Undiagnosed. Wondering If This Could Be Celiac Or Ibs?

Hello. I'm wondering if what I'm experiencing could be Celiac's or just severe IBS. I gave birth to twins in May of 2012, and starting about 6 weeks postpartum, I started experiencing bouts of diarrhea IMMEDIATELY after eating anything. Following the diarrhea, I started having quite severe gallbladder attacks about 3 nights per week. On 7/24, I had my gallbladder removed.Following my gallbladder surgery, on 7/29, I lost one of my children to SIDS. After this, the symptoms I had prior to the surgery started to come back. Now, I've included all of this, because I've read that Celiac's can be trigged after a life-changing event, and all three of those happened in the course of three months. Since then, I've had two weird rashes that I cannot explain, like poison ivy, weeping, and pretty itchy. The first appeared on my bum, and was there FOR weeks. A few weeks after that one went away, another one started around my eye on my face, and was the same way. It only lasted about a week or so. I'm certain neither of these were poison ivy, as I had spent those months confined to my house following the death of my daughter.

My diarrhea is the worst. It starts about 15 minutes after eating anything with severe abdominal pain. it comes in spurts you could say. It'll bother me for a few weeks, then be gone for a few weeks, etc. This spurt has lasted well over a month. My primary care doctor suggested IBS, but I told her that spicy and greasy food doesn't bother me the same way that a subway sandwich or a hot dog does. I've got a referral to see a G.I. on Monday (6/24). I'm curious if I'm  heading in the right direction for this? Or if I should have just accepted the IBS diagnoses from my primary care doctor and taken the meds? Does this sound like Celiac?

OH! I'm so sorry about your baby! That has to be one of the hardest things to get past!

Yes. I would say you are on the right track with Celiac. Let me look up a couple of things you can print and take with you to the GI. You can keep them in your purse and have them in case he blows you off or doesn't know much about Celiac. Be right back....

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I agree with Karen, you should get tested. This report has lots of info and lists the most common tests. Open Original Shared Link

Best wishes.

Thank you for these sites! I will try to remember to get them printed and take them with me. When my primary care doctor made the appointment for me, I mentioned to her that I have a feeling it may be Celiac's or a gluten sensitivity. So, hopefully my doctor mentioned that when making the appointment with the GI, so they know this ahead of time. :)

I've also suffered from migraines for the last 9 years. I also have a left temporal fossa arachnoid cyst, and was going to be tested for peripheral neuropathy before becoming pregnant with my first child. I put the test on hold due to the pregnancy and no medical insurance, and never followed through with it. I'm reading that this too can be related?

Migraines are a symptom. Not sure about the cyst. I know I have not had more than 4 migraines in the 3 1/2 years I have been gluten-free. Those 4 were not very bad and went away with Excederin

Oh I know the cyst isn't, it's genetic.  :P For years I thought the migraines were a result of the cyst, but my neurologist insists that they're asymptomatic.  I've been through oodles of prescriptions for them, and nothing has helped. I'll be somewhat excited if everything goes as planned and I can start becoming gluten free. I'm excited to hopefully start feeling better!

Hi Colleen Are you supplementing B12/having injections? I have learned recently that sometimes when you start addressing a B12 deficiency, it can temporarily make your symptoms worse.  But it is important not to stop the treatment.  Regarding your problems with anxiety, again that is another symptom of a B12 deficiency.   I didn't know what anxiety was until it hit me like a train several months before gastrointestinal issues began, so I can certainly relate.   Two books which helped me hugely were At Last A Life by Paul David (there is a website you can look up) and The Depression Cure: The Six-Step Programme to Beat Depression Without Drugs by Dr Steve Llardi.  Although his book is aimed at people who have depression, following the principals he sets out was so helpful in lessening my anxiety.  Llardi suggests we need to focus on getting enough: - physical exercise - omega-3 fatty acids - natural sunlight exposure - restorative sleep - social connectedness - meaningful, engaging activity   ... and we should feel a lot better. That is not to stay you must stop taking medication for depression or anxiety if you have been prescribed it, but adopting the changes Dr Llardi sets out in the book should really help. Can I just ask two more questions:  1) you say that you are B12 deficient, did they test your iron levels too?  If not, you really ought to be checked for deficiency and, 2) did they check your thyroid function, as an overactive thyroid can be cause rapid heartbeat and a lot of coeliacs have thyroid issues? Hello still dancing around my celiac disease and not getting medically backed up considering Ive been glutenfree since 1994.All my ailments are the core issue of my ghost disease aka celiac disease. Im angery because the "celiac specialist " basically lightly dismissed me.Im extremely angery and fighting for a new primary care physician which is hard to do in Northern Cali.So currently without and looking.Im angery that its lightly taken when its extremely serious to the one who has it.My only evidence is a brochure back in the days when I got news letters when I lived at my parents. It was published in 1998.I was diagnosed before any foods eliminated from my diet. Angery doctors don't take seriously when Im clearly speaking.I did write to the medicine of congress and have case number.

I totally get this. It's absolutely a grieving process, and it's okay to feel gutted about the loss of those simple joys, especially at 18. Your feelings are completely valid—it's not about being ungrateful for your amazing boyfriend, it's about mourning the life you thought you'd have. That "tortured by the smell" feeling is so real. It does get easier, I promise, but it's okay to sit in the sadness and just vent about how much it stings right now. Thanks for sharing that. Celiac.com has published a book on our site by Jean Duane PhD called Gluten-Centric Culture, which covers many of the social aspects of having celiac disease: This chapter in particular covers issues around eating with family and others - Gluten-Centric Culture: Chapter 5 - Grabbing A Bite Together:
