Ok I have a rash on my back, I do believe it to be the rash Celiacs get, name escapes me at the moment. I am going to the Dr. Thursday and well my Dr. is out of town , when he comes back he is booked up for three weeks, my question is, with this rash on my back (Biggest complaint) what do they normally do about that? Just curious? And hoping I don't get put on a steroid ... The rash is on the small of my back and has moved up. now it is on the backs of my arms. Not alot on the backs of my arms but it is there, also a tiny speck on my face.

I don't like this Dr. I am going to, I went to her b4 when I was having stomach pain, she pushed around and said does this hurt or this? And really it didn't hurt any more when she pushed. She told me there was nothing wrong with me. But did blood work , sent me home with some pill I didn't have filled (why should I if theres nothing wrong with me?) (all in my head)  Anyhoo the next day the Drs. office calls and said I have appendicitis , and if I was to have ANY more or worse pain to go to the ER. Other than that go to Dr. so and so... well in a couple days I had my hot appendix out. But yea I don't like her.

Dermatitis Herpetiformis....or DH for short.

How long have you had this rash?

Is it itchy? A little or a lot?

emaegf Newbie

Dermatitis Herpetiformis also known as DH. You need a skin biopsy which is done by a Dermatologist. If it's just on your back though I don't think it's DH. That shows on your arms and legs first not your back. DH lesions are more like little (or big) blisters.

Mine are various sizes and while in control if I get gluten they stay on my legs. More gluten they start spreading.

You can have a rash when you consume gluten but it's not necessarily DH that's why you need the biopsy. Get your primary doctor to refer you to the dermatologist. Once htat's done since you don't like this doctor if you can get one you like, who listens to you, and you can work with.

Some celiacs, like me, get a rash and oozey little blisters from gluten exposure that is not classic DH.

My GI doc calls them "gluten rashes".

Some people get rashes from OTHER foods or from plants, etc.

How long have you had it?

and..(I see Ski has asked this too...great minds lol

Well the last time I went to the Dr. I had it, I just forgot to tell him about it. Thats the appt that got me diagnosed , but I did forget to tell him about it. It is on my arms also.. It has been there a few months. Seems it doesn't show up on a camera that I can take anyway. It is not from Plants. I have lived with allergies all my life!! Believe me!! This feels kinda dry, it itches worse sometimes than others, I do NOT itch it!! I know better!! but anyway. I go to the Dr. tomorrow, hopefully they tell me what it is. going on my arms and stuff so I cannot w8 to see what it is. Thanks for all your posts.

Altho I was wondering if it was DH, what they do about it.

GottaSki Mentor

What does the rash look like?  Take a look in the DH photo bank.

A biopsy can be taken for DH....but not all dermatologists do this correctly...and I doubt any primary.

I had a red welty type itchy rash for about six weeks prior to dx and it did wax and wain until completely gone --- can't remember how long but it was at least a month or two.

DH is the skin form of celiac disease, hon and the treatment is the same: G F diet

Some people use Dapsone for it. Check out the DH section on the forum for helpful tips.

You know .... I did look at alot of pics and have been trying to find something that resembles my rash. I think now , (And I think you were the  one I seen post this GottaSki), Not every symptom is about Celiac. After doing search and search and searches I think it is from Lichen Planus. with Lichen Planus you can have white tongue, a rash, and have problems with your nails .... And Lichen Planus is also a Auto Immune disease , I think everything is kinda because of the Celiac, not absorbing Vitamins and Minerals and such... I talk to this Dr. today. I will come back and let everyone know...... Maby a dermatologist , maby a nutritionist vitamins and minerals will all help. Hopefully all this will be ok in a few more months .. Heck it hasn't even been 2 months since I have been DX'd so I have to be patient. It is just hard when this rash is spreading. And I am having the other issues.  TY all for your help. And TY GottaSki for your words of wisdom!! I am trying to use them!! :)

I am feeling better when I am not accidentally Glutened , I learn more and more all the time!! This is a great site!! I appreciate everyones input on any thread I make. I am getting used to cooking Gluten free. Life will get easier cooking as I learn more!

