ARCHIVED Philly Cream Cheese
Franceen replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It is definitely gluten free. I eat it almost every day with gluten-free bread and smoked salmon - for breakfast (my version of "bagel, lox and cream cheese"!). Philadelphia is the only brand I use. -
Yes, DH leaves chicken pox-like scars. Red, turning to white circles, raised or depressed. I have them all over my body and many people ask if I had a bad case of chicken pox. The difference, however, is that DH usually does not apear on the face like chicken pox. I had the most dense DH's on my arms and legs (shins). But also many other places, but...

I can certainly sympathize with you. I gather your daughter is a teenager! They can certainly be rebellious. When I first needed to go gluten-free to determine if it was DH or not, I too, used this very same board to have a pity party! I remember saying in a post that I was still eating Rice Crispies which had "malt flavoring" and also eating some snack...

ARCHIVED Catwalk Curls Rock - Hair Products
Franceen replied to bfarnsworth0709's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am 100% gluten free in my diet, but don't watch shampoo or lotion or even lipstick (I wear lipstick about one a month at the most). I don't react for some reason. If I get the smallest amount of Glute via cross-contamination of food I do react very much! I just checked my body lotion and it doesn't appear to have anything gluteny. Same for my shampoo... -
I know how THAT goes! I was told LUPUS (an autoimmune thing), and many other autoimmune diseases - including Rheumatoid Arthritis and things that just didn't make any sense, except they were autoimmune. My doctors (plural) all thought the same thing. I think they drew about a gallon of blood over the 3 years hoping to find something OTHER than Celiac....

Maggi, Here are the things that Dermatologists and Allergists thought my rash was before the diagnosis (3 years of incorrect diagnoses): Atopic Dermatitis or Eczema Allergies (tested "borderline" for a couple of chemicals and chicken) Bugs (flea bites from my cats, gnats, bed bugs! dust mites!) Bugs - misplaced head lice, mites, etc Scabies ...

Maggi, Yes it does look a lot like DH. My DH was all over my body, except head/scalp/face/neck and bottom of feet. DH is know for being "bilateral" - it shows up in the same place on both sides of the body at the same time. It doesn't normally show up on the left forearm and not the right, etc. This was a dead giveaway for my Dr. in diagnosing. Also...

ARCHIVED Question About Gelatin
Franceen replied to Ridgewalker's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The only brand of unflavored Gelatin that I've ever had is "Knox Gelatin" and sometimes it's in the Health and Beauty Aids section because it's general use in the past was always for women to grow their nails long! It's not used for that so much anymore (but it does work). My husband picked some up a while back at the supermarket in the baking section.... -
ARCHIVED Buying A Mixer....
Franceen replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Speaking of mixers........... I've never been much of a cook (not at ALL!)....So I didn't even have a stand mixer and hadn't used my portable mixer in YEARS.... But my husband who USED to cook some has an old Oster stand mixer with two glass bowls, a dough hook, and regular beaters (like from the early 70s). Now I'm making gluten-free Breads. First I... -
I will chime in, in agreement with all the others. It definitely sounds like DH. DH is ALL I have - I have no other symptoms and I was directed to a gluten-free diet immediately. The ONLY OTC cure for DH is a gluten-free diet! It would be futile to try any creams, prescriptions, lotions, OTC pills - I did that for 3 years and got absolutely nowhere except...
-
YES! It absolutely does sound like DH. I had DH for 3 years and no Dr. dx it! I researched myself and went gluten-free and low and behold my rash disappeared and never came back (unless I get inadvertently Glutened!). The Prednisone (if by pill) will definitely slowly help but will mask whatever help the gluten-free diet is giving you. If after finishing...

