  1. I am crying my eyes out reading this thread. I have been sick my entire life. As a baby, I projectile vomitted breast milk and formula. As a toddler and child I was in and out of doctor's offices with "tummy pain." My parents were told I was a "sensitive" child and there was nothing wrong. I learned to hide my pain but when I passed out as a teen and...
  2. The surgeon who operated on me (hysterectomy, bilateral oopherectomy) found endo on the bowel. I was a mess. He "excised" what he could (how he did this, heaven only knows) but I worry, on my bad days that it's still there. I don't know what to suggest as I'm more or less in the same boat.
  3. I recently read material on this site: Open Original Shared Link.

    ARCHIVED Las Vegas

I was there last year and had dinner at Gallagher's in New York, New York. I told them I was a Celiac and they managed a lovely meal for me.

    ARCHIVED New Job

I agree with Rusla. Telling them about a health-threatening situation isn't starting off on the wrong foot, it's prudent and a reputable employer will respect you for it. I've been amazed and gratified that telling everyone has resulted in scores of people saying, "My neighbour/aunt/cousin/friend has that!" and with my co-workers doing as much as possible...
  6. I am in this position a great deal (several times each week) - cake for birthdays, pizza lunches, meetings where sandwiches are brought in. I used to get very upset (not angry, but embarrassed because I didn't like telling the "I'm a Celiac" story each time). Over time I came to accept that people meant to be kind (often offering to get something special...
  7. Oh my goodness, how funny. My husband and I thought we invented Mexican lasagna! We were trying to use the corn tortillas, stuff and rolled, and make enchilads but that didn't work and turned into a lasagna-like casserole. Now we make them that way on purpose. We heat drained browned beef (with salsa and sour cream) in baking pan, layer tortillas, layer...
  8. Weight bearing exercise is what my doc prescribed. Yeah, right, with my health..

    ARCHIVED Stomach Flu

I got in Sunday night and was soooo sick. Fever, vomitting, diarrhea. Ugggg. It's all over the building where I work. 'Tis the season, I guess. Get well soon everyone.
  10. I tried this stuff for a few days and it made me so terribly ill I quit. Now I'm glad I did.
  11. Yes, just off Calgary Trail at 42nd. It was very nice.
  12. Well, my quest for a gluten-free life has moved forward. I've spent many (frustrating) hours on product websites and at the pharmacy reading labels. As a consequence, I've made a decision: I will not buy personal care products that do not list ingredients. I've thrown out a mountain of bottles and jars (it's scary how much "stuff" we put on our bodies) and...
  13. Last night I had another fabulous meal at Sorrentino's south side (Calgary Trail) Edmonton. The server and chef were well versed in gluten and I had a delicious dinner. Recently my boss was taking a group out to dinner and one of them is a Celiac. They called the restaurant, Characters, and were delighted with the intelligent and caring response and the...
  14. I was misdiagnosed with MS before being diagnosed with Celiac Disease. My symptoms were numbness, tingling, red hot swollen feet, exhaustion, brain fog. The neurologist changed his mind once I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. He decided then that it was likely Peripheral Neuropathy. I still get those symptoms occassionally but not nearly as often and not...

    ARCHIVED New York Fries

Thanks Sasha. It's really hard for me as I'm located right across from SUB and there is nothing there I can eat. I have a drawer full of gluten-free snacks and I bring my own lunch every day. I'm often in meetings over the lunch hour and, of course, they always bring in sandwiches. If I can't eat before or after the meeting due to my schedule, I'll often...
  16. I use OPI so I'm thrilled to know it's safe.
  17. Does anyone know if it's available in Canada? I've never heard of it and am in the process of dumping everything that touches my skin that I can't prove if gluten-free (rashes, bad rashes).

    ARCHIVED New York Fries

I am so sorry you got sick. I get so angry when it happens to me. Sasha, I work at the UofA and have never notice a NYF - where is it?
  19. This is a fascinating and timely thread for me. I am struggling with lack of appetite (maybe it is fear of food, I don't know) and horrible bloating. i have a question: Is Ensure gluten-free?
  20. You make me feel less alone. Thank you. Brain fog is the thing I fear most - in my hyper-paced world I can't afford it. The D is a nightmare. I'm scheduled in back-to-back meetings and this is a horrendous problem. Exhaustion. I want to cry just typing the word. I am so so so tired. The pain? I've been in pain my entire life so it barely...
  21. I live on their stuff. I'm in the same city as they are so I can get all of their products. The pizza crusts are a lifesaver and we have cobbled together many a meal basedon them. The oreos are so good, the first time I had one I cried, thinking I was doing something I oughtn't. I adore their donuts. This company had changed my life for the better. I applaud...
  22. I'm going to Calgary next week on business so this is wonderful to read. I have noticed, in the past several years, a general growing knowledge and seriousness about Celiac Disease. When I enter a restaurant (or book a table by phone) it's the first thing I say. I judge whether I'll eat there based on the response. I've walked away from countless establishments...
  23. I'm a professional communicator and I am absolutely outraged when I read that customer help folks are rude! I can't believe this. For us, our health is at stake if we use the wrong products. My biggest frustration is products with no ingredient labels, which send me to the website, only to find glossy fancy ads and no ingredients. Enough to drive...
  24. Karen, those are excellent articles and I appreciate you sharing them. I imagine (hope!) that the generation being born now will not be misdiagnosed and will not suffer the way so many of us have and that physicians will have a firm grasp on this entire puzzle. It would be wonderful to think of future generations being spared the misery we have endured...
  25. Thank you all so very much. I have been on a gluten free diet for nearly ten years but have had odd problems off and on. I am pretty well educated about foods and meds and we are very careful shoppers. However, I change personal care products from time to time so one of them in use now may be causing this rash. It wouldn't have occurred to me if I hadn...
