Immune System And Energy Levels In The First Few Weeks gluten-free

Hi guys,

I'm three weeks gluten free now (I was two weeks gluten free in September then had to eat it again for another set of bloods). The first time around gluten-free I felt better (and starving hungry!) almost straight away. I stuffed myself with gluten for a few weeks before the test and felt heavy, bloated, GI symptoms etc. This time around being gluten-free, the bloating/gas/GI symptoms have cleared up again but I caught a really bad cold two weeks ago and feel as though I'm about to go down with another one (This is unusual for me). My concentration is really bad too. I haven't experienced the rise in energy levels or increase in appetite.

Is this likely to be linked to coeliac recovery, gluten withdrawal or anything like that? If so, any idea how to combat this or how long it might last. For the record, I also have anaemia and low iron stores (ferritin?) and my ttg IgA was 128u/ml.

Thanks! x

You probably are going through a bit of withdrawal and then have the cold on top of it... unlucky you!  :( Withdrawal usually hits within a few days and can last up to a few weeks. If it is affecting you, hopefully it will be over soon.

When colds swing back for a repeat, it usually (for me) means a secondary infection like in the sinuses, ear, or chest, and I often end up on antibiotics. Sometimes it's viral and you just have to wait it out.

It's also helpful to remind yourself that you've been sick a long time and it will take some time for your body to stop attacking itself and start healing. Your tTG IgA is high; if you are anything like me, it will take months to a year for your autoantibody levels to fall back down to normal... and then you really start healing.  :)

Best wishes. Hope you feel well soon.

Thanks for the reply nvsmom. Good to hear some sound advice rather than beating myself up for not being on form. I got the actual numbers back for my iron - both blood iron and transferrin saturation languishing at 3g/l and 3%. I'm off to eat chocolate and spinach... :D I will bear in mind about the length of time for healing with high antibodies too.

Spinach and chocolate... Not at the same time, right? ;)

LOL Really? Don't mess with me, I'm trying to eat better after halloween junk food and that sounds like a pretty good compromise.  LOL

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