ARCHIVED Is Nesquik Gluten-free?
Franceen replied to Luke987's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
According to the Clan Thompson Food Smartlist, Newquik Syrup (all flavors) and ready-to-drink milk (all flavors) ARE GLUTEN FREE. No mention of the powder. Clan Thompson generally is relevant to both Canada and US, but not UK necessarily. Here's the info from the Nestle/Nesquik homepage on the powder. It APPEARS to be gluten-free and this is their... -
ARCHIVED Cc In Microwave, Stove? Pitch Them?
Franceen replied to F.deSales's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The most important new appliance would be a toaster and/or toaster oven, since the regular bread and the gluten-free bread all touch the inside of the toaster and the racks/grill and you can't immerse either in water nor clean very effectively. I would not see a need for a new oven and microwave especially since you always have stuff in a separate dish... -
ARCHIVED Bread Rising Too Much
Franceen replied to Franceen's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
NOT a good day for Bette Hagman 4-flour bread mix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, my bread is so full of air holes that is is hard to hold together (now done). Read the previous post from ipellegr - and what she does. That's what I'm doing next time. Different yeast and maybe less of it and I'm letting it rise on the counter like she suggests and STOP and BAKE... -
ARCHIVED Bread Rising Too Much
Franceen replied to Franceen's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks all! I'm relieved I'm not the only one. I have the book (by Bette Hagman) and that's where i got the recipe from. What's interesting is that the when mixed, the dough would fill up the whole pan almost to the top BEFORE rising! Maybe I mixed it too much and it started rising while mixing (or I beat air bubbles into it) or the milk was too warm... -
HELP!! Twice now I've made Bette Hagman's 4-Flour Blend Bread. The recipe is for a 1.5 lb loaf which is stated to be a 4.5-5" x 9" loaf pan. It calls for 3.5 cups of her flour blend (which includes the 4 flours, gelatin and sugar), 1.5 cups liquid (I use milk), 2 egg whites and 1 whole egg, 2.25 tsp yeast (I used Fleishmans "Rapid Rise" for Breadmakers...

ARCHIVED Trix
Franceen replied to jmd3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Maltodextrin has nothing to do with Malt and is OK. Modified Food Starch can be from Wheat, barley, corn, tapioca or other stuff. Sometimes asking the company yields the "legal reply" with the stuff about suppliers and etc. But DO watch for "malt flavoring" in ALL cereals by ALL mfg's! Malt Flavoring is made from barley and NOT gluten-free. That's Kellog... -

ARCHIVED Rising Bread And Bread Products
Franceen replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You may need to add a bit (up to tsp depending on size of loaf and other ingredients) of sugar. That should help it rise. You could also purchase some "dough enhancer" (from one of the online gluten-free stores) or use about 1 tsp of vinegar. Sometimes I use both. Most recently I had a loaf rise WAY too much - it overflowed all over everything! And... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed Dh - Have A Couple Of Questions?
Franceen replied to Tephie's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Welcome to the board. I have DH and only DH (not intestinal symptoms and no damage to villi)....But I have wicked DH if I eat one small gram of gluten! I have never worried about personal care products and they've never bothered me (including lipstick - but I only wear that about once a month). I don't have the problem with my hair after it's dry.... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Food At Restaurants
Franceen replied to Franceen's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
THANK YOU! THANKS ALL FOR YOUR GREAT SUGGESTIONS. I am going to get some "Purefit" bars for my next trip which is to Phoenix and Reno (from DC) in 2 weeks. I am going to use all your suggestions, in fact. I'll let you know how it goes. Franceen -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Food At Restaurants
Franceen replied to Franceen's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Hey thanks a bunch. That will help a lot. Coincidentally, my husband came home from Shoppers Food Warehouse tonight with a Thai Kitchen noodle bowl! Nice and lightweight to carry in suitcase. I have taken the Bumble Bee tuna foil pouches in the past but never could figure out what to eat them with - I got sick of eating plain tuna with a fork - even... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Food At Restaurants
Franceen replied to Franceen's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I SHOULD do the same, but am limited by the government "allowances" - e.g. Residence Inn isn't always within the Per Diem, so I'm not allowed to stay there. And can only take the "contract carrier" airline - so end up going on same plane as others and then having to rent one car. But since I'm the boss and approve all their travel and my own, I have to... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Food At Restaurants
Franceen replied to Franceen's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Wow, thanks for all these suggestions. I'm going to try all of them! Makes for a heavy and checked suitcase, but seems WELL WORTH IT! I would love the brand of the cup-a-soups when you find them - they are light and easy to carry-on to a plane. (Get hot water from flight attendant). Again thanks. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Food At Restaurants
Franceen replied to Franceen's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Ah Yes, the packing of food! Just recently I've been trying to stay at suite hotels to get a microwave and fridge. Hence the Residence Inn. Then I go to a supermarket and buy food that I can eat. I don't HAVE to go with them, but I'm their boss and I have the car (we work for Gov). Sometimes there just isn't enough time to go to supermarket (arrive late...
