  1. Sure, it can come and go......

    I'm 13 and going into eighth grade...anyway, my symptoms have been strongly present since 1st grade, but 5th grade was a pretty bad year. Then, in 6th grade I was fine....only sick maybe once all year....it was amazing. It turns out that celiac disease symptoms often subside around the start of adolesence. People actually used to think that you grew out of it since symptoms would go often go away temporarily. Seventh grade was the worst time I ever had with symptoms.....and therefore, with the help of 2 doctors, I was finally diagnosed with celiac disease.

    Now, when I went to a nutritionist, Anne Lee (works with famous celiac doc., Dr. Greene), she said that often symptoms get worse before they get better. After about six months, I still get sick and lately my symptoms have been worse. Additionally, I might have some other issue. Before finding celiac disease, we ran allergy tests (none), I know my thyroid is fine, strongly doubt a lactose/dairy/casein intolerance, and my new doc. (really helpful) thinks that it might be that my system has a hard time digesting fats/starches........he didn't know this when he mentioned it, but it turns out that my diet is nearly ALL fats and starches......starchy breakfast, starchy lunch, and dinner consists of starches, meats, vegetables.....snacks are often starchy or fatty. I think he's going to give me some enzyme to help digest them and he might have to tweak my diet to limit starches and instead have meats or veggies. Sorry to get too deep into my personal problems, but this is just an example of a hidden problem.

    Before going gluten-free, symptoms could come and go depending on gluten intake. It used to be that whenever I'd go out for pizza, I'd get sick that night...now I understand why (pizza is MAJOR gluten). Straying from evidence and theories, I just wanted to let you know that this happened to me....sometimes I'd have great weeks, sometimes weeks where I was constantly sick.......whatever the reason, I had the same experience.

  2. Well, I know that the gluten would not be absorbed through the scalp. Gluten molecules are too large to be absorbed through the skin. Obviously, a shampoo should be gluten-free.....after all, it could get in your mouth, eyes, etc. I had actually been thinking about that lately, cause I thought I had read to be careful about it, but didn't remember why. Hmm.....could it be something about if your hair gets in your mouth? I don't really know, but I had been thinking about that the past few days.

  3. Every crumb, every little bit matters! It isn't that difficult to keep things separate; it just requires thinking and being conscious. I have my own PB jar, own cooking things (pot, frying pan, spatula, spoon, whisk, toaster oven). The toaster oven is really no big deal; it's a matter of investing a few dollars towards your health in the future. My toaster oven has a black exterior, the gluten one is white; it's really easy. Label your gluten-free jars with a sticker or use a permanant marker to write gluten-free on the cap......not too difficult, either. Regardless of how you feel, every crumb you ingest is hurting you.

  4. my 11 year old is very obsessive about being careful. He Washes his hands constantly and doesnt like gluten foods near him......

    Sounds like me.... :D .....it drives my parents and my brother CRAZY.....I constantly wash my hands, as well, and I often try to stay away from someone eating gluten, stay away from any crumbs, I'm kinda a nut, but my mom is really accepting of it; after all, she says: "You're the one dealing with the symptoms and the pain, not me." Anyway, just wanted to say that that sounded exactly like me :lol:

  5. My dietician said that it's safest to chew Wrigley's...and it seems like others, jaimek, had the same experience. I have chewed it, but I don't know if it gave me trouble because my symptoms haven't gone away....I haven't chewed it recently...anyway, I didn't notice any correlation between chewing the gum and getting sick.

    Rian, are you asking how to make a quote with your message? If so, you can quote a person's message by hitting the quote button or when you hit "add reply", there's a button at the top that says quote. Click that button to sort of "open the quote" and then paste or type in the information you want to quote. Then you click the button again to close the tag (or the quote). I'm not sure if that is what you were asking.....or are you referring to copying and pasting? (taking a group of words, copying them, and putting them somewhere else)......?

