  1. If you buy any appellation controlled French wine or DOP Italian then the ingredients are strictly controlled. An exception is Bordeaux who are pretty lax over the appellations ... then you need to decide if you are buying a quality wine or a cheap one. Bourgoyne has probably the strictest appellations where several do not allow any yeast to be...

    ARCHIVED English Check?

Casey isn't celiac but she's on the very short list of people I trust to cook for me.... Well, I figure that a newspaper like 'The Observer' does care about spelling, however they don't seem to care enough to have answered....
  3. This is rather easily explained..... normal TP in Russia is used for official documents (I kid you not) .... Ive spent a long time reading older Russian papers and the best quality you usually get is best described as TP....
  4. AndreaB summed it up rather well so ... The only thing to add is that plain washing isn't enough. You can scrub stainless steel with scouring pads and you need to throw away the scouring pads after touching gluten ... wooden spoons only cost cents anyway but what needs to be said is sticking things with gluten in a dishwasher contaminates everything...
  5. Vikki I just want to point to the danger in this .... BostonCeliac, sorry your is just the last post.... nothing personal against you. Here is the real danger.... Irish/German/Swedish and on my Dad's side I'm Italian/Greek. Well most Irish people have Viking blood ... most "germans" are gothic races who again have Swedish blood. Italy...
  6. Pretty much... some brands are just better than others at listing contaminants inthe production process, others don't use any gluten ingredients in other products so no containation... experiences of others is very valuable... but because the reaction is delayed its easy to be confused. I know it sounds impossible but its not, you just need to follow...
  7. Its really a matter of the brand .... things to watch out for are for instances malted ones ... but usually they are gluten-free but some makes have cross contamination in the manufacturing environment. Try and stick with brands people here recommend, not much useme recommending since the brands and products are different here.
  8. Yep, I recently bought a computer peripheral and on my way home was struck down. The nearest loo was a disgusting portaloo..... but at this point I knew I had seconds, not minutes so I went ahead and .................... then I ripped open the shrink wrap packaging and started with the instructions in Russian, Arabic and Polish etc. working towards more...
  9. OMG ... we are not worthy (everyone repeat) I talked to a few gluten-free chefs in Italy recently and one of them told me the secret with the thin pizza bases was simply the shaer gluten-free flour, salt and water ONLY..... no yeast or anything else. Interestingly shaer is owned by Heinz.... as I discovered having a gluten-free beer with my gluten...
  10. You just described my mom ......perfectly.... that is until she starts screaming at the dog to shut up... which of course just excites and confuses the dog more. She is a pretty stupid dog to start off ... No harm in starting .... I mean the whole thing is a game you are both meant to enjoy. Start off just on the floor with a toy wrestling...
  11. Before or after walking through a bakery I think in general the CODEX is accepted as a standard, even when not legally defined but 20ppm is not the lowest limit possible to detect but the lowest limit possible to detect on very cheap tests....which basically are defined by the food industry. Much more accurate testing is possible but its a bit...
  12. Yes.... and right NOW..... ouch..... and I hdn't really thought but I think you are correct and this is due to my glutening.....
  13. All dogs can be taught to fetch but retreivers are obviously the easiest to train because its instinctive. It all depends on your relationship with your dog.... My moms dog won't fetch for her because my mom lets her boss her about..... but once the dog realises its place and the fact fetch makes you happy AND is fun then they will all do it.... ...
  14. i have to agree...... I just tell people its a house rule and when I break it I get sick. Do you drink? Why not suggest a bottle of wine or if not flowers ???
  15. LOL I misread highway robbery for highly rubbery for a second!
  16. ack.. just reminded me I need to call my uncle!

    ARCHIVED What To Say?

I just say it''s not fitting conversation for a dinner table! If they press I just say my body tries to get rid of it any and which way it can.... now can we move on!
  18. I start off with oven cleaner ... its really bad stuff to breath in so open windows before you start aand close the kitchen door. Give it a really good spray and stick it in the oven when its already hot.... Leave it 15-20 mins and grad it with a oven mitt into boiling water (already in sink) and then using a waterproof volcanised rubber glove scrub...
  19. luckily my girlfriend has tissues in her handbag.... but I still had to call through a bar to get someone to tell her to pass me tissues.... HOW embarassing is that?
  20. uggghhhh ROTISERIE chicken.... uggghhh and and to that bar restrooms with no loo roll!
  21. Jules, I had very limited sucess with making pasta gluten-free.... its too sticky for the machine mostly or falls apart...
  22. My advice is start the gluten-free thing from DAY ONE..... Most people who meeet someone new with a dietry problem will just accept it.... (or not and you don't want to be dealing with the or nots anyway) but when people suddenly go gluten-free then people who previously knew you have a hard time accepting "but you used to....." etc. So my advice...
  23. Jerri .... the fact you realise that "I need to get a handle on my problem before it gets a hold on me." is really the key. Cooking is not difficult, leastwise no harder than riding a bike, it just takes practice. Perhaps people are born to be great chef's but EVERYONE can cook and cook well. I think you might be doing what happened to me...
  24. Vicky, However you meant the question it has taken on a life of its own and people are speculating as to where it "came from" thus adding another myth to celiac. When certain people, claiming to be MD's make statements about being 100% Croatian you can see this guy is either stirring up trouble or having a laugh with his medical buddies.... or perhaps...
  25. Sometimes those answers just come, just like the problems did to start off. The solutions can be so unexpected and from the last place you were expecting or things can turn out to be less serious than you worry. Cyberhugs to you both..... and hoping some of your problems find there own solutions and some of your problems turn out to be less serious...
