Hi Everyone,

 

I am new but new on the forum. I have been reading the forum for about  5 months now and have found tons of helpful  information here. I have seen this forum members provide lots of support to others. I have found the stories and the information shared here very informative and very encouraging. Cheers to all of you for such good work :)

 

Little about me:

 

   I was diagnosed with celiac late 2013. I had suspected I might have it after my mom was diagnosed with Celiac in 2009 but I guess I was in denial and in university  :D  so I decided to push my diagnosis back for a while. My symptoms for Celiac were constipation, fatigue and anemia . Not having severe symptoms also contributed to not take the Celiac seriously but I guess I should count my blessings and be thankful that the symptoms are not severe.

  

 My mood started getting worse (very angry and irritable)  last year and I guess so did the damage to my gut. Endoscopy showed grade 3 out of 4 damage (it sound bad given that my GI  looked concerned ^_^ ). I guess I can't cry about it now given this is a consequence of my own choice -_- . 

 

I have been gluten free for about 3 months (well 4 months of I count the big blunders I made in the first month of the diet)  and hoping that my health will go no where but up  :D .

 

I just completed the follow up blood work yesterday and am hoping that it shows some good results of my hard work for the last 3 month. I need some positive vibes from you guys!!!

I'm glad you finally got tested. My Mom had it too and like you, I was in denial for a long time. But I'm so glad I finally went gluten-free. Glad you did too. I hope your tests show great improvement!

The good news is that once the transition is complete it gets much easier.

 

It is great that your symptoms were not severe...you are still young and will heal now that you are living gluten-free.

I am really optimistic about this positive (and at times hard) lifestyle change. I guess its all worth it in the end. 

I am just hoping to see some validation in the results for the blood work. I will share how it went.

Yes, let us know how your blood work goes. I go back in April for my follow-up and am hoping for some good stuff! Keep up the good work!

I was diagnosed on Oct 1, 2013 so haven't been at this for long.  I go back for the follow-up blood work towards the end of March.  You're very fortunate to have caught this thing before getting severe symptoms.  I didn't have any symptoms and yet the biopsy showed moderate to severe villi damage - so the myth about "no symptoms, no problem" (a.k.a. blatant denial) is a load of crap.  ^_^

Thank you everyone! I got my blood work results back today.

Now way back in 2009 I was tested in diff country while taveling and my ttg was 297and I have been on full gluten diet until last year november Here in canada I they never give a number. It just said > 200.

But happy to say its 160 Yay!! It might not be as low as others might have seen but I am happy for this progress. My other antibody is now NORMAL.

My hemoglobin had jumped from the 70s to 127. My ferritin has gone up to 73!

Just thought I should share the numbers. I am off to celebrate with some glutenfree honey and peanut butter sandwiches :)

      Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

      highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind

      Thank you for your post, @nanny marley It is interesting what you say about 'It's OK not to sleep'. Worrying about sleeping only makes it much harder to sleep.  One of my relatives is an insomniac and I am sure that is part of the problem.  Whereas I once had a neighbour who, if she couldn't sleep, would simply get up again, make a cup of tea, read, do a sudoku or some other small task, and then go back to bed when she felt sleepy again.  I can't think it did her any harm - she lived  well into her nineties. Last week I decided to try a Floradix Magnesium supplement which seems to be helping me to sleep better.  It is a liquid magnesium supplement, so easy to take.  It is gluten free (unlike the Floradix iron supplement).  Might be worth a try.

      Thank’s for addressing the issue of mushrooms.  I was under the impression that only wild mushrooms were gluten-free.  Have been avoiding cultivated mushrooms for years. Also, the issue of smoked food was informative.  In France last year, where there is hardly any prepared take-out food that is gluten-free, I tried smoked chicken.  Major mistake!