If you are gluten free then a dh biopsy will come up negative even if that's what you have. Period.

Ok :)

Went to Doc :) It was not the Doc I thought it was!! I like this "Guy" Basically everything is from Auto immune from Celiac, my immune system is just low. For my hair, he told me a shampoo to use.. I forgot at the moment what it is called, over the counter. My mouth, a mouth wash prescription , my toe nails I have to let them grow out a bit more then take a biopsy and take it to them. They will have it sent out. It will take 4-6 weeks to get the results from that, then from there he will prescribe some meds for that, you know the stuff ya gotta take for 3 weeks. And the rash I have a lotion to but on 2 times a day. Basically  he said all will get better in time! I asked for a copy of my Celiac test, he was looking on the computer at my test because I said 1st they called and said,  I didn't have celiac, then they called and said I did have it. So he looked and said wow, not only do you have Celiac, but you have the gene.  But then when the girl was copying my test she did it wrong ! I didn't get everything. When I realized that ,she had a line in front of her. So I said for get it! I might call and ask for it again. So thats it in a nut shell.... I have been worried about this stuff ... Now no worries. He told me try not to get stressed out, alot of stuff happens when 1st immune system is not up to par, and 2 when your stressed. So thats it!! Thank you everyone! I was kinda stressed about it all , and there was no need to be.

Part of test I have says this...

IGA  IMMUNOGLOBULIN (INCLUDED IN IMGB) RESULT 148    FLAG REFERENCE RANGE : 68-378

IGM IMMUNOGLOBULIN       "       "           "        RESULT 87     FLAG REFERENCE RANGE : 60- 263

IGG IMMUNOGLOBULIN        "       "           "       RESULT 867   FLAG REFERENCE RANGE : 694-1618

TRANSGLUTAMINASE IGA REFERANCE RANGE <4.0 (Negative) RESULT <1.2

Test taken at Mayo Clinic Laboratories ....

in my mind all looks well except that last one ??? not sure what it all means

What are your daily meals? Guilty pleasure snacks? Protein bars? I feel when looking for gluten free foods they are filled with sugar cholesterol. Looking for healthy gluten-free protein bars. Something to fill since sometimes I feel like not to eat anything. Especially if on vacation and unsure of cross contamination I figure go with a salad and protein bar to fill and play it safe.

Unfortunately, there is presently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. NCGS is thought to be much more common than celiac disease. We know that celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder but the mechanism of NCGS is less clear. Both call for an elimination of gluten from the diet.

Thanks for your reply Trents…most appreciated.  I am unfamiliar with celiac labs terminology so I wanted to know if the presence of HLA variants (DA:101, DA:105, DQB1:0301 and DQB1:0501) that the labs detected had any merit in predisposing one to be more sensitive to gluten/carbs than the general population?  Also,  I found what you said about NCGS very interesting and I appreciate you mentioning that.  I’ve worked hard to research and advocate for myself with my Hematologist and now with a new GI, since my bowel surgery and to maintain my Vitamin B12 health concurrent with keeping my levels of Iron in the optimal range. I’ve been tested for SIBO (do not have it), biopsy showed negative for HPylori, and have had Fecal studies done (nothing showed up) and I understand how a loss of a large amount of bowel could be highly impacting re: SIBO, malabsorption and motility issues. So I’ve managed pretty well diet and elimination-wise until just recently. That said, this new problem with extreme bloating, distention and upper girth, NAFLD just occured over the last 4 months so it is new for me and I thought celiac might be a possible issue. I’ll probably just continue on in this less gluten/carbs seem to be better for me and see how reintroducing certain foods go.  Thanks again.

Thanks bumped it up and now take all 3 vitamins 2 capsules each with the super b complex at breakfast. I will give it some time to see if I notice a difference. I am going to track my eating daily diary on a myfitness pal app to see if the "claimed" gluten free foods bother me or not.

Please can anyone help. I was diagnosed on 23rd December and I am trying my best to get my head around all the things to look out for. I have read that yeast extract is not to be eaten by coeliacs. Why? And is this all yeast extract. Or is this information wrong. Thanks.
