  1. Are you allowed to post the name of the restaurant here? All the Chicago residents can start phoning the restaurant and asking for gluten-free...
  2. If it were only a matter of short-term discomfort, I would agree with you, but knocking a child out IS risky, and the procedure IS invasive (though not to the extent of, say, open-heart surgery), which carries other risks. And the chance of false positive is ridiculously high. If they don't pick an affected error, then what? Is it not really celiac?...
  3. Here in Pittsburgh, someone is opening a gluten-free bakery! They haven't even opened yet, and, according to the newspaper, their phone is already ringing off the hook with people who want their gluten-free yummies! Maybe you could open one in the Chicago area? I bet people would be lining up around the block!
  4. You might pm Ursa Major, who I think was diagnosed with both, and to my memory, both disappeared when she stopped eating all the foods that triggered it (in her case, gluten was the biggie, but there were many others, including peppers, tomatoes, etc.) You also might want to check out the OMG thread and the Lyme disease thread. There seems to be a surprisingly...
  5. It really does get better, much better! And the info and support you'll find here is amazing. I ate extremely healthy meals for the first two gluten-free weeks--eggs for breakfast, salads for lunch, and stir-fries (with LaChoy soy sauce or San-J tamari, doctored up with rice wine, ginger, garlic, lime juice, and lots of cilantro) for dinner. My snacks...
  6. Mia, I forget what foods you can eat. If you wouldn't mind posting those again, maybe we could come up with creative ideas for packing/cooking/meal prep, etc. It might be worth investing in a tiny portable microwave that you can keep in the hotel room. I usually bring lots of zipper bags and fill them with ice cubes and keep them in one of those cheapie...
  7. Forget the mixes, they charge about 10X what it costs to mix up the ingredients yourself! There are several wonderful recipes (including chocolate chip cookies that rival gluteny Tollhouse--YES, THEY ARE GOOEY) on Annaliese Roberts' website, www.foodphilosopher.com. These recipes taste as good or better than any mix. Basically, you make your own flour...
  8. I read that they use New York City tap water (which is actually from a source in the Catskills), so that should be, "The Noive!" (Think of the Cowardly Lion here...)
  9. I think it's at the Galleria mall, right? I've never been to the Bravo's there, but I've been to the Galleria. Take 279 S to the Ft. Pitt tunnel, go through the tunnel, and exit at Banksville road. Stay on Banksville until you hit Cochran Road (a T-intersection). Turn Left on Cochran Keep going straight on Cochran; at some point, it will...
  10. I have had 2 done without sedation. They sprayed my throat twice as much, which helped a lot. I knew in advance that I would be gagging a lot, so I was very conscious of trying to relax my stomach muscles and breathing. I had a lot of saliva, much more than I'd expected, and I was able to communicate that to the nurse so that she could suction it out...
  11. Ursa, that's wonderful! I'm so happy to hear that you are feeling better and have found some answers! Does this doctor know any doctors within an hour or two of where you live in Canada who might be more reasonable than your old one?
  12. Don't know if this will help at all, but to my knowledge, the only things I seem to have major problems with are gluten and--coffee. My brother has no food problems, but I remember seeing him try his first cigarette--and he vomited (which is one of the reasons I have never ever ever been remotely tempted to try it). apparently, it happened every time...
  13. Depends on where you go. Some restaurants use pre-marinated chicken.
  14. You do not need a doctor's permission to try the gluten-free diet, and you do not need to let a doctor bully you into an invasive, risky procedure that is nothing more than a fishing expedition. You already know that gluten is the problem. The biopsy only lets the doctor confirm the amount of damage to the villi--IF he happens to biopsy a damaged area...
  15. No such thing as a retarded question here, we're all learning! Eggplant: Open Original Shared Link A common Italian-American dish is eggplant parmesan, which is sliced eggplant that has been breaded and fried, then layered with tomato sauce and mozzarella and parmesan cheeses and baked like a lasagna. So I would think most Italian restaurants...
  16. I know each box is cheaper than the can, but the box only has a couple of spoonfuls of the powder and only makes one batch. I was assuming that the can could make several batches--but I don't know how much to use and if it's exactly the same as the powder from the box.
  17. Boy, your story sounds way too familiar. I was on TPN with my second pregnancy, and had hyperemesis with all three. Of course, I kept trying to follow doctor's orders, didn't know I had a problem with gluten yet, so I tried eating crackers all the time (gee, wonder why I couldn't keep them down... ). My first was born very small (induced 3 weeks early...
  18. I finally found the blue can of Kraft cheese powder--at Wal-Mart, of all places!!! Yay, Wal-Mart. I remember seeing here that it's gluten-free, and that people use it to make mac'n'cheese with gluten-free pasta, but how much of the cheese powder do you use? And how much milk and butter? I'd much rather make "real," from scratch cheese sauce, but...
  19. First of all--HOORAY that you have made such an effort to breastfeed, as that is nearly always the very best for baby. Do you mind if I ask you for more information? I apologize if it seems like I am interrogating you! I have some suspicions as to what might be wrong, but I don't know enough of your situation yet. How long have you had symptoms of...
  20. Ditto on the thyroid. Also, do your research on Graves' BEFORE talking to the doctor. Know what is considered normal range bloodwork-wise today, as the parameters have changed in the last couple of years. According to my endocrinologist, most endocrinologists are aware of the new guidelines, but most other docs are not. Gluten-free snacks will NOT give...
  21. Best of luck, whatever you decide. Please keep us posted!
  22. I didn't bother seeing an allergist, because celiac disease and/or gluten intolerance are not allergies. They are autoimmune disorders. Many (but not all) people believe that celiac disease is simply what is likely to happen if you are gluten intolerant and continue to eat gluten. Of course, if you have any reason to suspect that you might be allergic...
  23. Oh, I'm so sorry. {{{{{}{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}}
  24. Patti, I'm sure that there are many possible causes of stinging sweat. In my own experience, my sweat gets like that when I am dehydrated. I always assumed it was because of a higher concentration of salt? So my questions would be, are you drinking enough, and have you increased salt consumption (which wouldn't necessarily mean salty food)?
  25. Is there any chance vaccines are a factor here? From what you say, her problems began at around two months--which is the age that many pediatricians begin vaccinations. You've probably already wracked your brains, trying to figure just what might have changed around then. I'm not saying never to get any vaccines. But at this point, with her health...
