My name is Crystal and I am 34 yrs old I Just got my diagnosis on Tuesday what a kick in the gut. Celiacs. I have been having symptoms for 7 yrs, serious for bout 18 mths heard everything from gallbladder to pancreas. My joints and muscles have been affected. Not to mention every digestive issue my dr thought up. I am at a lost as to even where to begin. I have done Internet searches of course but I still don't feel prepared to deal with all these changes I mean this is forever. What is one piece of advise you have found invaluable?

I'm sorry to hear you've been feeling so poorly but I'm glad you have a diagnosis and can move forwards towards healing.

Acceptance is the key to happiness... That was the best fortune cookie I ever got - or ever will get since I've never seen a gluten-free fortune cookie. LOL  I just found I had to accept it and move on. Really, we have no other choice. Fighting this diagnosis will get us no where, all we can do is embrace it and do the best we can with it.

It helped me to look on the bright side too. Celiac disease is the only autoimmune disease out there that the patient has full control over her or his own treatment. We don't have to rely on doctors to medicate us properly to just treat the symptoms. Over time, we can pretty much stop the autoimmune attack and actually heal. that doesn't happen in RA, Lupus, Diabetes (type 1) or even hashimotos. I consider it to be the best of a lot of other bad options.

Yes, it sucks that I can't eat any baked goods that I want, or that I have to read any processed food label, but in the long run it is probably better for my health anyways.

Best wishes to you. Give yourself time - possibly months to years - and you'll feel better.

And welcome to the board.  :)

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
