  1. Well, THAT explains a lot of your health issues, doesn't it????!!! Can you rent a storage space and put the moldy bed there, so that you have it for proof, but it's not in your house making you sicker? I'm betting that their lawyer will get a lot of cases thrown out because people will have gotten rid of the beds--and the proof. Don't let them get...
  2. Raven, you are such a good writer, you might consider writing this as a first-person experience for your local newspaper. Take pictures of the classroom site, and take a rough measurement of how far away the bathrooms are (take more pictures), and time how long it takes to get from one to the other. Shame them into better planning! I know the local...
  3. I wish I had something helpful to add, but am sending {{{hugs}}}!
  4. You could up the amount of baking powder. If you are not yeast-sensitive, you could add a teaspoon of yeast; mix it with the rice milk (warm the rice milk slightly, so it's lukewarm, but NOT hot), let it sit for 5 minutes or so. If you have the baking powder, you don't need to let it sit to rise for 45 minutes--maybe 10, and it will rise more in the oven...
  5. gfp, you are absolutely right. My father has one doctor who breaks the mold--he did give my dad a choice, when, at 82, he was diagnosed as diabetic. My dad lost 25 pounds, exercised every day, and cut out all processed carbs except a slice of whole wheat bread every day. He eats a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as fish, chicken, and...
  6. How soon is the appointment with the doctor? If it's only a few days, I would be inclined to think that a few days won't make significant difference. But if it's several weeks away, then I would call the doctor's office, or even stop in early in the morning, and request to see his nurse. Explain that your daughter has been seriously ill for years, she is...
  7. I know nothing about the neem --I just wanted to suggest that you cut out all processed foods (this would include things like cocoa powder, energy drinks, yogurts, and supplements except possibly the neem, which I really don't know about). I would also cut out all gluten-free substitutes, like buckwheat flakes, and all dairy substitutes (like soy milk...
  8. I'm reading this thread because I have a friend whose 4-year-old daughter has recurrent UTI's. She doesn't feed her daughter a lot of sugary juice, has her drink lots of water, keeps her daughter very clean, wipes front-to-back, no bubble baths, etc, but still has recurring infections. I tend to want to blame everything on gluten, but wonder what studies...
  9. IBS is a SYNDROME. A syndrome is not a disease, it's a collection of symptoms "of unknown cause." Compare the lists of symptoms for IBS and celiac. They are identical. Most patients with IBS were never screened for celiac. I believe the term IBS was coined not by doctors, but by the pharmaceutical industry so that they could sell expensive prescription...
  10. Ask the doctor to write a letter to your MIL about your dd's situation. You can also try writing out a letter yourself on your home computer, printing it out, and ask your doctor to sign it. Address it to: "relatives and caregivers of ____________ (your daughter's name) List, as simply as possible: the direct cause: (gluten: ANYTHING made from wheat...
  11. I can't help wondering if dyshidrotic eczema is really dermatitis herpetiformis that hasn't been correctly diagnosed... I have the same nickel allergy problem--but after 2 years gluten-free, I can wear metal earrings for several hours. (I used to last about 10 minutes.)
  12. Nah, I should have been clearer. I hope things work out well--please keep us posted!
  13. I realize that this must be a very stressful time for you. I was not criticizing YOU, but the vast majority of doctors (yes, even pediatricians) who push for unnecessary surgical procedures. When I was a baby, the leading pediatric orthopedist in NYC told my mother that I had a degenerative bone disease, that I would need to be institutionalized...
  14. Grilled chicken is unfortunately NOT usually safe, as it is frequently pre-marinated in a soy-sauce-containing marinade. It's really shocking, isn't it, how many items that we think of as "plain" have all kinds of ingredients that we wouldn't expect. The one that gets me is tuna salad--who would think that there would be bread crumbs in tuna salad...
  15. Great advice from everyone. It could be celiac. Trying the diet might give you a VERY clear answer. You also might want to research vaccines (nvic.org is a good place to start)--there is DEFINITELY a link, I don't care what the doctors and studies say. The studies are all funded by the pharmaceutical industry anyway, so you're not going to find any...
  16. I don't know of any test on a 13 month old that is extremely accurate--except for dietary response. I have a friend whose 5-year-old's tests show no signs whatsoever of gluten intolerance, but his reactions are VERY strong. The answer: a gluten-free diet. You don't need a doctor's permission to go on it, and if all symptoms go away, you have your answer...
  17. Oh, I'm so sorry you are feeling so lousy! Hope you feel better soon. Even if your colleague knows you have food issues, it's really not up to them to know how to read the fine print on all the labels to figure out if everything is gluten-free. If they haven't lived it, it's just not fair to them to ask them to take on the responsibility of knowing...
  18. Can you use smoked turkey breast (sliced from the deli counter) instead of ham? If you ask them to slice it very thick, you can brown each slice on both sides, and glaze it with peach preserves or crushed pineapple, a smidge of dijon mustard, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, etc. COurse, that's kinda flip-flopping main dish and side dish, isn't it???
  19. Sam's Club's rotisserie chicken used to be gluten-free--they changed suppliers (at least, they did here in PA) to one who uses soy sauce in the marinade. So you weren't imagining things! Last time I checked, Costco's rotisserie chicken was gluten-free, and they had LOTS of other great gluten-free items, including Trident brand salmon burgers that ARE...
  20. It's a total myth that you have to be underweight to have celiac. Many of us here were overweight until we went off gluten. If being gluten-free fixes all your health woes, then yes indeedy, you have found your answer and don't need another test! Besides, I'm not the only one here who believes that for at least some of us, gluten intolerance is just...
  21. The consensus on this board since I joined 2 1/2 years ago has always been that one has to be ingesting the equivalent of 4 slices of bread per day for 3-4 months. Any less, and it's likely that not enough antibodies are produced for a positive test result. It does seem that many of us with adult-onset celiac had our celiac triggered in part by such large...
  22. I totally understand why you did it. And my reactions (or lack thereof) are about on par with yours. Just do the best you can. I don't eat out much, not because of cc, but because I get so frustrated trying to explain to Idiots that white bread is really made from wheat.
  23. I don't have obvious reactions to one-time glutenings, but the list of my symptoms that either drastically improved or went away off gluten are: the rash from hell (DH) reflux joint pain lack of energy thyroid problems (I was able to reduce meds by 50%!) hair falling out bloating alternating mild diarrhea and constipation (if you had asked me Before...
  24. When I went gluten-free, I told me 3 children that they could use whatever bread they wanted for sandwiches at lunch, but that breakfast and lunch were going to be gluten-free--I just didn't have TIME to make 2 sets of meals! That said, I promised them that I would make all their favorites for dinner, but that I would have to make them gluten-free. So...
  25. I tried doing just that, about 6 months into the gluten-free diet. I ate a homemade Chinese dumpling that a Chinese friend made. I had no reaction whatsoever. Which means I have no idea when I've been cc'ed or even majorly glutened. Which means I have to be even more careful.
