Needing Some Encouragement...anxiety Kicking In

Hi...I read posts on here regularly, but I haven't been writing on here in a while because I have been doing really great after such a long struggle.  I was diagnosed Celiac by biopsy in Fall of 2011...really sick.  Well, I have been spending the past almost 2 years healing...ups & downs...but so thankful to be heading up more than down.

 

I finally felt well enough to start looking for part time work(my hubby works & we have 4 school age kiddos).  Our medical bills are so crazy from the period of time I was so sick, & I want/need to help out financially. 

 

I took a wonderful job a couple weeks ago that I begin tomorrow & my symptoms have absolutely returned.  I am so frustrated.  In my head, I'm sure this is completely anxiety kicking in...something I havent dealt much with but seems to be magnified in this new Celiac body of mine.  I've lost 7lbs in the past week, I get sick every time I eat, mornings are now my worst time, & I think I am panicking because I don't want to end up in the hospital again.  

 

I just need some encouragement & advice from some of you that have lived with Celiac Disease longer than me.  Is there anything you take to calm down your insides?  Is anxiety another angle of Celiac Disease that I have to get a grip on...if so, how do you deal? 

 

Sometimes I feel like I have conquered living with Celiac Disease...other times I feel like the disease is kicking my butt!

If its anxiety about the job and your new schedule....it will work itself out in a few days, right? You might try some relaxation techniques or yoga or a brisk walk.

Pregnant?

Try to sneak a little food in. Maybe broth or Popsicles. 2 bites of chicken and then go do something else. Then a couple of bites of rice. walk away. Sometimes being hungry can make the sick feeling in your stomach worse.

I tend to get "symptoms" when I am stressed too. I start to feel fluish, fatigued, crave carbs, get back pain and migraine, and C stops me up.  Exercise (walking) tend to help relax me, and so does a short meditation... it sounds a bit flaky, but if I sit for 5 minutes, close my eyes, breath evenly and deeply, and then I concentrate on relaxing my body from the top down... it works for me.  Extra sleep helps too.

 

I hope things settle down for you and you get into the work routine soon.

i thank God every day i am in a position that i don't have to work.  i am still not up to my goal weight and the first thing that takes a backseat, when i am working, is eating.  and i am a freight broker, so it's mega-stressful and super busy.   :(  but, our kids are grown and our bills are not as steep as they used to be raising 4 kids, so, it's manageable.  i am paying it forward, too, as i babysit (no charge) my grandson, my niece & nephew, the kid next door, etc - and i hope it helps everybody get ahead.  praying for strength and peace for you (and maybe a little xanax lolz)  ;)

Stress definitely does not help my symptoms. As mentioned walks seems to help. I try to leave myself some down time each day if possible, but if your a mom that may be more difficult. Try to let everyone know what you need from them and that if you are having a rough day that they will need to step up their game and be on their best behavior for the day and that you will have a little less to offer. When my kids get that dad is not doing so well they tend to behave better, but if not they know dad has a little shorter fuse when he is not feeling well. I totally get what you mean about thinking you have Celiac under control and then realizing it is in control at the moment. Anything I can do to take my mind off the symptoms or focus on the soul is helpful to me. Best wishes to you!

Congrats on the new job.

Celiac can give some folks anxiety but if you haven't had other issues with it since diagnosis or before then your anxiety is most likely due to the big changes that come with going back to work.

With a family that includes 4 school age kids going back to work is going to be stressful at first. Hopefully the whole house pitches in to help with household chores and daily preperation.

You have gotten some good suggestions from the other folks. Something that helps me a lot is I get up very early so I know if I should be having a bad morning I have plenty of time to ease into the day. I use that time when the world is quiet to do 'me' stuff like get on the computer, watch a show that I recorded because I went to bed too early to watch it, walk the dog etc.

I hope your first day of work goes smoothly and as stress free as possible.

      For my Vit D3 deficiency it was recommended to take with Vit K2 (MK7) with the Vit D. The Vit K2 helps absorption of Vit D3. Fat also helps with absorption. I take Micro Ingredients Vit D3 5000 IU with Vit K2 100 micrograms (as menaquinone:MK-7). Comes in soft gels with coconut oil.  Gluten free but not certified gluten free. Soy free, GMO free.

      @Known1, I submitted the following comment along with my contact information: "I have noticed that many food companies voluntarily include information in their ingredient/allergen label section when the product is made in an environment where cross contamination with any of the nine major allergens recognized by the FDA may also be likely. Even though celiac disease and gluten sensitivity are, technically speaking, not allergic responses, it would seem, nonetheless, appropriate to include "gluten" in that list for the present purpose. That would insure that food companies would be consistent with including this information in labeling. Best estimates are that 1% of the general population, many undiagnosed of course, have celiac disease and more than that are gluten sensitive."

      Celiac Disease causes more vitamin D deficiency than the general population because of limited UV sunlight in the winter and the little available from food is not absorbed well in the damaged small intestine.  Taking 10,000 IU a day (250 mcg) a day broke my depression. Taking it for eleven years.  Doctor recently said to not stop.  My 25(OH)D is around 200 nmol/L (80 ng/ml) but it took about six years to get there.  Increasing vitamin D also increases absorption of Calcium. A good start is 100-gram (3.5-ounce) serving of salmon,  vitamin D from 7.5 to 25 mcg (300 to 1,000 IU) but it is going to take additional vitamin D supplement to be effective.  More importantly salmon has an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio 1:10 anti-inflammatory compared to the 15:1 infammatory ratio of the typical Western diet.       Thank you for sharing your thoughts.  I respectfully disagree.  You cherry picked a small section from the page.  I will do the same below: The agency is seeking information on adverse reactions due to “ingredients of interest” (i.e., non-wheat gluten containing grains (GCGs) which are rye and barley, and oats due to cross-contact with GCGs) and on labeling issues or concerns with identifying these “ingredients of interest” on packaged food products in the U.S. “People with celiac disease or gluten sensitives have had to tiptoe around food, and are often forced to guess about their food options,” said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H. “We encourage all stakeholders to share their experiences and data to help us develop policies that will better protect Americans and support healthy food choices.” --- end quote Anyone with celiac disease is clearly a stakeholder.  The FDA is encouraging us to share our experiences along with any data to help develop future "policies that will better protect Americans and support healthy food choices".  I see this as our chance to speak up or forever hold our peace.  Like those that do not participate in elections, they are not allowed to complain.  The way I see it, if we do not participate in this request for public comment/feedback, then we should also not complain when we get ill from something labeled gluten-free.
