How To Reduce My Chances Of Related Health Problems And Disorders

Hi all,

New to the forum. Recently got biopsy results back that show "3B" damage and am waiting for a blood test to confirm the diagnosis. In the meantime, I've gone gluten-free.

One of the concerns I have is that there appears (from the little research I've had time to do) to be a strong correlation between celiac disease and other conditions (lymphoma, diabetes, etc.).

Assuming I'm eating gluten-free and my gut heals, would I not be back to having the same risk factors as any other healthy person?

If my assumption is incorrect, what things can I do to reduce my risk of these other conditions? I am slender, eat a well-balanced diet (always have, just now without gluten) and exercise regularly - but the thought of developing diabetes, for example, terrifies me!

Thanks!

The only time, from what i understand, that such conditions surface do to the connection to celiac is if someone is not following the diet. Outside of that, you have the same risk as everyone else.

Try not to worry too much about it. Many of us were undiagnosed for decades and never developed other problems. After 5 years your chance of developing a celiac related cancer go down to the same as the non celiac population from what I understand. However once someone has any autoimmune disease the chances of having another eventually is there. Don't lose sleep over it but if you should develop symptoms of something like thyroid disease, as one example, have your doctor check things out.

Thanks guys! Still a little scary but I'll focus my energy on continuing to be active, sticking to a gluten-free diet and living an otherwise healthy lifestyle. Hopefully I can stave off any further conditions. Good to know that most are related to un-diagnosed or un-treated Celiac.

Your response on this matter is what I expect. You’ve had a similar episode years ago, but this one is lasting longer!

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?
