  1. It makes sense. He has bloodwork while on gluten and wants to see the change after a gluten free diet. And maybe he wants to test vitamins in the gluten free state. I think he's giving you time to become gluten free. Dive right in.
  2. On the other hand, think of all the new unprocessed foods you can try now that you are not bloated by all the "filler" foods made with cheap wheat. It is kind of like moving to a new culture where your old favorites are not available, so you find new favorites. Some people go through a mourning period at the loss of a best friend.
  3. Hi Sheri, welcome to Celiac.com. Many people have weight gain, others have weight loss. If your GI recognized Celiac Disease from the cat scan it seems that she has experience and knowledge, so you are in good hands. She may want to run a Celiac blood test and endoscopy to verify. Celiac is an autoimmune response to the gluten in wheat, rye and barley. It...
  4. It is my understanding that unless looking specifically for Celiac Disease and picking the right spot for a biopsy, it can easily be missed in a standard endoscopy. How many have posted here with "definitely not Celiac" only to be diagnosed 10 years later? When my son was diagnosed it was finally seen on his third endoscopy. Just the diagnosis of...
  5. As a just weaned infant my son born in 1976 suddenly bloated up. I was shocked when I looked at him and remembered newpaper photos of Biafran babies shortly after the Biafran Relief contracted for supplies of the new "green" wheat instead of the rice they had been buying. Convinced he was not "just colicky", and it was not maternal stress (numerous recommendations...
  6. something to check is if they are adding Choline to the TPN.
  7. NALFD has been linked to Choline deficiency. Add to the fact that most Americans don't eat enough choline (4 eggs or 15 oz steak or 10 cups of cooked broccoli a day) choline is absorbed in the small intestine so the effect of Celiac Disease caused malabsorption syndrome added to not enough choline in the diet could cause significant effects to your liver...
  8. Famous last words. Follow his advice and stay sick or do GFD without antagonizing your doctor and see what happens. You still need the doctor for your TD1. Eventually he may notice the improvement and ask what you are doing to get better. Doctors generally don't care what you eat. Their response to me when I say I am gluten free is "well, everyone has preferences...
  9. The Celiac High Risk was my own notes, based on information I read. Iodine and potassium even though rarely mentioned with celiac disease are absorbed by the small intestine/duodenum and so would be affected.
  10. If you've had a partial gastrectomy, you may be able to get enough vitamins and minerals from your diet by eating foods that are high in nutrients – in particular, foods high in iron, calcium, and vitamins C and D. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/gastrectomy/recovery/ Funny that article by the NHS does not mention B12. I understand the no oral B12...

  12. Go with his diagnosis and ask for a nutrition consult familiar with Celiac/NCGS. Either way the treatment is GFD plus resolve vitamin deficiencies. You could push for a biopsy, but in my opinion, it won't change your treatment. It will expose you to a procedure requiring anesthesia and the low risk of a tear and more costs. Celiac Disease does sound...
  13. Iodine is absorbed in the small intestine. If you are reaching the minimum RDA like most Americans and have malabsorption syndrome (from Celiac) you will be deficient.
  14. Try 100% Grass Fed milk. It tastes better and does not irritate my stomach the way regular milk does. Even picky eaters will eat when presented with food they like. As a picky eater, please don't make eating one food contingent on another. I learned at an early age to just say no when asked if I was hungry.
  15. Even if your tests are negative, who is more right, your gut or a lab test. If the gluten free diet and vitamins help enough to keep you off IBS medications, that's pretty indicative that you have a problem with wheat. Treatment for Celiac and NCWS (NCGS) is the same. Gluten Free Diet and resolve any vitamin and mineral deficiencies. In addition to the vitamins...
  16. Where have we heard this before?🙃 I think 10 years is the average from complaint to correct diagnosis. It is good to have physical evidence biopsy or blood work but your body is already telling you. Whether you choose to continue eating gluten while waiting for tests or start GFD, vitamins are the key to recovery.
  17. There are around three hundred symptoms associated with Celiac Disease and your descriptions match. Has your doctor checked your vitamin D level?

  19. After 30 years of uncontrollable alcoholism, one week of gluten free ended my addiction. 8 years later on GFD and I can take a drink for social occasions but generally prefer not to. I had a list of 18 different symptoms that improved with the gluten free diet. Trust the evidence of your health diaries. You might find Dr Fuhrman's books enlightening, a cardiologist...
  20. That's the vitamin D talking. They call it Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) but I think it is the vitamin D deficiency. I had a similar response after a few days of 10,000 IU of vitamin D. The essential vitamins and minerals are required for your systems to function. If you don't eat them through food then you need to continue to supplement. You are...
  21. There is no fish or bacon that is vegan.
  22. I found it was the undiagnosed Celiac Disease that triggered my alcoholism. I drank for 30 years to alleviate pain and fatigue. The obvious diagnosis was stop drinking and smoking and you will improve. Never happened. After less than a week of GFD I bought a bottle of Saki and did not drink it. Before GFD I had no problem finishing 500 ml vodka or saki every...
  23. It impedes the profit margin The damaged villi don't absorb vitamins well and eventually can get to the point of malnutrition and misdiagnosis. You may have multiple vitamin and mineral deficiencies but these three are a place to start. Start taking Phosphatidyl Choline. Choline an essential nutrient that is absorbed in the small intestine so...
