  1. Understanding the heart-healthy benefits of potassium; https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/high-blood-pressure/changes-you-can-make-to-manage-high-blood-pressure/how-potassium-can-help-control-high-blood-pressure There is no upper limit for dietary potassium but some BP meds can increase hyperkalemia risk. That may be where the story about potassium...
  2. Should be. Growing up iodine was used as a dough modifier. Each slice was 100 mcg and a glass of milk was 100. 300 mcg per sandwich and glass of milk. The US population intake is half what it was in 1970. It was left out of the nutrition database. The first thing I noticed when I started one sheet of nori a day was better muscle tone in my chest...
  3. I know the feeling. They get defensive I'll bet. You best effort might be advocating a nutritionist specializing in Celiac Disease. The next step after GFD is addressing any essential vitamin and mineral deficiencies caused by the damaged villi in the small intestine. Doctors are not taught vitamins, nutritionists are.
  4. Trust your gut. First try the thiamine >300 mg /day, you will know in a few days. Cheese will take longer. Are you making 4700 grams of potassium a day? What's your iodine intake?
  5. From the Merck Manual https://www.merckmanuals.com/professional/gastrointestinal-disorders/malabsorption-syndromes/celiac-disease Unfortunately, upon diagnosis many will prescribe the gluten free diet and downplay the vitamin and mineral deficiencies, other than admonish you to eat a "healthy diet". Without the addictive aspects of...
  6. Yes. The hot shower stretching and GFD solved the fasciitis. That was back in 2014 so I don't remember the exact sequence, but the showers helped even before GFD. Enlarged Prostate which has bothered me, sometimes more sometimes less, since I was first diagnosed at 21 years old has completely resolved. By 3 months GFD I no longer needed those Prostate Formulas...
  7. Most of the lactase we need as adults is made by our gut microbes. While quick pickles (pickled with vinegar) carry the name and taste like fermented foods, they don't have the pre and pro biotics, vinegar sterilizes them. Homemade dill pickles are easy and helps. Commercial milk has more omega 6 than grass fed so it aggravates inflammation, while grass fed...
  8. I just keep it simple and take them all at the same time and write it down in my food book so I don't forget and skip a day or double dose. I figure my gut will take what it needs and leave the rest, as it would from a normal meal, since my gut is acting pretty normal these days.
  9. In my mind this supersedes any test that indicates you are not. Now to convince the doctors. Did your skin also improve with the GFD?
  10. Look for one that has 100% DV or more. Most multivitamins don't have more than a token amount of what you need. In my opinion 10% DV of 20 vitamins is just a good way for them to make money. The foot roller does the same as a tennis ball, gently stretches, but the hot shower helped me more. For a while I would wake at night and crawl to the bathroom...
  11. This helped me even before GFD: A long hot shower, hot water down my back and back of the legs while doing shallow knee bends (safety bar for stability) and other easy stretches for back and legs and arms. It's not just the plantar fascia but also the Achilles tendon that contracts and sounds like even your back will benefit. The damp heat and mild stretching...
  12. 1800% RDA of Thiamine is roughly 22 grams. I was getting 6 grams a day (500% RDA). I start shivering at 78F. To my surprise when I tried 500 mg B1 (41600%) for a few days my ambient temp comfort zone (the temp I turn on the heat because I am shivering) dropped from 78 degrees F to 69F. A sure sign to me of increased energy. I am now at 1000 mg a...
  13. When I was a kid they almost always put a sprig of parsley on the plates when I ate in a diner. No one knew why, just to make it look nice. I don't think they do anymore, but now I know why. 10 mg fresh parsley has 100% RDA of vitamin K.
  14. Osteopenia is scary. I was diagnosed with it last year, but in addition to Celiac I also am old, smoke and take prednisolone, all other risk factors. There are drugs like Fosimax but the side effects exceed the benefits, I think. Some research shows the benefit of these drugs only work in combination with vitamin D and calcium and is only slightly better...
  15. As far as food choices you want to avoid anything that has wheat, gluten or rye. Read labels. The good thing about meat, vegetables, fruit, leafy greens, and beans is that the labels are too tiny to write on so there is no added wheat. Apples, steak, potatoes, eggs not processed, good to eat. Boxes and bottles and bags: always read the labels. A 10 second...
  16. Sibo, IBS and colitis could be symptoms of Thiamine deficiency. Depression and overactive autoimmune response could be not enough vitamin D. Though >30 ng/ml is enough to avoid rickets, the anti-autoimmune and anti-depression effects seem to work better at blood plasma levels around 80 ng/ml. Make sure you are eating between 150 mcg and 1100...
  17. Your post sounds like something I might have written myself a few years ago. With all your symptoms it amazes me (but doesn't surprise me!) that multiple doctors find nothing wrong. Read the "Gluten Centric Culture". It will help you realize that those who say "it's in your head" are wrong. You don't need a doctor to tell you that what you eat is...
  18. Other studies have shown that folate requirements are inversely related to choline status. It was a sad day when they convinced us that eggs and red meat are bad. I think it was a diversion from that fact that grain fed meat and eggs alters the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio in our food, increasing inflammation. Fish oil has more omega-3. Maybe it is just a coincidence...
  19. Congratulations! https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2009/08/low-choline-levels-in-pregnant-women-raise-babies-risk-for-brain-and-spinal-cord-defects-study-shows.html The RDA for choline in Pregnancy is 450 mg per day. "The DV for choline is 550 mg for adults"; "In adults, the average daily choline intake from foods and beverages is 402 mg in...
  20. Good article. I found this little gem buried in the middle. I am a long way from ESRD. I remembered that in addition to the vinegar and sour candies I would sometimes get an itchy feeling in my glands from canned tuna. I think it was only water packed tuna, not oil packed.
  21. I do get a weird feeling in that area sometimes if there is vinegar in what I eat. Also sometimes with sour candies. Can't say if it was my vitamin regimen or if I am better at avoiding vinegar but it hasn't bothered me in a while. I have stage 2 CKD and in January got worse to stage 3. I am hoping it was the weight loss and will prove temporary....
  22. Despite several years of orthodonture as a kid my bite was still off. I had TMJ that started as an adult. I thought it was due to anxiety clenching. When I was 45 a childhood filling in the middle molar left side came loose (can we say don't chew gum?) and through procrastination the tooth broke apart and had to be extracted. It left a space that against...
  23. The only for sure way to tell if wheat, rye and barley are a problem for you is to abstain from them. You will notice improvement almost overnight. The endoscopy will make your insurance company happy. There are over 300 symptoms that have shown improvement with GFD. Look at books by Dr Fuhrman, Dr Davis, Dr Hymen and Dr Amen. I found them helpful. They...