    As for Doritos......Jessica recently typed up a list of their updated list....it's on the board....on the FritoLays site, they have a gluten-free list, too:Open Original Shared Link......updated as of Aug. '03......so you might want to look for the list that Jessica (angel_jd1) typed up. Never eat anything that you're unsure of....

  7. Eating less more frequently is a good idea in theory, but would be difficult for me to do. When you go to school from 8:00-4:30, and there's one lunch period, it's kinda hard--let me rephrase that--impossible to squeeze in five or six little meals.

    How about Ensure? All flavors are gluten-free.......has a lot of nutrients, but I don't know if it'd have a great effect on any of you if nothing else has worked.

  8. Rian (rattaway) had trouble trying to start a new thread (error messages), so I'm starting this topic.....and Rian can fill in any details that I didn't mention in a reply.....etc. Anyway:

    Do other celiacs have problems with gum?  Brands like Dentyne, Big Red, Juicy Fruit, ect. all have that powdery coating on them and they give my husband and mother in law headaches(they are both celiacs too).  They think the powder stuff on gum is a mix of sugar and wheat.  I haven't had that kind of gum in yrs. and so I can't tell you if it gave me headaches or not since I was also eating gluten back then.  Please ask for me since I can't figure out this website.

  10. I love your slideshow avatar! Cute pics....I've seen this kind of thing using some program, but can you do that with standard programs on a comp.? :D

    I don't think you have to be on gluten for enterolab tests.....as long as it hasn't been years w/o gluten...so it might make sense to have your pizza before the test, but you don't need a full-out gluten rampage....and Molly is right, this is already a good test. I think it is a sign.....you've been off gluten for a little while now, so your intestines are healing and your intestines are getting more sensitive to gluten.

    Well, physically I'm thirteen (and a half :lol: ), but I've never really spoken or acted like a thirteen year-old.....thank you for the compliment :D.

  12. The blueberry muffins weren't quite as "realistic" as the corn.

    Also, if you didn't toast the english muffin, that's why--no eng. muffin is good before toasting :D ......it's definitely thicker than most eng. muffins, but once toasted, it tastes the same to me and it's actually nicer to have a thick eng. muffin cause it doesn't get burnt as easily. My brother actually prefers mine to his and often asks for a piece :)

  14. For anyone who hasn't already heard me go crazy over Foods By George.....they're the best! :D

    The brownies taste better than the "real" thing. The blueberry and corn muffins taste just as good as or better than the "real" thing. But I just found out that they are not famous for either the brownies or muffins -- but rather for their english muffins! The eng. muffins are soooooooo good....100 times better than the old kind. This company has such a high standard for food and I just wanted to praise them for that--I heard that they had a gluten-free ravioli that was so popular that they couldn't keep up with the demand--they would've had to get a bigger factory--so unfortunately they stopped making it......kinda stupid in my opinion, but whatever.

    I just wanted to HIGHLY recommend that brand to anyone who sees it somewhere....they have such high-quality products. Oh, I forgot to mention: the corn/blueberry muffins are gluten-free, but the brownies are gluten-free, soy free, dairy free, lactose free, casein free. Finally, the english muffins are gluten-free, dairy free, lactose free, casein free, and corn free.....they're so "free" that they're fine for just about anyone to eat :D . I just wanted to make this post in hopes that someone will try their products and realize that this is such a great brand. Their products are expensive, but well-worth it.

  15. No, it's fine to vent. I guess, too, this serves as a good example to all of us of how fortunate we are with our situations......having celiac disease. It's easy to feel sorry for ourselves and at times we deserve to feel sorry for ourselves; we have it harder than a lot of people in this country do---but I think I tend to lose sight of the fact that there are also a lot of people who have it harder than we do.

    Obviously I'm sorry to hear that....my mom had breast cancer about five years ago; she survived. If you or your mom want to talk to her about it, I know she'd be more than willing to provide support. She was really grateful when others who survived it supported her when she got it....I'll PM you w/ her e-mail if you want to talk to her or give it to your mom. Good luck.
