No Gluten But Still Sick

Hi everyone!

I was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago and have been completely gluten free since. I have not had any gluten in my diet, but I have been sick for the last two days. Yesterday was not horrible, but today I am tired again, have diarrhea, and my gut is making tons of noises. I have been getting better and better the last two weeks with almost none of these symptoms. I can't figure out where the gluten could have come from (and I am 99% sure I haven't consumed any). Is there any other reason I may be getting the common symptoms of being glutened although I wasn't?

Thank you for you help!

Well, obviously, that's a possibility. lol I just wanted to know if anyone else had symptoms soon after they were diagnosed, although they hadn't consumed anything they weren't supposed to. I've been light headed and tired too though, which is common for me when glutened. Hopefully I feel better tomorrow.

I also live in Germany though, and there has not been a serious stomach bug outbreak here.

You said 99% sure?  Have you prepared you Kitchen to be Gluten Free?  Did you eat out?  Take a look at the Newbie 101 Thread if you haven't already.  Hope you feel better.

a couple of weeks is so hard to say you have been 100% gluten free. It is so early! I found things I was eating that had hidden Gluten in them. Cannot remember right off hand now what it was but it happens. Try to eat as natural as possible! Meat and veggies, make sure you wash your veggies before you eat them. If you eat canned veggies make sure you check the ingredients. Make sure anything like rice or Quinoa is Gluten free. So unless you have another intolerance you are probably getting a bit of Gluten in you. Also if your taking any meds they could have Gluten in them. The newbie thread is wonderful!!

Yeah. I have quite a few other Celiac's in my family. I had my kitchen and WHOLE house gluten-free before I was even diagnosed. I actually diagnosed myself, took it to the doctor, and he confirmed it with blood tests and a biopsy. I have started to feel better late this afternoon, so not sure what it could have been. I am still a little confused on certain products, but I have steered clear of things like that. I haven't eaten out either. Just got a call from the hubby though, and he says he isn't feeling well either. Maybe it is a stomach bug.

I guess I won't know until my body is completely healed. Then, as I have heard, it is much easier to sense when and how you are glutened.

Thanks for the help! I will definitely go check out the newbie forum!

Withdrawal could be the culprit too. It usually hits sometime in the first week gluten-free and lasts for a a few days or a couple of weeks. I found it quite exhausting when I experienced it. Either way, virus, or withdrawal, I hope you feel better soon.

I think I found a huge culprit for severe reactions to create worsening of my c symptoms. Do people with celiac have sensitivity and /or have opposite reaction to certain medications Where can I find a list ?  I'm new here I'm.wondering why I am getting worse when I take certain medicine...the burning feet.  Rebound muscle pain so intense  How many people get opposite effects or have a horrible attack after these meds

Does anyone know if that includes scrambled eggs and healthy smart butter (,gluten free) I add a very tiny amount of margarine less than a teaspoon.  I did no't have any bread    It just seems like no matter what I eat my stomach and nerves over fire and here comes a host of horrible symptoms. My lower abdomen feels horrible, my right leg thigh muscle.. very odd. Jaw pain. Burning feet , joint pain , you name it  The anxiety just creeps up into brain fog. I don't think I could explain this to anyone who is unfamiliar.  Also,  I most likely will not remember posting this until I check it.  This is highly unusual for me because I have an excellent memory.  One weekend before I knew anything about celiac I lost an entire weekend from severe brain fog, confusion, pain, etc.  I honestly thought I was losing my mind. When I think back I recall eating a lot of PBJ sandwiches and turkey sandwiches.  Once again did not know about gluten.  I was just too sick to cook. Do people fast during attacks ?? It seems horrible to keep going through this. I hope I'm not causing my own problems... I wonder if I should fast because I'm not eating gluten .  Chicken ,  scrambled eggs no milk , canned carrots,  gluten free low sugar low fat Greek yogurt which I already posted about 😞 Any suggestions I am open... I am bedridden when this happens to me.  Thank you Celiac community. 🙏🏻❤️

Yeah, that sounds super familiar. When inflammation levels are high — especially at the start of changing your diet — the body often develops a fructose and lactose intolerance. Unfortunately, the only thing that really helps is cutting out anything that isn’t lactose-free or that contains sugar. So basically, stick to meat, veggies, fish…

I have trouble with nausea. It often starts when I’m anxious about something (home repairs, sick dog) but continues long after the home is repaired or the dog is healthy again. When it happens I eat less and lose weight.  My gastroenterologist suggested ginger or peppermint tea. I don’t know if that will work or not because I haven't had the problem since she suggested it.

Hello  I'm not sure what to think . Seems no matter what I do I get sick. I had some yogurt with only 2 grams of sugar and is labeled gluten free ...the strawberry version seemed to really set me off My jaw is burning as well as my stomach and my feet.  Horrible pain..plus acid reflux and nausea... sensitivity to touch pain. ..yikes !! I don't know if it's from the lactose in the yogurt or if I'm getting an ulcer  This condition can make you question yourself quite a bit.  Then if you are not sure the anxiety comes 😞 Does any of these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? The neuropathy is quite intense.  What do you eat or drink after this happens  Open to suggestions  Thank you
