Georgie, everything you say makes sense to me except for this--I was diagnosed via symptoms, and tests, including the TSH, and we found the right dosage via the TSH--and I felt so MUCH better for 15 years, how could it be useless? Is it possible that there's a large subset, maybe of celiacs, or maybe we all have something else in common as yet undiscovered...

ARCHIVED Horrible Biopsy Experience
Fiddle-Faddle replied to wonkabar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you do leave that doctor, I would recommend writing a very calm, polite letter telling him exactly how awful you felt during the procedure and why, and explaining that that is why, no matter how skilled he is technically, you are looking for another doctor. Then at least, he doesn't have the excuse that he doesn't realize this, and he won't do it to another... -

Jessica, what kind of flour do you use for the hot fudge cake? Do you need to add xanthan gum or make any other adaptations? -
ARCHIVED We Did The Biopsy....thank Goodness It Is Over
Fiddle-Faddle replied to LauraW's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
How awful for you, but as long as she is fine now, there is no need to feel guilty. It does seem a bit strange, that the doctor didn't really see anything unusual but still think she has celiac--obviously he didn't need to do the biopsy to arrive at that conclusion. But, as you said, at least he got a look around to rule out anything else. I... -

Yes, I tried microwaving them and heating them in the frying pan. I have the huge package, maybe the're getting old? Do they need to be refrigerated? -

ARCHIVED Kids gluten-free Recipes Help
Fiddle-Faddle replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My kids are major pasta eaters, so I just make Tinkyada elbows and make a cheese sauce: 3 Tablespoons of butter, 1 1/2 cups milk (whatever kind you can tolerate), 2 Tablespoons of cornstarche dissolved in a litttle more milk, and 2 cups of grated sharp cheddar cheese. They also like the above with a pound of browned ground meat and a 15-oz can of tomato... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Andrea, for fruit spread you can make your own freezer jam, using thawed frozen strawberries, sugar, and powdered pectin (I use sure-jell). It's not like regular canning--you're storing the jars in the freezer til ready to use. I usually was my jars in the dishwasher right before making the jam. I know with 4 children you have no time, but maybe you... -

Maybe if you sat your mom down and said, "Look I think I've found the answer to our problems, and it's going to be a lot easier than it sounds, and we're going to feel so much BETTER!!!" Or maybe she has to see you feeling better first? Oh, dear. I swear, bull-headed parents are SO much worse than bull-headed children! Oh, well, take care of yourself... -
ARCHIVED Toddler Sleeping Issues
Fiddle-Faddle replied to AmyTopolski's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sometimes sleep issues have nothing to do with diet. My oldest son did not sleep through the night until he was 8 (and that was when we borrowed the neighbor's dog, who slept all night with him!), but when he was 4, he did learn to come into our room very quietly and get into the little bed we set up for him in the corner.. Our second slept through the... -

Oh, dear--here you are asking for help, and we are all giving you stressful answers! Sounds like your mom is in major denial, but I'm guessing that denial is a very common and human reaction at first--especially if deep inside, she is #1) suspecting that she might have celiac herself and 2) she is probably feeling horribly guilty that she never realized... -

I was told (wrongly, perhaps?) that even with the right dosage, we Hashimoto's patients continue to produce anti-thyroid antibodies, just as we celiacs continue to produce IgG even when we are not eating any gluten. -

ARCHIVED Parents Begging Not To Do Biopsy On Dd
Fiddle-Faddle replied to LauraW's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Seems to me that the 2 things of utmost importance are: #1) that you and your daughter resolve your health problems as soon as possible and #2) That you get some ANSWERS so that you can achieve #1. Most likely, the quickest way to both #1 and #2 is for both of you to go off gluten. That WILL give you answers. A biopsy might--or might not. A biopsy... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to LauraW's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you stay on gluten while you are pregnant, you run the risk of doing harm both to yourself and to the baby. As far as the risks of the biopsy, I think the most serious risks are from the anesthesia. I have a friend who is an anesthesiologist, and she had an absolute fit when I was considering IV sedation to have my wisdom teeth out. She read me the... -

Wow, I guess I need a new endocrinologist, too. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's 17 years ago. I was complaining to my endocrinologist in February that I felt hyperthyroid, even though I was on the same dosage of Synthroid that had worked for several years, but when she tested my blood, it said that I was hypo, not hyper. And all this time, I thought... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to LauraW's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
With all due respect, TCA, it wasn't a big deal for you because it went smoothly for you. Had it not, you might not be recommending it. It's kind of like saying that ingesting gluten isn't a big deal to someone who can't handle it. The problem with the scope is, they don't know in advance who can't handle the anesthesia. I do agree that, if you are...
