps some.
If your taking aspirin daily and using fruit in your smoothie it could be a salicylate sensitivity. I'd do a quick google/search on it just to make your ok with them. I've had kefir before and I agree its great because you can drink it.

Hello All,
Strange request, but long story short my Mom's got celiac and she's out of town. One of our family friends' grandson was just diagnosed and needs to know where to go to get food, baked goods, etc. I can't get a hold of mama and I don't want this poor guy to starve! If anyone or everyone could kindly give me a few places I know that Mrs. B's grandbaby would be very appreciative. Feel free to just email me @ kellyhuiskamp@mac.com
Thanks so Much!
Kelly
Festival Foods has gluten free foods in their natural food aisle and freezer. At least the one in Green bay does. They carry Kinnikinnick breads, donuts, and other baked goods in the freezer. Kinnikinnick also sells mixes. Bob Red mill has mixes that are gluten free and cake mixes from a couple places that are reliable. Gluten Free Pantry has great bread mixes that I buy all the time. They also have pie crust and corn muffin mix.
I buy rice chips there from Lundbergs which also makes rice cakes that are good for anything you would put on a slice of bread. Lundberg is known for their rice and I eat it almost everyday.
There is a great pasta made by Tinkyada that everyone loves even gluten eaters. They sell it there along with a couple of other brands. They sell gluten free flour by Pamela's. I love her brownie mix and pancake mix.
You can also buy these things from Lame Advertisement. if they want to go that route. Sometimes the shipping is free. There are Amy's products and some of her things are gluten free but people have been known to react to them. A good thing to do is start out by cooking your own meals using the basics; fruits, veggies, meat, and rice before you start using the processed foods.
Tell them to buy new cutting boards, teflon pans, toaster, colander, because gluten can be stuck in cracks and crevises and you just can't get them clean enough.
This should help until your mom gets home. She'll know should be a big help.

I understand your reaction, we all have them. About a week ago I had a meltdown over cashew butter. I have an intolerance to peanut butter (amoung other things) I miss it but found out I can tolerate cashew butter which is one of my favorite treats on nut thins or rice cakes. Its expensive but worth it and the good thing, I don't have to worry about gluten from three others in my family dipping their knives into it.
I eat it almost everyday so I'm aware how much is used so when I opened it up and found big scoops of it gone I ran under a bright light to see if their were crumbs in it. Then noticing how much was gone I was furious because it costs so much more then peanut butter and being aware of that I make it last as long as possible.
Hence my meltdown which looking back probably looked over the top. Oh yeah everyone is now afraid to eat mom's cashew butter. I'm sure we all of have stories. Don't beat yourself up, I think making certain bounderies is good and if they don't understand its because they don't suffer the consequences. Maybe they have to give something up but it's nothing like what you've had to give up.
They'll be fine.

Another thought is the wheat breads were soaking up the acids before. Have you ever noticed if you dropped bread in water it will almost double in size as it soaks up moisture? Also if you had been eating bread with some whole grain in it you'd be missing the fiber which helps to move things out.
I remember we were told to eat soda crackers to releave morning sickness when pregnant for the same reasons.
