  1. Wow, good point! I wouldn't have thought of that, but I will next time I'm handed someone's baby to play with. Thanks for saving me from getting glutened!
  2. My NSO thought I was nuts until we went to Red Robin. I asked about gluten free and they brought out a printed sheet of what was available. Somehow seeing that enough other people have this issue that RR has a special info sheet made it real for him.
  3. I'm sorry, it wasn't you. And the person didn't say bad things, just an argument against eating meat and being able to get all your nutrition from other sources.
  4. Maybe not the best semantics. Removing gluten causes no harm. Removing the foods that contain gluten might limit certain nutrients unless you get them from a different source. I know your post goes on to say basically that, but you (I think it was you(?)) used the opposite argument in a different post about removing meat. The loss of any one food...
  5. Wow!! Yay for your Dad!!
  6. Since nobody really knows, my guess would be that you did absolutely the right thing. You have given her time to become healthy and strong and nobody "needs" gluten. If I had a child I would never feed her brussel sprouts because I think they're yucky. Not for a second would I worry about her missing out on some vital brussel sprout-induced experience...
  7. Someone asked about this a while back and I just saw this article so I thought I'd post it. Results Fifty-one children developed CDA. Findings adjusted for HLA-DR3 status indicated that children exposed to foods containing wheat, barley, or rye (gluten-containing foods) in the first 3 months of life (3 [6%] CDA positive vs 40 [3%] CDA negative) had a...
  8. What if some of these things that have been labled diseases, like fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis are not, in fact, diseases, but symptoms? What if, you cure/prevent the disease, you never experience these symptoms? Just speculation...
  9. Ummmm, what's a knish?
  10. I'm not fond of the idea of these drugs either, but from a totally different perspective. This comes from way back when I used to to animal work. It seems to me that a dissasociative drug which allows you to not remember what happened still means that you experience the pain or discomfort at the moment it's happening. I would only use these types of...
  11. I started eating meat again just because it required too much planning not to. I still have a hard time thininking of it as "food" (4 months as an omnivore). I actually invited a friend over for a barbecue and later realized I had forgotten to get meat! Oh well. Grilled vegetables are pretty good by themselves.
  12. Salmon (smoked is good), sauted mushrooms, goat cheese
  13. gfp, You do such a nice job of slapping around those smart-mouthed little kids
  14. Open Original Shared Link This is about an experiment where a russian scientist selectively bred the least aggressive foxes. It's a great read. "Their bodies changed in size and proportions, leading to the appearance of dwarf and giant breeds. The normal pattern of coat color that had evolved as camouflage in the wild altered as well. Many domesticated...
  15. My mom makes fudge with coconut milk, I think it's a straight substitution. The kind of fudge made with marshmallow cream
  16. I love reading your posts. On a different aspect of genetics, I recently watched a program on PBS that investigated the domestication of dogs and linked the development of coat colors and floppy ears to aggresion. I'll try to remember which program it was and see if there is a link on the web somewhere.
  17. Yes, but my point is, when looked at in combinations, there are very clear haplotype trails. Here is link to an interesting article regarding human diversity. Open Original Shared Link
  18. gfp, I'm a little curious about where you get your genetic information from. We study the effect of SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) on gene responses. There are huge differences in the SNP profiles of the different races, and people are beginning to investigate the profiles of same race populations from different locations. If I look at one...
  19. I had all kinds of annoying joint pain that went away after about three months gluten-free. I've recently starting taking one advil every night before I go to bed and I am no longer even stiff in the mornings when I wake up. I figure since the new recommendation is two baby aspirin once a day for overall health, I'll eventually switch to that, once I feel...
  20. Ultimately you are NOT responsible for how someone feels. And while a letter is not a cop-out, it is easier for her to mis-read it if she chooses. You might want to avoid the details for that reason....
  21. I actually wondered about this a while ago and tried to find info on prevalence of reactive infants at birth from undiagnosed celiac moms. Also info on passing gluten to newborns through breast milk. There's not a lot of info out there on these specific questions, but I can probably find studies on other proteins and antibody reactions. I do my pubmed...
  22. Right before I went gluten-free my stomach was hugely bloated and I had a hard time sitting, bending over and breathing. All better now!
  23. From labtest online: Open Original Shared Link Eosinophil White blood cell readily stained with eosin. Eosinophils, normally about 1-3% of the total white blood cell count, are believed to function in allergic responses and in resisting some infections. You have antibodies to gliadin, so it's getting into your bloodstream (probably...
  24. I frequently go to the noon conferences for the residents, interns and med students. The format is usually Present case, Ask what the possible diagnoses could be, Discuss real cause. Many of the cases presented fit nicely with Celiac, but it's never once been mentioned, until yesterday!! The case was a women who presented with iron-poor anemia her 5...
  25. If you've only been gluten-free for two months its unlikely you've undergone a lot of healing. If you've been gluten-free for a year, the Abs might take longer. Since a lot of the joint inflammation and neural stuff is probably caused by Abs, we can just ask people: If you have neuro or joint symptoms to gluten and have been gluten-free for at least...
