ARCHIVED Went To The Gastroenterologist And Now Im Confused And Embarrassed
penguin replied to jodikris's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As some nurses told me a few weeks ago when I was visiting my grandfather in the hospital, MD has come to stand for Medical Diety. Even dieties can be dipsh*ts. Tell him to go ahead to write a paper, because then he would have to provide you with medical care at no cost for his research, and then he would be the laughing stock of the GI community... -
ARCHIVED Wow...mouth Ulcers
penguin replied to Celia the Celiac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Most tree nuts (but not almonds and macadamia nuts) do it for me, as well as some dark chocolate... There's just something in them that doesn't agree with my mouth -

yogurt is one of the things that my mom has always shoved down my throat when I had a stomach problem to replace the good bacteria. Now grown, I see that my body likes the good bacteria and I like to give them a home in my war torn digestive tract That's the only thing I do, probiotically, because I'm afraid of any vitamin like pills

ARCHIVED I Just Died And Went To gluten-free Heaven!

Not to get off subject, but... LA Weightloss is great! I've done it twice, and still use some of the tips. It may be a challenge gluten-free, make sure you get some gluten-free protein bars (like the think thin) because LA weightloss pushes those not only because they want to make more money off of you, but on the diet you only get like, 800 calories... -

Tinkyada is rice, but don't judge till you try it! I made baked mac and cheese with it the other night and it was excellent! I really couldn't tell the difference between that and glutened pasta. I made spaghetti with another brand and it wasn't so good... -
ARCHIVED Where The Heck Did This Rash Come From?
penguin posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So recently, I've been getting a little rash on the back of my neck, behind my ears, and below my bottom lip, though they don't seem related. The neck rash has 4 small button sized splotches below the hairline in an upside-down trapezoid shape, and it's kind of itchy. The nape of the neck is itchy, too. The one behind my ears is almost gone but... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Crackers

I'm in love with the Blue Diamond Nut Thins, the almond original and the almond ranch. I haven't tried the others because I'm allergic to pecans. And rice cakes are awesome and I hope I don't get tired of them -
ARCHIVED Trying To Understand Celiac Test Results...?
penguin replied to vita1978's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Personally, my blood test results came back similar. Everything was perfectly normal (or low even!) except for the IgG, which was high. My doctor is taking the "duh" approach, if the gluten free diet works, you have it, if it doesn't you don't. She didn't feel such an invasive test as the biopsy was necessary, especially since I had one once before for another... -
ARCHIVED celiac disease Is Big Time News!
penguin replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Publications & Publicity
Heck, for all we know, this whole fiasco could be an acid test, and McDonald's is seeing what would happen if there was an ingredient change or somesuch. A little conspiracy theorist, but you never know But I'll bet ten bucks that's what the rest of the restaurant industry is taking it as, an acid test. -
Yeeeah...those ulcers from long-term overdosing are not terribly fun. Especially if your GI doc misdiagnoses you because you had an abcessed tooth and taking lots of motrin gave you the tiniest of ulcers... BE CAREFUL OUT THERE! Also, be careful about Tylenol, because it's hell on your liver...

ARCHIVED celiac disease Is Big Time News!
penguin replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Publications & Publicity
My problem is that the lawsuits that are going on are poor lawsuits. They don't make anyone look good, least of all the Celiac community. If they were intelligent lawsuits, maybe. It's very nice of Mc Donald's to post a gluten-free menu, and while I am miffed at them for the fry fiasco, it all comes down to personal responsibility. If you fed your kid... -

Open Original Shared Link That's the site for gluten-free biscotti someone else posted (sorry I don't remember who) My sister has used biscotti like a holland rusk (not celiac, she just had a teething toddler at a coffeeshop ) But the baby liked it! -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Bakeries

I just came back from my friendly neighborhood gluten-free bakery and they ship: Open Original Shared Link I never tried them before today, but their white bread is yummy (almost edible without toasting ) and the pumpkin muffin ain't too bad either... I can attest that their other stuff at least looks good, I can only afford so much baked... -
Open Original Shared Link This says it's gluten-free. I believe it's made by the same company as Tylenol, and I'm pretty sure their products are gluten-free. Also, the motrin website says it's corn starch Open Original Shared Link Your stomach is probably screwed up because of the ibuprofen itself. It gave me an ulcer after taking a lot of...

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Crackers
penguin replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Biscotti is an extremely crunchy, mildly sweet cookie from Italy that is traditionally dunked in coffee. That's why it's so crunchy, in fact, so it can stand up to the coffee. I've seen it given to toddlers like a holland rusk so that they can kind of munch on it slowly. As long as you get biscotti in smaller pieces, they should like it. -
ARCHIVED Recipe For Cake Doughnuts
penguin replied to Jenn2005's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Personally, as a southern trained cook, I don't use a thermometer for my frying. I set my electric stovetop to about a 6 with shortening and that's perfect for frying chicken-fried steak (gonna have to figure out how to make that gluten-free ) Anyhoo, without a thermometer, I would just drop a tiny bit of batter into hot oil to test. If it doesn't... -
ARCHIVED Got Lab Results, Could They Be Wrong?
penguin replied to SuzieQ's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well, either way, you feel better, right? That's a huge something, don't you think? Also, the small intestine is ~22ft long, there may be damage further down the line that the endoscope missed. Or, you might just be intolerant, which is about the same as Celiac, only without the damage. There are plenty of people on here that have had negative biopsies... -
Congratulations! All you can do is make sure to eat right, take care of yourself, and make sure you're getting enough vitamins. Miscarriages are awful, but it's nature's way of stopping something that's going wrong in the pregnancy. Also, if you look at the statistics, most people don't have a problem getting pregnant again. Hope everything goes...

ARCHIVED Aaaagh! So Careful For So Long Then Drank Beer...

Also my worst nightmare! I actually had a dream that I ate a bowl of fruit loops last night and had a mid-dream panic attack! Hopefully cgilsing is right and it won't be so bad since you spit most of it out I'm glad that I don't like beer, and that a good margarita is gluten free -

I have that kind of thing too, and I'm also on an anti-spaz, though I try to take it only if I need it. I would guess that you're not totally healed yet, and your body has to figure out how to be normal again. If you went through having constant D for years, it may take longer than expected to get back to normal. I'm right there with you! Normalcy is...

ARCHIVED Gluten Accident At School On Friday
penguin replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you can't volunteer, how about having your kid wear a special shirt or hat on party days to help flag the child for the crazed teachers? The hat thing would be especially helpful if the school rule is no hats allowed and she got special permission, then they couldn't miss her. Otherwise a crazy bright shirt might help.
