Hi Kendra From what I can see your thyroid results are within the range that has been set by the laboratory that did your blood tests. Not every lab uses the exactly the same ranges and this is why someone may say that there thyroid peroxidase antibody test should be below 20 - it varies from country to country. Having said that and refering to the...

ARCHIVED Wheat Starch
Ruth52 replied to chrissy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I stay clear of products that contain wheat starch. I know that i reacted to marshmellows and the only ingredient on the packet that was suspicious was the wheat starch. -
ARCHIVED Peripheral Neuropathy
Ruth52 replied to faegan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sorry if this question sounds basic but what is peripheral neuropathy. -
ARCHIVED Epileptic Auras An Ah Ha Moment
Ruth52 replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is so interesting and maybe gives me an answer. I have never had a seizure that I know of, but I occasionally find that I smell something strange, it is an acrid sort-of burning something smell. I had a cyst removed from my cerebellum eighteen years ago and have been taking anti-seizure medication ever since. The medication wasn't prescribed to stop... -
I don't know how compromised your immune system would be. But you may find that now you have taken the gluten out of your diet, your body has more resistance because it is not having to fight the gluten invaders. Just my thoughts!

ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Ruth52 replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've tried a few things from the Woolies Freefrom range. The chocolate cake mix was a disappointment, it has a strange taste, sort of more caramel than chocolate. I find the Basco cake mix range as good as any home made cake I have made - their chocolate cake is really good and I just add bananas to the vanilla cake mix and it makes a great banana cake... -
ARCHIVED Annalise Roberts - Choc Chip Cookies
Ruth52 replied to 2Boys4Me's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
In the recipe it says to use 'vegetable shortening' not butter or margarine. What are the ingredients of vegetable shortening? In Australia the only vegetable shortending we have is made from hardened coconut oil and soya bean lecithin (brand name Copha), I couldn't imagine beating it with sugar and it becoming fluffy! If someone could give me the... -
ARCHIVED Anybody End Up With Grave's Disease?
Ruth52 replied to tailz's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The rash that SueC is talking about will have been as a result of her daughter taking Methimazole. A bad reaction to the drug will cause aching joints, a rash and a sore throat, I think this can happen because, in large doses, the drug does something with the white blood cells. -
ARCHIVED Anybody End Up With Grave's Disease?
Ruth52 replied to tailz's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I hope everything turns out well for your daughter, she is so young and must feel absolutely awful. I was very aware while I was on the medication that it could cause adverse reactions. If the medication had not worked for me I would have had surgery. I'm not sure about RAI - from what I have been told radiation will eventually kill the thyroid but... -
ARCHIVED Anybody End Up With Grave's Disease?
Ruth52 replied to tailz's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in 2004 and treated with medication. At the time I was given the choice of RAI, surgery or medication, luckily the surgeon I saw suggested that I try medication first to see if the GD would go into remission. I stayed on the medication for 14 months and now have normal thyroid levels. I know of others with graves disease... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)

I grew up watching Peter Brock drive, I never thought he would be killed in a race - can't even remember him having a bad accident. I guess even Peter Perfect had his limits - a very sad end to an era. -
ARCHIVED Test Results
Ruth52 replied to nikki182's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I haven't had an official diagnosis, but when I need to ask questions about any food I am about to eat I say I am celiac - it just makes life easier. But I look at it this way, if someone told me they were vegetarian I wouldn't expect them to give me an explanation about their diet. I wouldn't expect them to produce results from a test that showed that... -
ARCHIVED What Am I Doing Wrong?
Ruth52 replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I cook my bread in steel bread tins rather than aluminium ones. Apparently the aluminium tins will cook the outside too quickly and leave the inside undercooked. -

Cross contamination is the big problem with oats. I did find some biodynamic oats that were supposed to have been milled in an oats-only environment but I wasn't willing to risk it (I don't like oats that much anyway). -
Because chick peas are a legume they can make you gassy until your body gets used to them. I use Besan (chick pea) flour in my cooking and I found that my body took a little bit of time to become re-adjusted to the different flours etc. I was using. It is worth persisting with different types of foods/flours/nuts/seeds. I look at my gluten intolerance...

ARCHIVED Metamucil Question
Ruth52 replied to orhs66's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I buy psyllium husks and sprinkle a teaspoon full on my breakfast and also add them to some of my cooking. Metamucil is just psyllium husks with additives; I don't need the additives so I just go to the original source. Much cheaper. As with Metamucil, when using psyllium husks you need to drink extra water to help bulk them up. -
ARCHIVED How Do I Lose Weight When I'm Tired Al The Time?
Ruth52 replied to munchkinette's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think you need to be patient. Your body needs to build up its stamina and that can take up to twelve months. You probably have also lost lean muscle and that also takes time to rebuild. I know it is very frustrating but I am sure it will improve. Try keeping a food diary and keep note of the quality of the food you are eating. You may be eating to... -
ARCHIVED Is Citric Acid Safe?
Ruth52 replied to rutland's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is what "The Chemical Maze" says about Citric Acid. ' Regarded as safe in foods; has a number of health benefits; may provoke symptoms in those who react to MSG; may aggrevate the herpes simplex virus; in cosmetic use it may cause exfoliative dermatitis; eye and skin irritation.' From that I think they are saying it is safe in foods, but if you... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Ruth52 replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi everyone, The weather is great down here (Victoria), spring is just around the corner. I've bought three gluten free cookbooks and I am trying recipes from all of them. - Changing Habits Changing Lives, Wheat-Free World and Gluten-Free Baking Classics. Some of my attempts are ending up in the bin, but that can happen with any new recipe. The only... -
ARCHIVED Teen Fights For Right To Pick Cancer Treatment....
Ruth52 replied to AndreaB's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I agree that it the cancer treatment should be a family decision. Cancer is fought by the whole family not just the individual who has the disease. I'm a firm advocate for childhood immunisation. I watched by baby brother suffer through whooping cough. I would never willingly make a decision that could put my child at risk of suffering like he did.... -
ARCHIVED Trouble With Oils?
Ruth52 replied to Jarrett's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have found that cold pressed Macadamia oil is easily digested and doesn't have any after taste. -
ARCHIVED Misscarriages Due To Untreated Celiac
Ruth52 replied to Kels's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
After two normal pregnancies, I had two successive miscarriages (25 weeks & 12 weeks). Now looking back I attribute them to Graves Disease (overactive thyroid) which, although it was only diagnosed two years ago, I have probably had for at least thirty. Quite possibly I was also gluten intolerant way back then, but with all the grief & frustration... -

I found the Tamari soy sauce in the health food section at Safeway, also saw it in health food section in the Coles Supermarket. Ruth -
I can really understand your frustration. Life as you knew it will never be the same again! But don't be disheartened. There is a whole world of new and interesting food just waiting for you. Ruth

ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Ruth52 replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi Aussie Peg, The Lansell Cottages bread mix comes out really well. The only adjustment I make to their breadmix is to add a heaped teaspoon of Xanthum gum. It makes up really well in the bread maker but I think it would be just as good done with an electric beater and cooked in the oven I've also been trying to find sorghum flour and the only supplier...
