Need help interpreting results
trents replied to Lina5's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, Lina5! You have two celiac antibody levels that are positive: tTG-IGA and Deaminated Gliadin IGA. The tTG-IGA is the centerpiece of celiac antibody testing and is the single most commonly ordered tests by physicians. It combines good sensitivity with good specificity and is relatively inexpensive to run. The Deaminated Gliadin IGA... -
Welcome to the forum Skellig! Unfortunately, your doctor ordered only the tTG-IGA antibody test. Some people who actually have celiac disease have atypical immune system responses and are negative for tTG-IGA but will be positive for other antibody tests. Also, low total IGA can drive tTG-IGA results downward. Another option would be to order...

So, Dr. Fine believes that gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is or can be preliminary to celiac disease, that it is not a distinct condition. Correct?

"When I get out of bed in the morning I’m cripple for the first few steps and then it starts to ease unless I put a lot of weight on my toes (ie. If I squat). " This sounds like plantar fasciitis to me. -
A diagnosis of NCGS would ensue from: 1. First getting tested for celiac disease resulting in negative test test results (serum antibody and/or endoscopy with biopsy). 2. Improvement of symptoms when all gluten is removed from the diet and lifestyle. Not just most of it, but all of it which would include cross contamination and other sources such...

This is true.

Welcome to the forum, Veralenn! The Mayo Clinic Guidelines for the pretest gluten challenge is the daily consumption of two slices of wheat bread (or the equivalent) for 6-8 weeks leading up to the day of the blood draw. How much your departure from daily regular consumption of gluten affected your test results is difficult to say. We also don't know...

Thanks, Scott. The general impression I got from the article is that there are a lot more shades of gray with regard to gluten disorders than we are accustomed to thinking about. He seems to be saying the actual research doesn't quite fit our neatly defined little categories for these things such that individual cases have quite a bit of variation genetically...

Low Ferritin
trents replied to Angela1287's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Angela, are you currently taking any vitamin supplements? Serum vitamin and mineral testing may be pretty useless while on supplements. I think the recommendation for accurate results is to discontinue supplementation for like two months. Otherwise, you are measuring what is floating around in the blood rather than what is actually getting to the cells and... -
Just to clarify, if you decide to go back for more thorough serum antibody testing, go back to eating significant amounts of gluten for two months and then I would ask for: 1. Total serum IGA, 2. tTG-IGA, 3. Deamidated gliadin peptide (DGP IgA and IgG). NCGS shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not damage the small bowel villi...

The tTG-IGA test is the centerpiece of antibody testing for celiac disease but there are others that need to be run since some people who do have celiac disease produce an atypical immune response that does not trigger a postitive tTG-IGA. Not sure about the AGA-IGG. Not familiar with that terminology expression but it may be the same as Deamidated gliadin...

Wheatwacked, I think the discussion was about hiatal hernias, not abdominal wall hernias.

From his interview: "Which is going to mean, if you have two celiac genes or two gluten-sensitive genes, or a celiac gene and a gluten-sensitive gene that every child you have will have at least one of them." He mentions "gluten-sensitive genes" but does not state which ones they may be. At least I don't discern that from the article. Is the making a...

Welcome to the forum, Michele! The two genes that have been identified (so far) with risk of developing celiac disease are HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8: https://nationalceliac.org/celiac-disease-questions/celiac-genes/ Researchers suspect there may be more genes involved and are actively researching this. As far as I known, there have been no genes...

Yes, EvieJean, we can help with that. Please post your antibody test results, including the reference ranges for negative/positive. Different labs used different reference ranges.

I think you're right.

Good words, Awol! I would like to add that while it is true that the celiac experience typically involves changes in relationships, it doesn't have to be all or nothing for those among our family/friend base who aren't willing to adjust with you. It may mean you will not be able to participate in food events with them but you can still have them as part...

Low Ferritin
trents replied to Angela1287's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, Angela1287! Your ferritin levels are within normal range according to this: https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.aspx?contenttypeid=167&contentid=ferritin_blood. But maybe the lab used in your case was going by different units. Can you post the reference ranges they were using? What about hemoglobin and hematocrit... -
As far as the continuation of the elevated tTG-IGA, there are some things besides gluten and dairy that can cause that. NSAIDs and at least one blood pressure med can cause elevated antibodies. I think there are some other diseases that can too, like Crohn's. But I have to ask you, how are you getting tested for antibodies every 15 days? Are you doing...

Is it actually that bad?

It strikes me that this may be relevant to the controversy surrounding the Digiorno "washed" wheat crust gluten free pizza. -
Is it actually that bad?
trents replied to Hnm44's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Welcome to the forum, Hnm44! There is not a quick answer to your question as the issue really isn't the concentration of gluten in the food you eat but the total amount of gluten consumed per day. The 20ppm limit of the USA FDA and the 10ppm limit of some of the "certified gluten free" certifying bodies obscures the fact that it is actually the total... -

trents replied to Lauren0204's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Lauren, in the celiac population there is a tendency to develop intolerance to some other foods that do not contain gluten. Chief among them are dairy products but also oats and egg intolerance are not uncommon. It may be because of the damage to the small bowel villi or because the proteins found in these other foods mimic the effect of gluten in some people... -
Celiac Disease Blood Antibody Tests
trents commented on Scott Adams's article in Frequently Asked Questions About Celiac Disease
Cheryl, I agree with Wheatwacked about the nutritional deficiencies. This goes hand in had with celiac disease. The inflammation it produces in the small bowel lining damages the villi and can greatly reduce the efficiency of nutrient absorption. Which celiac disease blood test or tests were run? There are several that can be run.- 62 comments
